Hey Aaron, to be honest, some people really do need a 1 on 1, mainly to make sure you actually practice! But if you can do that yourself and have the desire, that's the most important part! Also if you ever need any help, I am here. Some students even send me videos from their phones, so that is also good too. Wishing you a great guitar day and beyond!!
I am over fifty and I don’t have the time to waste on learning guitar. It is now February 11 th 2023. I am glad you took the time to share these videos. I haven’t been able to put the guitar down thanks to you. It also helps drown out the nagging roommate who thinks she my wife. 😂 By February 11 th 2024. I will update my progress. Wish me luck.
Hi T Tran, I'm glad the lessons are helping keep your sanity and besides, it's a lot of fun once you can maneuver around on it. I look forward to hearing back with your progress on guitar as well- ha ha.. I am wishing you all the luck in the world!! bob
I'm 56 and have been putzing around on the guitar for decades but never gave myself the time to learn how to play and understand what I was playing. This is the first guitar lesson video I came across and I'm glad I did. It was frustrating to play at first. I had to keep pausing the video. Then after about 15 minutes of stops and starts my fingers finally knew where to go and it felt great. Like learning a new language. I played nonstop for almost an hour. My arthritic knuckles are aching but it was worth it. Thanks for the video.
Hey Mister Natural, thank you for taking the lesson and sharing your experience here. I'm really glad you stayed with it and didn't give up (which many people will do). Wishing you more "nonstop" playing 2024 and beyond!! bob
Prayers to you and your family! We recently placed my Dad into hospice. One of the most painful things I’ve ever done. I try to see him as often as possible and so hard to watch him continue to deteriorate. Thanks for all your great lessons!!!!
Hey Puppy Doc, I am sorry to hear this news and know all too well what you are going through. I will say prayers for your dad, you and your family. Hoping the music will be at least a little diversion of peace for you. Wishing you the best- bob
@@AcousticGuitarVideosLessons Thanks so much! I've been a subscriber for a year or two and you have helped my playing tremendously! As a true beginner player who is primarily interested in finger style, you videos have been perfect in everyday. The playing has been much more fun and relaxing!! I still struggle with a death grip on the neck at times but it's a work in progress! :) Safe travels my friend and may you find some peace as you endure your coming journey and may your Mom make a speedy recovery!
@@puppydoc7949 Ahh, the dreaded death grip- could probably kill a horse if you squeezed his neck...ha ha.. I don't think anyone can really play well when they are not relaxed- I certainly don't. And playing on stage I have to go through this whole ritual of what to do's, and what not to do's in order to play well. One of the first things I tell myself is "stay simple" and solid (as opposed to wildly going for it at all times). In other words let the music come to me instead of trying to force something. So I guess this is the relaxation part! Somehow by just being prepped, the shows go a lot better when I'm able to psych myself into the zone. And same thing with studio sessions which can be a lot of pressure. One thing that is always good is to record yourself, and that's something that I did when I got real serious about music. They have these free apps on phones that are really great- back when I started I was using cassette tapes. There's one in particular called Voice Record that has a microphone tilted sideways as their logo. Easy to operate and sounds great- just turned another friend onto this. Most people hearing themselves for the first time may become horrified , as what you hear while you are playing is very different than the playback. But if you are able to be constructively critical of what sounds bad, it's a great way to improve very quick.. you just have to be somewhat scientific and objective with the solutions. Little by little, the degree of errors will diminish if you can systematically work through and isolate the problem areas, but most likely it will overall be timing issues. Timing is really what separates good vs. not so good playing. Anyway, I could write 10 books on this, simply because I live in a studio. Thank you for the well wishes, and of course I am wishing you the best with your Dad as well. See you in a week or so!! bob
Hi Jo! Great to hear from you and thank you for taking the lessons here- and the kind words! I'm guessing you will continue with this course and there's a lot more as well. Wishing you a great guitar week too!! bob
Ty for teaching me this cord!!!! Nvr played before. You made it easy for an inexperienced person to learn and understand. Thanks again, you are a great teacher.
Thanks Bob, it’s 2 October 2023 in Ballarat and I am learning from your teaching. You are a good teacher, not just a demonstrator. I appreciate good teachers. Cheers.
Good Morning Bob! I just wanted to come on here and wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas and hoping your New Year brings everything joy and blessings to your home. Play my guitar everyday. Enjoying it! Keeping in touch here!
