Trauma is totally what happened to you. Saying it's your reaction to it is dangerous and blames you, the victim. It's a crazy breach btwn. cause and effect. Stop mystifying the fact that you were victimized.

      That's not what he's saying.

@@auntiebobbolink 00:39 'Trauma isn't what happens to you,, trauma is what happens inside you as the result of what happens to you...' So if you're hit with a bat, it's how you react to it that is the problem. Uh NO, the problem is you were hit with a bat. This is really convoluted nonsense. It is possible that people are effected differently by violence/brutality/abandonment but more often than not, the damage is very similar across the board like childhood rape survivors for example. We have more in common than not.

@@earthsign7568 I understand why you are upset but this isn't what he means at all. There is zero chance Gabor Mate is victim blaming I can assure you. He's trying to be more inclusive about what trauma is, and he's trying to say that if you felt trauma then you had trauma, whatever it was that happened. No one gets to say being hit by a bat is less bad / more bad than being raped, for instance -- there is no objective definition of trauma, it is defined by the person experiencing it. I have a friend who was traumatized by saving a man's life on the street through CPR & and a portable defibrillator, and I thought it was a miracle and to be celebrated and that she could be proud for the rest of her life. But for her, it was terribly traumatic, it cannot be mentioned and she never walked down that street again. It was a miracle, but for her, it was trauma. He is affirming that yes, that is trauma, because it's not what happened (she saved a man's life) it's what happened inside her (which had more to do with, e.g., 7 minutes of the man's wife screaming hysterically and a crowd gathering, just for starters). He is not blaming anyone, he is validating their feelings and their experience. I promise you, he is not denying your traumas and neither am I. If you are traumatized, then you are. Full stop.

@@earthsign7568 I tried to respond to you but the system messed it up. I hear you about physical trauma... the bat is real. But what he's saying isn't about a bat. Please, hear me... this isn't about blaming the victim. Blaming the victim is always wrong, and very harmful. This is about what happens to us internally. Its about how what happened makes us feel about ourselves! Can you hear the difference? There is no blaming in that. There is deeper compassion. Deeper. Compassion.
