- My generation is trying to make smoking cigarettes "cool" again for some reason. I thought we learned the truth about smoking and that American's addiction to cigarettes would eventually die out, but maybe not?

Of all the things that could have made a comeback during this generation, I did not expect it to be cigarette smoking.
Cigarette smoking has never left..
To be fair Brett did make a great point. It does look pretty fly as H lol.
not in Europe or Asia, obviously they continued to smoke. But in America gen x stopped for the most part, and barely any millennials ever picked up the habit. Gen z is apparently picking up the habit though.
due to how popular vaping and weed smoking is, I was expecting it
Honestly, I thought it would be cigars not cigarettes that would be popular
I went to high school with a girl who had cancer when she was younger, when her 18th birthday was coming up she was wondering how to celebrate it and someone suggested a cigarette. Her response was something along the lines "I already had cancer, I'm not going to PAY for more!!!"

I was a manager at a gas station chain for 8 years, in the midwest, and I can honestly tell you smoking never stopped here. Once I started working there, I was shocked at just how many people of all ages, of all types, smoke 1-3 packs a day. It's insane. I'm convinced most smokers lie about it.
Would you say male or female were majority of buyers?
@@gbanger6317 Among older customers, slightly more men bought them, but among younger customers, it seemed like slightly more women. It wasn't an extreme difference or anything, but a shocking number of the younger women buying cigarettes were wearing their scrubs for their healthcare jobs or schooling. Anytime anyone came in wearing scrubs, 99.9% of the time, they were there for cigarettes.
When i worked at a gas station and people came in and bought multiple packs, i would say i used to smoke 2 packs a day i miss it, and majority would say there grabbing a pack for there laddy or there mom/dad too. Facts
Here in Italy, but Europe in general, it never stopped.
The absolute vast majority of people my age started smoking at something like 11-13. They always tried hard to act "cool" while having a cigarette in their hand it's hilarious. They tried to lure me so many times without any result.
Now i'm 25, i see them stuck in a cycle, they don't have money for basic things but must buy at least one or two packs of cigarettes a day.
Every excuse they make about smoking (which are the same you mentioned) are honestly just cope..
I’m from Italy too and where I live is the same
Belgium here, same thing
I am from germany and a lot of people smoke here too, it´s not so extreme like in italy but a lot of young people start smoking at the age of 15/16 when they start partying and do "party-rauchen" and then they get addicted and vapes are sadly very common.
Yall should come to Sweden

I live in Spain and this has been the norm since… forever. I don’t smoke but most of my friends do it. I guess in Europe it never stopped being “trendy” and it surprised me when I went to study to Canada and nearly anyone I knew smoked cigarettes.
yea my dads from poland and one thing they’ll do there is smoke 😭

Literally
Northern European countries have definitely tried to make smoking less trendy and make it seen as 'dirty', but sadly in the rest of Europe, it is so normalised that many individuals don't even consider whether their smoke is going to bother people around them.
the vaping trend of the late 2010’s has progressed into the cigarette smoking trend on the early 2020’s
Honestly as someone who recently started, i started knowing full well what it can do, i grew up in the DARE culture i knew full well what i was doing and honestly it’s freeing it was a relief no one pressured me no one forced me, no celebrity made me think it was cool, i did it because it was one thing i was actually able to control during a shit time, as unhealthy as that can sound it was a truthfully freeing decision.
edit
i’m also not a social smoker i do it alone literally every time just looking at the sunrise or sunset enjoying one
Trust me guys, don’t start smoking just to fit in. I was in a similar situation and quitted my friend group because of it. I eventually found a new one, but the time I was alone actually made me to a better person. I finally had time to think about myself and the person I want to become. Another important point is, that when I thought about my future, I realized what my future kids would think about me doing smoking etc. The probability of them then doing the same things would be much higher. Anyways, I wish you the best luck!
As a Gen Z-er, I can confirm that if you vape you get made fun of but if you smoke it’s grunge 💀 makes about as much sense as anything these days