Hi Heather, it's so nice of you to think of me- I hope all is going well (sure sounds like it on the guitar!!!). I'm wishing you and your family a Great Christmas and New Year too. Looking forward to a good start to 2023 with more lessons and a new website!! Happy pickin' and thanks again Heather!!
I was having difficulty playing the chords without touching neighboring strings, but after taking your advice and clicking that button on the right on "how to hold the guitar for beginners" did the trick. My sounds are much clearer now. THANK YOU BOB.
wow, thank you so much! my mum bought me a guitar after i begged her for ages but I literally dropped it two weeks afterwards, but then I got guilty and decided to pick it up again, and as an absolute beginner, this helps so much!
Hi Ananya Yoonuch, thank you for taking the lessons here and I'm so glad they are helping- you have a great Mom to buy you a guitar!! Wishing you all the best- hope you keep going!! bob
This guy is great. I just started to learn the guitar at 60 years of age, he makes things easy to learn, especially for an old fart like me. I recommend anyone to watch and learn from him. Big👍 from me.
Hey Martin, great to hear from you and many thanks for the Big thumbs up recommendation! I'm very happy that the lessons are easy, but if you get stuck or have a question, please let me know. Wishing you a great guitar weekend! bob
Hi Kakembo Steven Gonzaga, so glad you are now playing guitar!!!!! Really happy the lessons are helping and wishing you all the best! Have a great guitar weekend!!!
Getting back into playing after a 40 year break. Hey! I had important things to do! I decided to forget everything I had learned from those idiot savants in my barracks. Back to basics. Your videos are the best I have come across. Thank you so much for throwing me a much needed bone. God bless.
Hey Michael, thank you for taking the lesson here!! 40 years... wow, that's a long break- ha ha.. No I get it- I'm constantly having things get in the way of my guitar (will have to do something about that). It might have been worth remembering if you were in a guitar boot camp or something- ha ha.. Anyway, glad to have you here- and if you need any help, just let me know. HI ettienne gerwel, thank you for taking the lessons with me and I'm glad you are learning guitar! You are still very young and you can do it!!! Sad news however, my mom passed away as she was not doing well at all and in hospice, so it was expected. I really miss her but know she is in a better place. Thanks again and if you need any help, please let me know. Happy pickin' !! bob
Very touched to learn your story, Bob. May this reunion take place under the best conditions in CA. Thanks to your both moms for giving birth or raising such a generous and talented son. Moreover, good idea to recall this fundamental chord in detail.
Hi Viv, thank you so much for your kindness. I just talked to my sister and mom is not doing so well, so it's probably going to be sad for me as the last time I saw here (before Covid) she was doing great. Anyway, I will let you know how it goes when I get back. Hope you have a good weekend my dear friend Viv!!
Hi Mario, great to hear from you and thank you and the kind words... really glad the lessons are helping! Please keep me posted with your progress and if you need any help, let me know. Wishing you a great guitar weekend + beyond! bob
I watched the original video like 5 years ago and got really good at it, but gave up learning guitar. Here I am trying to learn again and im right back at your videos. About a third of the way through the first lesson mt muscle memory cane back and I was playing the full thing in speed. Thank you so much for these
Hey Hallbjorn, thank you for coming back here and, isn't it amazing how your hands remembered how to do it.. (after all this time). Hopefully you will keep playing this time- Wishing you a great guitar year 2024!! bob
@@AcousticGuitarVideosLessons also, I realized if you play the picking pattern without holding a cord, it's a nice relaxing sound. If you play the picking pattern slowly in a D minor, it's instantly just really sad 🤣
Hi Ej, thanks for taking the lesson here and the well wishes. I wish I had better news but mom passed away in September. When I went out to visit her, we had some good time together but I knew she wouldn't last long as she was in hospice. Everybody in the family is doing okay and I miss her so much. Many thanks and hope you are having fun on the guitar! bob
Hey again Betsy!! Thank you for the kind words and am happy that you found my channel!! I'm also really happy that you are continuing with the whole series😀🎸!! Have a great weekend and thanks again!! bob
This is amazing, I only ever tried fingerpicking within the last few days and watched your previous intro video. I've played guitar a little through the years, but I'm just amazed when you're like, hi, seven years later hahaha
Hi Whitney, great to hear from you and thank you for taking the lessons with me. Yea, I had to do insert this video as I received 100's of e mails asking for some visuals that I didn't have back in 2014. Hope you keep on pickin' and thanks again! bob
THE best, and most patient teacher, I've found on the net, imo. I already played a little guitar already, so for myself? The lessons were well explained & laid out. I can see where maybe there could be slight confusion, if a true beginner, but if you just put in the time? You'll get it, and it will stick with you for as long as you continue playing- if you take years off? Plan on starting again- but it will be MUCH easier, and will come back fairly fast. I was hoping all was well with you Bob, as we both had some difficult situations in our lives, yours w/your wife, and I lost my son back in July 2018, along with all the health issues I've been dealing with, a few years before that. I've just started getting back into it all myself- and I sure hope we'll get to see you every so often, even if it's not for any lessons, but just to say "Hi", & that all is well. Take Care brother. You've helped so many people, even more than you'll ever know, and all of it, out of the goodness of your own heart. Something which I will always be forever grateful for! God Speed!
