One of the best songs! I remember buying this album back in the day, and this was the song that I hit repeat on the most.

Trying so hard to understand is why many of us ditch the narrow confines of the evangelical fold and then are deemed "apostate" by Trump supporters and even "Heaven's Metal". But you can't stop someone from ascending to higher tiers of consciousness if that's his or her calling and deepening capacity. Anyhow, I remember playing this song in my brother's friend's basement 25 years ago or so. good times

one of my favorite GT songs. I consider the Pete solo song "i don't need you" to be a sequel. AWESOME song if you never heard it... can't find it on YT (2018 update- it is on YT now). the mirror image of this- whereas this is "i need You but i have angst about that" ("i try so hard to understand"), the newer tune is "i don't need You but i also have angst about that" ("tell me what i'm supposed to do"). But that raises the question of him doing these older tunes since he's now, what, agnostic? I have absolutely nothing against them doing anything, but, it's at least.. weird no?
I am Christian, but a hopeless underground rock addict. so i can't listen to CCM. sometimes I try to,
but it usually grates on me quick. back in the day GT were a revelation. pete's obvious angst was completely relateable. when he retroverted, i was like "really sucks, but kinda figures". mike herrera from mxpx is another one. although that band plays upbeat music they were the rare Christian band I enjoyed, now he's out of the fold too. maybe Christianity and authentic rock can't mix :P

I think Christian culture is the issue, not the faith or the music. American Christianity has to look proper to so many they reject the very things that could bring more of us together. It's really sad actually.

The Christian music industry pumps out product for the flock. There are some good artists that are challenging...but many that just put out homogenized music that in some ways is souless. It is a business...and to make it, most stick to the formula and don't rock the boat. Grammatrain didn't...they weren't afraid to show feelings and ask hard questions. I don't believe Jesus would want to be a product...he came for the broken, and imperfect...for the losers...like me. I'd rather hear pete sing about his real feelings than go through the motions. It's ok to have doubts...if you don't...i worry about you...i just wanna hear this band play! They are real and awesome!

I write songs...and have been in and out of church my whole life. I write Christian and secular songs. The songs I wrote while not going to church are hard to sing when I'm going to church and vice versa...or at least used to be. I've come to realize that they are all part of me, and my perspective changes daily. Whether I'm questioning my faith, or confirming it...it's a struggle...it's not an easy thing. Both are part of who I am..but I definitely could see Pete feeling like he's being insincere singing some of his old songs!

    • @LetsGoMetsGo33

@@robertbondurant5223 Like you said, questioning is normal, but I am happy that you hold on to faith, I do believe that is important. I hope Pete "comes back" if he hasn't (I know he wrote for God's Not Dead 2, but perhaps that was just work?). For musically inclined Christians, relatable spiritual songs can be helpful in staying strong in the spirit. I rarely put on the local CCM FM stations, but when I do, it's usually so formulaic to my hearing, little of the real feelings we both wrote about. I like older hymns and stuff, because I grew up with them and I find them musically and lyrically deeper than "Evangelical worship music", and I like, for example, Johnny Cash's spiritual songs, but little that is new. There was a minute in the mid to late 90s when I found some Christian music I liked; maybe it was because some music that I like was more mainstream then, so CCM was more open to those styles (which in turn featured forms of expression that I could connect better with). Since then I found a few kinda Christian alternative folk acts that I enjoyed, but not all that much. If you have music available, I'd be interested to check it out :)

    Grammatrain - Need
I wear a face that seems to be
    The image of maturity
The only eyes that see in me
    Know my desperality
And I'm a man that’s found his way
By having not a lot to say
I wanna tell You that I need You
I know Your anything they see
    An image of maturity
But if I was what I should be
Wouldn't I be on my knees?
And I'm a man that’s found his way
By having not a lot to say
I wanna tell You that I need You
And when I fall into Your hand
I see myself for what I am
It only shows me that I need You
I try so had to understand

i was very surprised to see them do this song due to Pete's current stance on faith/religion. Such a great song though. Still captures the heart and soul

Yup. What you don't see is when we started this song the first time it happened there too. He stopped the song and explained he got the lyrics wrong and we started the song again, only for him to do it twice. Hey man, it had been 10 years for us! :)

Why congratulate his lost faith? Even if you're a pagan, you should realize he wrote his best stuff when motivated and influenced by his faith in Jesus. As a nothing but a music fan, you should rethink that. I will pray for Pete and for you as well my friend.