When I was in the Navy I made some of my best connections on the SmokeDeck. It's a sad fact and the military, especially the Navy, is trying to get away from the smoking and drinking stereotypes. "Drink/cuss like a sailor" is a saying for a reason. But the fact remains that it's one of the few places on the ship where you can socialize. You see the same people and build friendships and connections outside of your department. Even within your department, the smoke deck is where sailors relax. I learned so much just by sitting and talking with sailors in different areas of my field. I just wish there was a different outlet as I finally quit smoking after 10 years and I hate that Junior Sailors are picking up the tradition.
The lack of third places should be talked about more often. Im glad you mentioned it because it was something I feel the need for but its not talked about and doesnt really seem normalized
In my country of Denmark, I see the same trend and it's mostly on the rise for young women. I see 3 main reasons why:
1. Trauma - smoking being a medication for bad emotions and an escape from pain
2. Feminism - the trendy masculine mindset for women, telling them how to be cool by being strong, independant and rebellious
3. Social media and the wrong role models
Also danish - I love to add the fact that smoking in Denmark is so common, my university exams always had a statement at the beginning: "No smoke breaks during the exam"
Dang, really? That's super disturbing. Especially since that's a huge turnoff for a lot of people.

I mean if logically anything bad we have put into our bodies from some medicines to drinking cokes and eating a burger all of which are technically speaking are bad for you. But in my opinion I don’t think God would send you to hell for it, but. I could be wrong. As a example Brett brought up the study of how any alcohol consumed is bad for you. Yet Jesus did drink wine multiple times throughout the Bible and we know he was perfect. Granted the wine they drank back then could’ve been for a variety of reasons. And I do know our body is a temple to serve the Lord. My thing is I don’t think God would send us to hell over it but again I’m open to be proven wrong if you do have some verses that come to mind to counter my opinion. And don’t think I am taking a jab at you or trying to start a arguement I’m simply opening the door to a discussion I’m more than happy to be wrong in.
Love how smooth the segways are in your videos!
I agree. Cigarette smokers are a breed of their own and being one makes you part of a clique so to say. I used to live for the moments outside with other smokers. It makes you feel like you’re in your own little world with that person(s). I ended up quitting once I stopped hanging out with people who smoke
When I was a kid, it was hard to find an adult that didn't smoke. It was everywhere, there were even smoking rooms in hospitals. I never took it up, but I had friends that did, and the ones that are still living look ten years older than me. I don't know anyone who doesn't wish they never started smoking.
I think smoking room in hospital is necessary. Despite it not being healthy, at least there is a designated place for it. There are o2 panels everywhere so if someone sneaks in cigarettes and being cheeky by smoking inside, it might cause fire. Plus what if the smoke was inhaled by asthmatic ppl?
At least that smoking area will make those unhealthy smoke to remain in 1 area ykyk.
My high school had a smoking lounge for the students. All you needed was a letter of permission signed by your parents.
I think almost every adult I knew as a kid smoked, but at some point they were also all trying to quit. I started smoking at the age of 15 because at that age it was considered “cool” or “edgy” but after a while it turned into a so called stress relief. By the age of 24 I was smoking two and a half packs of Newport cigarettes which are known to be one of the most harmful cigarettes out there. Then I finally realized that I was wasting so much money and my health on a horrible habit and quit with the help of nicotine gum. 3 years later and I feel amazing and grateful for quitting. With that being said I will never talk down on anyone who smokes or try forcing them to quit because I know how it feels.
Same. I found myself at 23 smoking like 20 cigs a day, so I had to do something for my health. I am right now 8 days free from nicotine and I hope I can stay free forever. Honestly if I could smoke only 4-5 cigs a day I wouldn't even quit at this age, but I just can't "smoke a little" so my options are either smoke (a lot) or just quit and never smoke again.
I started smoking late 20s at work, on and off, always come back to it when I’m depressed in the workplace and need 2 minutes of me time. There’s a girl who works where I do and she has just took up smoking here too. Something about seeing her take up smoking the same place I did makes me want to quit for good