Hey Rick! It's always so great to hear from you and hope you are doing well! Yes, I don't know how many times I've gone down the guitar rabbit hole only to realize that I was doing something wrong to start. As it turns out, I'm having to adjust my flatpicking and the way I hold the pick. Bad habits are indeed hard to break!! But then you realize that it's making it so you can't move ahead. By that time you have no choice but to make a difficult alteration. So sharing this info is based on "what I should have done" and glad I am getting to some people who will be happy they got used to it the correct way. Life if full of tough events and now I have to get on a plane and visit my birthmom as she is very sick right now. It all makes one realize (as I know you know) what's really important in life and what's not. Anyway, wishing you many happy hours of guitar along with everything good in life as well. Thank you brother Rick, glad you are pickin' your guitar!! Chat soon!! bob
@@AcousticGuitarVideosLessons Absolutely brother- Change is the only Constant, as they say... sometimes? I really hate what "they say", even though they're right, lol. Prayers out to your mother, and for a safe trip as well. And will be looking forward to our next meeting. Take care.

Bob, you are an amazing teacher. I can't say enough about your method of teaching. You are just so good. So patient, you explain things so well, and you care about your students. I have gone back to the beginning of fingerpicking because I was away from it for so long. Been depressed during the last 18 months or so. It's been rough. Life has been rough. Anyways, thanks so much for your lessons and giving of yourself as you do. God bless you .
Hey Eric, great to hear from you and thank you for this note and your kindness. I'm hoping the tough times are behind you now. I know when I went through a lot of it that the music did help- I hope it helps you too. God's blessings Eric and wishing you a bright and happy week! bob

I left a comment on another video but meant to leave it here. Thanks so much for the clarification! I love your teaching style! You teach beginners like they are.....beginners! I'm curious as to why we aren't using the 3rd finger....? Perhaps that comes later. Thanks so much for sharing these videos with us!
Hey MsQuisch , ha ha... yes, I knew this would help as I did receive these questions over the years and thought inserting another video into this series would help. It's funny but a few people complained about the lessons being "too beginner"... But the tile does say Fingerpicking For Beginners" ha ha.. The origin of this picking pattern was popularized by Merle Travis and basically this pattern is called "Travis Style Picking".. It is interesting to note that Merle only used his thumb and index finger to do this pattern... But there's other patterns and techniques where you are going to use the 3rd finger. You see that a lot in classical fingerstyle. Wishing you a great day and thank you! bob
Ooh I am liking the look of this will definitely try it but currently 01.30 am whoops best not. Thanks though for taking the time for this great video.
Hi Cheryl, thanks for taking the lesson here and from what you are describing, it sounds to me like you don't understand something about what I have written out.. When you are ready, I'd be more than happy to address the issue (s) if I know what it is. Wishing you a happy weekend! bob

Hi Steaphan, great to hear from you and thank you for taking the lessons here- glad you found my channel. I'm really happy to hear that the lessons are helping you. Keep me posted- we are on lesson 1A and my best advice is to go slow and really be able to do the thumb part steady as possible, as everything revolves around the thumb in fingerpicking. As we go on, we'll do more easy chords to the song we are learning, and after that there's a follow up course as well. Lots to do here and if you need any help, please let me know!! Hi ॐ अखंड धर्मःॐ , thank you for taking the lessons with me and I'm glad you like the series. It does take a while to get used to using the middle finger, but it might interest you to know that the person (Merle Travis) that popularized this style (called Travis picking) only used the thumb and index finger. The same methodology of fingerpicking can be applied to a classical guitar as well when playing cords only not so? Your lessons are really quite something. Thank you.
