@@colby69420 I think he used flats pretty much the entire time. "Rusty Cage" is a testament to the P bass with flats. I tried for years to get that sound right, and the secret was in the flats!!!
Goddam Bassist!! A silent killer, when you realize it, you start liking it, and then the Bass guitar becomes a weapon of mass destruction. Greeting from India \m/
@@zerozipper4299 quite weird that he used flatwounds. Normally the "scratchy" sound (in the beginning) caused by sliding fingers slightly on the string is a sign of roundwounds
Soundgarden is the one band I can nail the tone of, because my bass strings die completely within a month because of my super sweaty hands. Kinda a nice luxury, lol
Now that you say that... I always found those string squeaks quite uncanny, but he might just be playing octave double-stops on some old gunky strings. Most of the time he only does fifths that way, but guess what... listen closely at the end of The Day I Tried To Live

He's the only grunge bass guitarist I can think of who uses flatwounds. They're so rich sounding.
I don’t believe he was using flat wounds at this point yet

@@Wolfdragon92584 he didn’t use a p bass for recording that song, nor flats. he used really, really dead GHS heavy strings on a jazz bass.
@@cactus-mcjacktus I think he still did during the King Animal shows. There's that rig rundown video and his tech mentions this
These sound like rounds with the tone knob rolled off. Monstrous.
wow, I wish this album reflected levels just a bit closer to this. super interesting vibe with the bass up front
So heavy...so lovely.

This helps to clarify what Ben was doing greatly. Thanks!
At 0:20 and 0:26 it is a bass sound ?!!
Its so fucking heavy and doomy
This is just so dark you have the impression to be in hell
Sounds like his strings are about to fall off lol
He used flat wound strings and never changed them according to a interview.

I fact checked myself and you are right. Just really dead round wounds.
@@zerozipper4299 he uses roundwounds. He never changes them unless they pop and break.
@@kingc5341 same here, because of an interview where Ben said that lol
That’s that Dirty bass 🤘🏼🤘🏼
My face is recoiled in utter disgust. This is so dirty!🤘

Is it just me or does the bass have a strong octave effect?

A-ha! I could've sworn I saw your name somewhere before. Just gonna add that I really enjoyed watching your covers. Keep on rockin'! ;)
Ah, thanks! Thank you for sharing all these bass tracks! I love listening to them.
@@deck16andahalf about the old gunky strings, I believe I read somewhere he never changes his strings. He plays on them till they break.
It's true that he never changes his strings till they break. Plus he uses flat wounds strings.
I think he uses a light wah in some moments
Looks a little like Ryan Styles. XD
Older comment, but this is hilarious!
this is dirty as FUCK
Can you post the isolated bass track for this one? :O
It's actually a drums with bass track, but I made you believe otherwise with the magic of modern audio editing! Would you like to hear it anyway?
Yes I would love to hear it! :)
Great, for the moment all of my multitrack stuff is "inaccessible", so I'll let you when I find it
@@deck16andahalf Any progress?
If not, I think isolated soundgarden tracks have actually been deleted from RUclips, I can't find many of them