I'm an ex smoker of 15 years on and off and I found weed far more addictive and harder to stop.
I feel like a large part that was left out of the video is mental health and how when one gets mentally ill it can lead one to want to do anything to feel better and I hear from people who struggle with mantel illness that right during the time of smoking it can provide some relief from emotional pain. I feel like in any conversation about addictions and weather smoking is coming back or not we need to also consider mental health and addiction and what part hat plays in the whole thing.
I'm rewatching this video, 6 months later… My husband just turned 40 and is going through recovery from a laryngectomy. (had his voice box removed) He had a stage 4 throat cancer return (for the 2nd time) squamous cell carcinoma. At that age I went to the parties to cook for everyone. I wasn't into drinking but all my friends were. After people got used to me, some would bring food to me with their beer it worked out really well.
Ok I'm glad you said it yourself at the end there. It's just a crutch for people, they are so many other thing the could be doing with their time and money to be cooler. Cigarettes are ridiculous, they just demonstrates poor self control and foresight, same for alcohol and so many other poisons nowadays.
Its honestly so sad watching so many young people I know at the college I go to pick up smoking/vaping. The amount of people I know that do it despite growing up in a world condemning it is completely outrageous.
I’m on the tail end of Gen Z (only 14), and I completely agree. I feel like our generation was (and still kind of is) in the height of vaping and smoking being trendy, just because of how geared towards children they have made it. Now I do think it is more Senior to College age kids, but still all these companies are profiting off of selling fun flavors of vapes, and easy ways to consume nicotine by making it look like gum. Nobody is making it difficult to smoke or vape, so why would these kids not? Like previously mentioned, the older side of Gen Z I feel is more geared towards drugs and smoking, just because they were raised in the height of the vapes and edibles and everything. My end of the generation has been raised in the height of being against those things. Like istg every month we have an anti-smoke, drugs, and vape assembly, just because they REALLY don’t want us to turn out like our fellow Gen Z-ers have. Anyways, thanks for reading my rant ✌️
You missed out on the 90s. I'm so sorry
They need less stress as they use it as a anti-stressor.
They should probably give help to teenagers and people like that instead of berating and not helping.
They are not really geared towards children but teenagers over 18.
I feel the opposite tbh. Im 17 and idk many people my age that vape but as soon as I enter the school bathroom theres always a freshman or sophomre in their vaping and showing it off thinking that its cool. Never once seen anyone older than a sophomore vape at my school atleast and its prolly bcz most people my age didnt have access to vapes pre-covid so they never started it at that age. But with the transition from middle to high school and those kids thinking they are "growing up" they start vaping bcz its a lot more accessible to them then it was to us.
It must be tough to say that Nature's nicotine is SO bad for Gen Z, while California is pushing Chynah made vape juice with nicotine + chemicals for flavours + metals as GOOD for us. Add that many of Gen Z's parents are addicted to and saying weed RESIN is healthy to inhale! It's all a load of manure. The Greatest Generation won a world war on cigarettes, coffee, tinned and powdered food, and Scotch.

I've been a smoker most of my life.
I agree with many points in this video. It's a nasty unhealthy thing to do.....but I love it.
While it can be debated on whether or not the aesthetic is pleasing, it is undeniably bad for your health.
However, people should be allowed to smoke if they want. My life has been EXTREMELY difficult, and I wouldn't mind if it doesn't last super long. I guess what I'm getting at is the health harm isn't an issue for me.
The pricing sucks. I know they cost so much to deter people from smoking, but we should be allowed to make our own health choices.
I love smoking. At times I even enjoy the smell of a lit cigarette. I love the taste, the feel, and just about everything else that comes with it (yes, even the aesthetic). The only part I don't love is the price.
I'm even ok with it "taking 7 minutes off your life" because I spent that 5 enjoying my smoke.
However, I understand the health effects, and have seen it kill more than a few loved ones. I knew what I was getting myself into and made an educated decision on what I was gonna do, I was gonna do the dumb thing because I enjoy it.
I also think smokers should be courteous where they smoke
The prices aren't high to deter you from smoking, the prices are high for the government to yoink more money from you. A politician doesn't do stuff because it benefits the people but because it benefits themselves, benefiting the people is just a happy little accudent

