My banjo instructor wrote down tablature for this down the neck part for me to learn. I'm actually just learning from you so I hope he doesn't notice any discrepancies. Ha.
It's interesting how when broken down it barely sounds like the song, just the way banjo sounds. Awesome to see this is the anatomy behind such a catchy talented and fast piece of music
This is the correct way of playing Foggy Mountain. The other two guys on RUclips have wrong fingering on one and dumbed down licks on both. Great job. I knew there was something wrong with the other videos.
Just started learning this with my banjo teacher. He uses a slightly different arrangement but its similar enough that this video will help me a lot. 6 months ago I never thought I'd be able to learn FMB.
I’m a guitarist and I recently started listening to bluegrass and it’s really great I could listen to the banjo in foggy mountain breakdown all day and still love it
Great vid Mason, well done ! I've not done a lot banjo-wise for a few weeks, but it definitely makes me want to get going again, so thanks a lot for that ! Cheers Steve :0)
thanks for this Mason, I just got a banjo which has been lent to me (I will be getting one for myself at christmas!) I really love this song and this is a really great video for me to learn from, thank you!
@@oldgoat50 thank you for your insight, I have been doing pretty well on the roll so far, and as for the speed I'm okay if its slower than the original at first
@@ammonitegamer4165 As one said, slower is better. Good luck. I have R.W Jameson sitting here and had a local guy set it up with good strings, and bridge adjustment and for $350 it sounds as good as the big ones.
You popped up after depressing morning news. Kick start coffee better with a banjo picker than agitation of the circus. I was in Los Angeles years ago for two years ( they can keep it) and started with banjo lessons from Bill Knoph who learned from Doug Dillard, one of the hillbillies on the old Andy Griffith/ Mayberry show. Bill, was more of a melodic style player, not my thing but a good teacher. There were a few at The Blue Ridge Picking Parlor, who once had a bluegrass band that never made notoriety but great musician's. Funny story about one and rather innocent stupidity.... Howard Yearwood, taught guitar but remember these guys were bluegrass players. I always wanted to learn Stairway to Heaven so I grabbed piano sheet music, my guitar and figures they would eject me and my request to the curb. Howard chuckled and said he could play anything if I had the !using notations. So we go down the hall and take a room and my back s to the door. He struggles some but was doing fairly well. I never looked but the door opens, a arm teaches over my shoulder and a voice says, "that's not how it's played." The guy played it perfectly and left. Howard sat there stunned and I chuckled asking what the matter was. I have never been one to memorize things like sports stats, every member of a hand etc. "That was Jimmy Paige." He about fell off his chair when I asked who the hell that was. ha, ha!
Great video! I appreciate that you were able to keep the rhythm at such a slow pace. One suggestion: maybe do the song at a medium pace as well. It's hard to get a feel for the rhythm when it's really slow and when it's really fast it's hard to follow some of the finer points. Doing the full song at a medium pace would help to pick up on the rhythm a bit more. Thanks!
@@MasonCroneMusic all good brother ! Thank you! I was fortunate enough to find some tablature online last night that had two variations of the foggy mountain roll
Unfortunately even with about 2 years of guitar finger style , this is a little out side my skill set . That’s okay still gonna keep learning ! Even tho I can’t play the whole thing, definitely still taking some parts out and having fun!
Thanks! It just takes time, really all you can do is work on it slowly and practice as much as you can. Make sure you have every note smooth, then your speed will gradually increase over time as you get more comfortable with it.
Hey man great lesson! Quick question, sometimes the tabs show a hammer on or slide with a note played at the same time as the second note as the hammer on/slide but when your playing it slow you play the note after the hammer on/slide. Which one should i follow when playing up to speed??
Reply requested ... Is this banjo your playing as great sounding as I'm hearing or the recording equip used making it sound so good? This is a Ibanez 200 or 300 right?
@@MasonCroneMusic I'm laughing, I went to research as I'm a old fart and suffer a bit of what I now call Biden syndrome and I was a healthcare professional. Oh yeah, banjo songs sound totally different when played slow.

This is an excellent breakdown of the timeless classic, Foggy Mt. Breakdown! I send my thanks and congrats on a totally successful instruction.

Get a cheap one to start. I had a Scruggs way back and never got my roll fast enough. Sold it to go on an Alaska cruise .🥴

Great tutorial man, it's great to see others the same age as me interested in this instrument and music!
Thanks!
Howdy mason, I just wanted to take a second to say thanks a ton.
Thanks for breaking down the breakdown! Heading to Patreon and will buy a few lessons!
HOLY CRAP wow this is going to take a minute to learn
Very thorough. Now i'll have to do one for c tuning
Thanks! I'm sure you will...😂
Great job Mason! 😀👍🪕
Nice lesson! That’s pretty close to the version I play. Sounded great!
Thanks!

Try recording yourself at a slow pace when practicing and then speed it up to 1.5x or 2x to see what it sounds like sped up,
Good suggestion
It would be helpful if you showed the rt hand finger as well
Preciate the vid man! I was looking at the tabs and it was like looking at chinese until i heard you play it haha
Really good tutorial 👍🏻
Thanks man!
Every banjoist has their own version. I do the first part slightly different to avoid playing the same string twice with the same finger
Cool! I tend to play it as close to the way Earl did as I can the first time, but then I add some licks of my own in random places after that.
That was Great!!
Thanks!
Thank you very much! Is the second part available?
It is
great job brother 👍😍❤
Thanks Gary🙂

Does your banjo play as good as a deering goodtime? Is there a huge difference in the neck?
great lesson Mason. Quick question, I can't seem to make the 2_3 hammer on lick sound fast enough. any tips?

Do you have to use your thumb on that 2nd roll? I was doing pretty good with my middle and index finger. Just wondering… thanks
lol who or what did you get into a fight with
thanks
How fast are you playing? Like, what number on the metronome?

It depends on which one. Some sound better to do at the same time, some sound better to do after. Just go with what your ear likes!
Thanks
Thanks for watching!
Where is the 2nd part of this song?
I have another video covering the up the neck part
