Friedrich (Louis Garrel from Le Redoutable and Two Friends) says goodbye to Jo (Saoirse Ronan from Lady Bird and Brooklyn) before leaving for California. Once he is gone, Meg (Emma Watson from Harry Potter and Secret Circle) and Amy (Florence Pugh from The Falling) convince Jo that she loves him and that she cannot let him go. They accompany her to the train station. She finds Friedrich to tell him to stay and they kiss. In New York, Mr. Dashwood (Tract Letts from Lady Bird and The Post) agrees to publish Jo's novel after his daughters demand to know how it ends, but he refuses to accept the protagonist remaining unmarried in the end. To appease him, Jo ends her novel with the protagonist, herself, stopping Bhaer from leaving for California.

What’s the movie Little Women about?
In nineteenth-century Massachusetts, with their father away serving in the Civil War, the women of the March family - the loving matriarch, Marmee (Laura Dern from Mask and Wild), and her four daughters, Jo (Saoirse Ronan from Lady Bird and Brooklyn), Meg (Emma Watson from Harry Potter and Secret Circle), Amy (Florence Pugh from The Falling), and Beth (Eliza Scanlen) - are left all alone to fend for themselves. Faced with genteel poverty, the fledgeling author, Jo March, is struggling to make a name for herself in male-dominated New York City; considerate Meg is now married, and the artistically inclined, Amy, is in Paris with their affluent Aunt March (Meryl Streep from Out of Africa and The Iron Lady). However, the news of talented Beth's illness will reunite the sisters under the same roof. But, more than anything in the world - much to the disappointment of the handsome next-door neighbour, Theodore "Laurie" Laurence (Timothee Chalamet from Call me by your name and Beautiful Boy) - the fiercely independent Jo yearns for freedom.

I love the part with the editor’s family, Greta Gerwig did a wonderful job adding in that little nod to the little girls who helped get the real Little Women published in the first place. The book would never have been published and exist in the world today if it hadn’t been for the three daughters of LMA’s publisher begging for the ending to the story after they got their hands on the original half-manuscript she submitted

Writing a book is always a collaborative effort, with publishers and others putting their two cents in. I am glad they did.
I always wondered if Jo being told to marry off her heroine was Louisa May Alcott's way of telling us that she was forced to marry off Jo.
Definitely was, Louisa originally wanted Jo to stay single as she had 0 intention to marry and Only wanted to focus on her career. I don’t know if this is true but I believe LMA wanted each of the March girls to represent the basic outcome for a woman’s life during those times. Would you marry for love? Would you marry for stability? Be unmarried. Or be unlucky and succumbed to the dreaded sickness?
Yes, that was the point of the director adding the scene here. It isn't in the book.
As in, if it had been up to her, Jo would have stayed single?
@@joshuadesautels Yes. Bhaer's character was deliberately unpalatable both visually and in terms of personality, out of LMA's spite over being pressured to marry off Jo. He's always made more handsome.and nice in the adaptations, this one included.
I don't know.. Remember when Jo said she didn't want to fall into that trap of women are only for one thing? To sell her story, it would of been a scandal to leave the lady unmarried. Alcott's family were transcendentalists. They had views that many didn't believe in at the time. Jo and Bhaer had much in common and respect for each other. Their love would grow over time. Aunt March has a big house that could become a school. They seem to have joyful times, kinda like she had with her sisters. I think this slowly became love.
I do not understand why she needs a carriage to catch up to him, he just left. He's probably still walking to the street.

For those confused, the 1994 version allowed viewers to see the story through the eyes of the book. The 2019 version was so we could see through the eyes of Louisa May Alcott.
Louisa May Alcott likely didn't want Jo to end up married but was forced to write it in anyway for the same reason that Jo is given by the publisher. This is why the scene leading up to and during Jo confessing to Friedrich is so dramatic and over the top, it's supposed to look silly and unrealistic, because it is. It's fiction. While Book Jo ends up married, the Real Jo is happily single and devotes herself to having a career. We get to see what Louisa May Alcott wanted for her beloved character.
It's important for women and girls to understand that if you're genuinely happy and content being single then that's totally fine. Marriage and being in a relationship isn't for everyone. Your happiness is the most important thing, do what is best for you.
I have to say I kinda like this scene in the 1994 little women better. It feels more intimate and real than dramatic with everyone surrounding them in a busy train station having her rush off in a carriage. A quiet rainy road between trees with the only two souls being Jo and Frederick feels more them I think
The dramatic “movie like” quality of this scene is intentional by Gerwig because in reality LMA only wrote it for the fans (as noted by the editor in the scene).
I honestly disagree, I loved this scene because you see how close the sisters and the entire family are, even Laurie’s grandfather who isn’t technically related to any of them, but has still been a loved part of this family for so many years. They bolster Jo’s confidence and help her to see the truth she’s so blind to, and remind her that despite losing Beth, despite being older and more independent from one another, despite all their differences, they’ll still always have her back and want the best for her
The dramatic acting is intentional in order to emphasize that this scene is fake and never really happened in Jo's story.

If I'm being honest, I prefer this version. In the 94 version both actors seemed uncomfortable. Maybe that was a character choice?

First I saw 2019 film then 1994 film, and I can say that I will watch 1994 again and again. 2019 is one time watch movie.

Louisa May Alcott author of "Little Women" was inspiration at the dawn of the pro-feminist movement. Originally wanting to title her book "Little Vaginas" was considered too risque for turn of the century publishers which were primarily men.

1994 version seems more serious, and better
2 things I hated about 2019 version they tried to make Amy likeable and were sucessfull cuz people started liking her . Also the middle aged man like c'mon you casted a quite handsome man for him . I loved the rest of the movie
What’s wrong with making Amy likable?
I dont think audiences of today would really like joe with such an older man as they did in 1994. I personally thought that was weird after watching the 1994 version couple days ago
Why was it bad to make Amy likable?
In the book, Amy is kind of spoiled and self centered. Just like when she wasn't allowed to go to the theater, she tossed Jo's novel manuscript in the fire. There are a lot of instances where she threw tantrums just because she doesn't get her way. Still, if they want to portray a better image for Amy in the movie then that's okay, esp. if the viewers haven't read the book.