I was forced to smoke at 8 and was addicted at 13 and quit at 21. You’ll realize after about 3-4 months they’re revolting just being around the smoke. It’s so rewarding to your pocket, your mental health and physical health. I wish you and your boyfriend the best of luck.
I wish you and your boyfriend well on your journey to stop smoking. I'm 18 and I will never smoke (as long as I'm not tied up in a basement and someone threatens to cut off my hands if I don't smoke a cigarette).
@@helenaBeaucold turkey is definitely the way. I did the same thing. Smoked one last one with a friend and then broke all the rest. After a couple weeks without them and a little will power you just kind of forget about them and then the smell will start to gross you out
have you tried using vaping as a way to quit? With vaping you can slowly decrease the amount of nicotine in the vape juice. Cigarettes contain 12MG of nicotine per cigarette, you can get vape juice in 12MG, 6MG, 3MG and even 0MG. It's alot easier then trying to quit cold turkey and while yes you are still intaking nicotine atleast you aren't inhaling all the other harmful chemical that cigarette smoke contains, plus vape juice actually tastes good lol. I smoked for 15yrs, switched to vaping 5yrs ago been vaping 6MG. I tried a cigarette a year ago and almost puked it was disgusting.
replace smoking with an actual hobby you can do to keep occupied.... being occupied by something keeps your mind off of smoking, but also enables you to do things, make things, expand your life in new ways.....
I (GenZ) used to smoke when I was younger. I thought it might help me lose appetite, because back then I was insecure and thought i had to lose weigh. And then it became a method of coping with negative emotions. I'm so glad and happy that I'm not smoking anymore, I have healthier ways to deal with my emotions now. When I got my wisdom teeth out I just stopped smoking and I'm so happy for that. I'm wishing the best for all the people who smoke for the same reasons: You can do it! You can find better ways of dealing with your emotions! You can quit smoking!
Celebrities are also humans and can do whatever they want with their health. People should stop blindly following their "idols".
I quit smoking about 5 years ago. The cost of cigarettes in my area is outrageous, saved me thousands.
same boat here i'm 2 weeks away from the 5 year mark. 10k+ saved, taxes have gone up some too.
Quit three years ago this October.

Congrats on quitting! I wish my dad would be able to quit but I'm very worried he'll die if he tried again
A week and a half away from my 5 year mark. Felt so much better after the initial wave of hating quitting I’ll never go back.
You guys use the patches?
Going outside to smoke a cigarette for "fresh air" is insanity 😂 you can do that for free you don't need the cigarette 😂
Makes me think of people that are obviously out running but took a break to have a smoke 😂
Never smoked soo you wouldnt know
I'm not a smoker but I've heard of several cases of jobs allowing smokers to go take extra breaks to smoke, but those of us who don't only get designated work breaks if any breaks at all.
I used to work with a bunch of smokers... at break time they'd all go out to smoke and I'd tag along, just hanging out with my healthy lungs and talking lol. You don't have to be a smoker to be social either
@@mathildaelrod7655 Well, where I work smokers can take smoke breaks whenever they want. Although, everyone can do that. It is just that if you smoking it is perceived that you are doing something. Also, if you are not smoking the mood if something needs to be done is that you need to do it now, however if you are smoking it would be more like once you are done smoking then this needs done.
There are certain positions where I work that the only acceptable reason to be away from your desk is to go to the bathroom, to be on lunch, or to be smoking. People working that position do not get a break unless it is really slow, or if they go out for a cigarette.

