Filmed in Haggerston Park, Hackney. Two male Mallard ducks fighting over a female (who wasn't very interested anyway!) After the less dominant male left, just as my camera battery died, the male turned on me!!

It is for sure hate not love. Consensual homosexuality exists, for sure, among animals. More often it is however a territory and dominance thing. Usually a resident male will chase an intruder off. In enclosed poultry coops, this is not always possible for the weaker male to flee, so the dominant male uses two other methods, attacking or pseudoraping or fully raping him, sometimes a combination. In this case the dominant male chose to mount and ride the weaker in the water, telling him “I put you in the female position”.
I grew up on a farm. We never had mallards but muscovies, worse rapists (male on female and male on male) than mallards as far as I can make out from studies on the internet. This is not limited to water fowl though, it has been observed in hundreds of species from the lowly bedbugs to primates. I’d daresay it happens in all species that reproduce with sex, it has not been observed and described in all yet as there are too many.
I never learned why the top male “ducks” (verb) the head of whom he rides, under the water. This is where the word comes from, as practiced as simple playfulness (often by lovers) through to bullying. The water fowl males do this with the females too. I have never observed a drowning, but I read about on the internet. It depends on the duration. There is a type of frog that goes sitting on a loser entirely submerging him. Adult frogs still have an ability to go without oxygen for a long time, so usually after a maximum of 10 minutes the dominant gets bored.
In our cruel world it is of course not only the resident that dominates and rape. Often the intruder takes over and the former residents receive the treatment. This is good. On our farm one huge muscovy drake for several years ruled. He mated with his daughters and granddaughters he had with his daughters and maybe more generations down. He had a certain pretty plumage he carried over to his progeny that was sold. Then a chick with a deformed foot appeared. He was exchanged with a drake from a distant farm (i.e not where his sons were) and apparently fathered one more clutch there. Lucky old guy, not having to end his life in humiliation!
Does it impresses the girls? For sure. There was a TV programme where 2 Malagassy tortoises fought and one was overturned. It was said that the female was aroused by the fight, the winner immediately proceeded mating with her. Tortoises can rectify themselves in case you wonder, that was also shown on the TV programme for that case. Yet sometimes they are too exhausted or injured or it may be very hot. It does take some effort to kick out the legs, it is not very easy.
For animal females it does not matter if a loser is killed. They do not have morals, just instinct.
Um... Those boy ducks aren't fighting. lol I've seen lots of duck sex and I know my duckies well enough to know when they're getting a little nookie on the side. It sure was stressing the female though.

I think its more hate than like in this case. The dominant male had intended to mate with the female, but the other male got to close. I've witnessed this a few times on rare occasions the dominant males with mount other males a hold their heads underwater until they drown. I'm not sure if it impresses the ladies or not?