The real horror of smoking groups is always having your lighter pocketed and never knowing who took it.
That's why you don't let go of your lighter. Hold the flame to the party in need of a light. It makes you look like a gentleman, gives the appearance of friendliness, service and humility, and always ensures that you keep your lighter. Also, I have a ton of cheap lighters. Occasionally, I'll give one to someone who has no lighter. Back when a pack of cigarettes reliably came with matchbooks, I'd pass those along to my lightless brethren, as well.
My bad dawg I'll have to get you another one
@@magnificenthonky that's brilliant, totally gonna do it now
real
35 years ago, when I used to smoke, I never gave anybody my lighter I would light up, and if somebody wanted a light, I would give them my cigarette, and they would light it off of my cigarette.
They usually tell you in school about the damage it does to your lungs, heart, & skin. What they don’t mention is the total re-wiring of your brain that comes with nicotine & the other thousand chemicals. Smoked almost a pack day for 13 years. Happy to say my last cig was almost a year ago. That being said, after all this time has passed, I still have difficult moments of my mind still adjusting to life without the dirty smokes. Quitting is an absolute marathon.
Don’t buy into to the whole vaping façade either. Just a method to get a young brain nice & primed with nicotine already. Then when you’re at party/bar & your vape dies you’ll try the real stuff (actual tobacco) & you’ll never look back.
I don’t know man I’ve been vaping for 6 years and i still prefer the vape over the cigs, i think it depends on what you started with for what you get hooked on.
Same here. Stopped smoking because i wanted to be free again. I felt chained. Cigarettes dictated my life, so i had to stop this.
Great job brother, off for a year! 👍
I quit smoking like 4 months ago because i couldnt be fucked with being emotionally dependend on wether i could smoke or not anymore best decision of my life everytime i have cravings i either take a 3km walk or go to the gym i gained 10kg of weight in 2 months of muscle
I successfully used vaping to quit so have quit a few of my friends it a healthier option as far as your lungs go but if you vape correctly you can use it to quit the problem is that as with anything it become “cool” and so instead of smoking stolen cigarettes like I used to in junior high kids were bumming vapes off family who had them to quit and started doing that it’s a common thing to happen just like kids getting into their family members liquor cabinets
I never thought MY youth would ever be thought of under the same romantic, nostalgic feel as I viewed my parent’s or grandparent’s youth. This is making me wonder how many things I also emulated or liked without the proper context
As someone who started smoking at 8 year years old and regularly at 10, it's horrible (There were parental issues). I didn't really care until I hit about 30. I've quit a few different times for various lengths, usually short. My longest stint of quitting was 2 years. That ended last year. I thought I would only smoke when I drank because I rarely do. That failed me after the 3rd time doing it. Now I am awaiting the next quit mark. I can't explain it, but I just know when it hits and I can quit much easier when it happens. Could be tomorrow, could be 3 years from now. I'm in my 40's. It takes a huge toll and don't let anyone tell you any different.
I grew up around smokers - almost my entire family smoked. I always thought it was the corniest thing ever when someone who doesn't really smoke becomes a social smoker. Basically screams, "please think I'm cool!!"
But kinda makes sense that the hyper-image aware Gen Z would fall for it, then. Plus, they are the most anxious generation, and most smokers say smoking calms them down.
It only calms you down until you're out of cigarettes and suddenly realize you're addicted because if you don't get some nicotine RIGHT FUCKING NOW you will have a panic attack. Oh and coughing black shit out of your lungs in your early twenties isn't exactly calming either. Quitting was hell and I still want one every time I smell someone else with a cigarette 😕
I used to smoke. People have it all backwards. People get anxiety because theyre craving a smoke. Once they smoke one they go back to normal
It only calms you down for about 2 hours then the anxiety spikes high. "I'm gonna die if I don't get a cigarette" - Brad from Sublime song called Jailhouse.
Im 25 never smooed never will my brother does though 😂
Honestly I saw this coming. Especially with the gen z and younger obsession and addiction with vapes. Since vapes are electric and no one knows what's in them, people would feel "safer" smoking a cigarette.
i know an old army vet that smokes so many people have tried to get him to vape because it’s “healthier” he says “no that stuff has glass in it it’s not healthier” i have no idea if that’s true or not but he’s a very honest to God man so i always take his word for it
Alot of medical people I know tell thier patients to smoke cigarettes if they are known to vape.
@idioticbagel2833 that man is no liar, that info is a few years old but yes at one point there was glass in one of the brands and it got taken off the shelves
Propylene Glycol, vegetable glycerin, nicotine, and the same artificial flavors they use to make candy. It's listed on the bottle. No glass, not nearly as many toxins as are in cigs. Switched from Marlboros to vaping years ago and I feel much better.
@@Psalm23_4 Thank you for this. Most people read or hear stories from the same outlets lying to you about everything else.
I got asked when I was leaving Walmart "do you have a lighter?" I patted myself down pretending to look for a lighter and said "oh yeah, sorry I don't smoke." they looked completely offended.
Some of these folks really do be like: "Vaccines? Hell no, I ain't letting that shit anywhere near my kids (meanwhile pops out 10th cigarettes since just the morning)"
Ugh this is concerning but I also get it. I started smoking when I was 15-16 years old because all the “cool kids” did it, but then before I knew it I was hooked and I smoked until I was 28. Then I switched to vaping (which that’s probably why cigarette sales went down, everyone started vaping instead) but I found out that’s even worse- because now I can vape inside outside wherever whenever and I hate it. I’m trying to quit now but it’s SO HARD! Please, if you haven’t started- DONT EVER. 🙏🏼❤️
Edit: I now have been trying the nicotine gum 4mg which has helped ALOT but it’s the hand to mouth movement “what do I do with my hands?!?” LOL any recommendations/tips are appreciated 🙏🏼
Right? I quit the vapes exactly for that reason. Instead of finishing a cigarette and waiting like 15 30 minutes for another one the vape I would smoke constantly! Finishing a 600 drags vape in about 3 to 4 hours. Now I'm back on cigs but instead of 1 to 2 packs a day it's been cut down to max 2 packs a week.
Something that might be worth trying is the nicotine pouches you put under your lip.
I was on at 20-27 Marlboro Reds a day every day for 5yr.
I quit back in January but switching over specially to "Nordic Spirit Spearmint" and haven't touched a cig since and now I'm not even tempted being about to walk past smokers or offered a smoke and not want it (rather then forcing myself to not have it now it smells disgusting to me).
I recommend the Spearmint as it gives you a slight burning sensation/head rush unlike the other flavours (including normal mint) which I think helps as it gives you a physical reaction to help your brain (kinda recreates the slight burn in your lungs/throat when you smoke).
And while they say they release nicotine for an HR I often leave it in my mouth for 5 or so hr as having it in my mouth and it still having slight flavour tricks my brain into thinking I'm having nicotine when I'm not. So it's also weaning me off nicotine itself. When I first started I was having 5 pouches a day and would have to have my first pouch immediately after waking up. Now I'm on 2-3 a day and as I type this I've been awake for about 5hr and haven't had one yet, though not having one first thing in the morning is uncomfortable I'm now pushing myself to go longer before taking it so I can wean myself off.
Obviously I'm sure there are some heath issues with the nicotine pouches and it's not getting rid of the addiction just the source of it BUT I'm sure it's better for your health then cigs and vapes and they come in different strengths. So the idea is you take them till you aren't tempted to smoke. Then you decrease how many you take, the strength you take and eventually you just stop.
But again only recommend the Spearmint as it seems to have other benefits that the other flavours I've tried don't have.
@@thebloodyenglish6620 I remember during highschool, about 12 years ago, they were a thing, even had them too and found them more enjoyable than cigarette's. Didn't take long for the government to make them prohibited. Maybe I could ask my German uncle from across the border because I think Germany still has them. Anyway, thanks for the info, I appreciate it!
Same, now I'm 36 and have been quit for 4 years. It's really all mental. I know I heard that and never believed it but it's true. It's only so difficult because you see it as such a huge, unachievable task in your mind. And as soon as you quit and get a craving it makes you freak out and spiral. The huge deception is that it's soooooo addictive and soooo hard to quit. That's worse and more evil than the actual nicotine. It's really not that big of a deal. Just quit, you'll feel some withdrawals for a bit but it's no big deal. You've done much harder things in your life. This is no big deal and you can do it easily. That's the mental shift that needs to happen, then you will quit.
Yup, same thing for me with the vapes, I do it all the time and can't help but feel I would've been better off going outside and smoking occasionally again like I used to
I'm certain there are better ways to meet people than smoking cigarettes lol. Weird that everyone is connected more than ever yet so disconnected at the same time

Where I work you can take breaks whenever you want to and light up a cigarette. However, if you are taking a break and not smoking it is like viewed as you are not doing anything, however if you are smoking it is viewed as oh he is just smoking. Plus my boss smokes a lot and she always says let's go have a cigarette. Whereas if I wasn't smoking it would be weird because then I would just not be doing anything. I also only get to see my friend when he comes out of the office to smoke. So when I see him come out to smoke, I smoke with him. This goes the same with the other person at my work we only ever get to talk when he comes out for a cigarette. None of the people that smoke would be outside during work hanging out except for if they were smoking... It is a sad reality.
Personally I will mostly just smoke if someone else is out there, or if I need to get something done I might just finish it on the forklift, or finish the cigarette while working on something in the bays or something.
The thing that makes me laugh is that people spend lots of money and effort on skin care, working out, yoga, eating healthy, saving money everywhere and so on...and then smoke! I mean I was also like this, I started 10 years ago, but now I'm almost 24 y/o and I'm 8 days smoke-free and I really hope I can quit forever because it is really a stupid thing to do to yourself
I've been a smoker and let me tell you something. After 2 or 3 years I still get fucking cravings, they are not as strong and its fairly easy to stay on track but goddam it has been years since I stopped. The worst part is that I wasn't a smoker for long so I can't even imagine people that have been addicted for years. Last thing, I started like everyone else, "Just one every now and then, when socializing" but then one day it all changes and now your smoking daily. Don't start, there is no point.
You don't want that addiction. The younger you start, the harder it is to quit. My mom lost her leg due to effects of smoking. It killed her 18 months later because of the meds she was given because her stump got mrsa in the hospital. She was a nurse too. She started at 18
Oooof yeah, MRSA still being a killer is a nasty jolt of reality - I even saw a poster about it when I was staying a few nights in hospital back in May.
People make a huge fuss about doctors, nurses and equipment technicians in hospitals - but without the janitors keeping it all clean you are just as likely to end up coming out with something you didn't have going in.
Sorry about your mom.
I started when I was 14 and quit when I turned 21. As soon as I hit 18 I was smoking 2 packs a day. Cigarettes are awful and it's one of those things that you're better off never trying it.
My mom was addicting to smoking to, it ruined her. She wanted to become a full nurse but smoking ruined that to. She got into rehab though in another part of the world and is currently working to get money to come back to where I am.
@Ntmoffi I hear you. I started at 10 1/2. I quit at 18 & took it back up several times. Her addiction was so strong that even when her liver was failing, she insisted on smoking. She accidentally set her shirt on fire because part of liver failure is cognitive problems. We refused her cigarettes anymore. She was in rehabilitation to strengthen her to come home. Unfortunately, it was a place that she worked. They bought her cigarettes & ignored that she needed to go to the hospital.
Smoking vs h3ntai/p*rn. Which is worse?
I'm a Gen X and a non-smoker. Even our generation knew it was bad. That said, I remember in my career how many jobs, career decisions, etc. were made by the smokers at the smoking area on a daily basis. I literally started going for my "Second hand smoke break" so I could rub shoulders with our executives and network. Yes, it helped my career. To be fair, I grew up in So Cal in the 60s and 70s, so breathing carcinogens was like my entire childhood. Second hand smoke on a clear blue day in a southern town was probably healthier than the stuff I grew up on.
Yeah, not so much recently I'm afraid. First, employers know that hiring a smoker means there's an additional 30-60 minutes/day they won't be performing, and probably an equal amount of time they will be niccing and less focused. Second, no smoker was ever turned off by the lack of smoke on the breath of a business contact, but vice versa, not so much. It's no fun sitting in a meeting next to a guy who had to go out and relieve himself with a hot-burner right before the meeting. And I'm a former smoker of about 25 years.
actually socializing during smoking is great, is simple and easy and short... NO OTHER activity allows that

Ugh, smoked for 20 years and tried to quit every year for 15 of those years. Only recently ditched the addiction for good when the smell of smoke makes me feel ill instead of wanting one. It's a terrible addiction that makes you stink and really does nothing for you
As a 42 year old smoker, I genuinely wish I could go back in time and slap my younger self when I tried my first cigarette.
I smoked heavily from the age of 16 to 31 and I finally quit just a few months ago. I was scared to quit for a long time because how of how hard everyone said it was. I was recommended the book "Allen Carr's Easy Way To Stop Smoking" and I have to say that changed my life. It's not full of scare tactics or saying how bad we all know smoking is, but instead unveils how the smoker's mindset is just brainwashing. In it he even tell the reader to keep smoking while they read. I've completely flipped my view on smoking and I don't even have the urge to smoke anymore. If you want to quit, I HIGHLY recommend that book.

25 years of a pack a day, few years older than yourself, but now 4 months smoke free thanks to vapeing. And now feeling 100 times better, it's not easy but give a vape an attempt, it's never too late.
As a gen x’er, EVERYONE smoked. Me and my friends started when we were 14, and it was completely normal. It is extremely noticeable how few people I see smoking now. Its almost rare to even smell one in traffic now. This is a great thing. Nicotine addiction sucks. I’ve quit many times. Its been over a decade since I have smoked tobacco, and I still think about it from time to time.
In my case, it's stress. Having ADHD and being misunderstood while also being impulsive pushed me into smoking and energy drinks. I currently am obligating myself to stop smoking, while energy drinks was easy AF to quit

I worked at a McDonald's and I remember one night where every single person was getting together after work except for me, because they knew I didn't smoke weed. It is viewed that if you are outside smoking you are doing something however if you were to go out and not smoke then you aren't doing anything.
My Dad told me once that cigarettes were a passive aggressive cowards way to harm themselves. I had smoked for years and after reflecting on his words I could see the truth in it. I quit that same month.
Worse, they are a passive aggressive way to harm everyone else around you too that isn't directly smoking.
I actually started drinking in pubs more after the smoking ban in closed public spaces came into effect in my country - before that I just couldn't stand going into those places with all the smoke at busy times.
Did he ever tell you what the 'courageous' way to harm oneself might be as well, perchance?
By saving a life or two maybe
Hmm
That seems like a pretty melodramatic way to think of smoking cigarettes. Smoking a few cigarettes or inhaling some second hand smoke is not going to kill anyone, but tobacco does have some benefits, as well as simply being very enjoyable. I don't see how it's any more cowardly than enjoying a piece of cake. How does your dad view cigars or pipes?

Agree. Not sure about women but when looking at photos of adult men from around 1870 to 2010 across the world, quite safe to say smoking is linked to accelerated physical aging, especially hair loss.
Up till 1970, a sizable portion of men really looked old by 40 and were losing a large portion of their hair.
Not a coincidence men in less developed nations with higher incidence of smoking appeared to age faster than their white western counterparts.
Another aging aspect was the loss of voice clarity. When listening to some WW2 generation persons who were in their 60s as of around 1985, a considerable number had weaker voices.
As of 2015, the voices of a considerable number of white western men in their 60s sounded as if they had not aged much since they were 35.

At my first job, ALL of management smoked cigarettes, except for me and one other manager. The two of us were still really close with the rest of the team and would even hang out with them on smoke breaks. No one ever tried to get us to smoke. Most of them really respected our choice to NOT smoke.
I think many times the "peer pressure" to smoke, drink, or do drugs is self inflicted. And if you do have people pressuring you to do those things, hang out with different people, because those people are not your friends.

Smoking is not sexy, it’s not cool, it’s an addiction a lot of us working class people get pulled into as teenagers from seeing our parents trying to manage there stress with something harmful. The fact that celebrities are trying to make it a fad again makes me angry, sad and everything in between.
I have since I was 12. Smoke more cigarettes. We have to fight back against the vape smokers.
I completely agree. It's sad that smoking is coming back. I've been smoking since 12, and now that I'm 27, I've tried to quit many times but have failed over and over. It's terrible for you, and the amount of money you spend smoking for what feels like stress relief in the moment is so dumb. Don't smoke kids.
@@misanthropicservitorofmars2116 ah yes big brain time. vaping is gay, smoking is less gay but is stupid nonetheless
I was at a school, where almost nobody smoked but as soon as I started learning my first job I am one of the only people that doesn't smoke. Everytime I have a break I am one of the only people that doesn't go to the smoking area.
Quitting nicotine really isn’t that hard. You’re not doing heroin. Pull yourself together and stop if it’s bothering you.
I’ve lost so many members of my family to lung cancer whether it’s from being a chain smoker, a casual smoker, a cigar smoker, or only smoking at work to get a smoke break in the 80’s and quitting later. Lung cancer, like all cancer, is terrifying. I watched the woman I was named after slowly break down, seeing the tumors on her back as the cancer metastasized, hearing as her voice diminished because she couldn’t breathe on her own anymore. Kids today who are smoking are ensuring that their children and family will have to watch them wither and die. It’s selfish.
People don’t die from lung cancer from smoking cigars, unless they are confused and inhale them for some reason
@@user-te3qq1rb7uyou can still got several types of cancer with cigars
For every story like this there's an opposite one, my Grandmother smoked from when she was 12 years old every single day, she died at 98 years old, 86 years of smoking, my mother is in her early 70s now and has smoked for just as long.
Hey iam 23 from Germany thought I tell you how I think about it I was raised in a Smoking family and allways said I won’t smoke when I turned 18 I started to smoke sometimes at football games and then started to smoke at work because some shit with my dad happened and it was something to get along with the stress from it
And I think overall that the expectations in all day life is so high that we try to get along with stress to have 5 minutes of relief 😕
Edit I also smoke more because I want to feel something for example if tobacco is not strong enough I don’t enjoy it
😂 LITERALLY THE APPLE KILLED ME. After a late night gym session, looking out into the dark night and eating an apple just hits different