Hey Walter, thank you for taking the lessons here and the interesting comment. I'm not sure I totally understand as classical usually follows strict guidelines to play a piece exactly as written whereas with this style, we are learning a basic rhythm pattern that works very well for backing a vocalist. Once we start to get more advanced (melody + the rhythm), this is where the two style use the same technique to play both parts. Chances are, you will never see a classically trained guitarist reading a chord chart. I hope I answered your question? Wishing you good guitar 2024! bob

Hey M Zieg, great to hear from you and thank you for taking the lessons here. I don't know how much time you spent on this one video, but I generally tell everyone to slow down and get one part at a time correct first before moving ahead. Some people can move ahead quickly while some people move a lot slower. But no matter how fast or slow anyone learns, the basic idea is to get in the reps and enjoy the process. If that's what you are currently doing then I say you are doing great. But if you are struggling though and not having any fun, please let me know because I can help. So the first question I have is and since you are on this lesson 1A, how did you do with lesson 1 of Fingerpicking For Beginners? Let me know okay... wishing you all the best on your guitar! bob
Excuses me sir one things you never sau where we must to look during practice? We must watch cords or me should do it watching els where? Tankyou very much I am a beginner 1st some wheels I could not even hit a string now so easily I practiceing thanks your lessons thankyou very very much.
Hi Anis Tito, it's great to hear from you and it sounds like you are making great progress with your guitar! So ultimately you want to look at your chord hand, but I know when you are first starting out it's difficult to take your eyes off the picking hand! Besides just doing a lot of repetitions, a good exercise is just to play the picking part without any chords and try not to look at it. When you can do that without looking, that means that your hands are remembering how to do it and probably ready to give your left hand your full attention (so hard to think of two things at once!). I hope this helps!!!! and keep me posted on your progress. Wishing you a great guitar week and many thanks for taking the lessons here!! bob

Hello, I have a question. Can we replace a chord with an easy one, for example we replace Dmaj7 bar chord by Dmaj7, does the song stay at the same tune?
Hi Manel, thank you for taking the lessons here and let me see if I can help with this question... It's a good one! So, there's very different sounds to chords as a regular D chord sounds different than a Dmaj7 chord. But depending on the song itself, it might be that a regular D chord will work instead of a Dmaj7. What song are you talking about? I can listen to see...
@@AcousticGuitarVideosLessons First of all thank you for replying to my comment. Here is the link ruclips.net/video/5AupN5gg6hA/видео.html wanna know if I can replace Dmaj 7 and C#m7 by other chords because I'm a beginner and I wanna play this song.
@@manelsahnoun6997 nice song, but you have to be able to play Barre Chords (unless you have a capo!)... if you have one, place it on the second fret.. that F#m chord would then be an Em position chord, and the Dmaj7 would then be a Cmaj7 position chord (regular C chord with your index finger off the second string). The C#m7 would be a Bbm7 (take a regular Am position chord and slide it up two more frets but don't play strings 5 and 6). With the capo, it's easy to transpose the chords, just count two notes down from the original chord, E F F# G G# A Bb B C C# D Eb (F# becomes E , Bb becomes A, C# becomes Bb , E becomes D etc) then change the chord to the appropriate chord designation such as major, maj7, minor etc. Without the capo, you can substitute is the Dmaj7 chord which is your index finger barring across strings 1, 2, and 3 on the second fret. C#m7 could be two different positions- (i'm picking these two but there's more- these are the easiest but they have limitations: 4 frets up with your ring finger 5th string, two frets up with your index finger barred across strings 4 3 and 2, and your pinky finger 4 frets up on the 3rd string. Limitation being you can't pluck strings 1 and 6 or 2 fret up middle finger second fret, 1 fret up 3rd string index finger, 2 frets up ring finger second string. Can play the open 1st string E but you can't pluck strings 5 and 6. One last thing, and this may be a while but I am taking requests: Go to this video and you can make a request. ruclips.net/video/nvR7SI67pVw/видео.html You can see that I have a lot of requests but what I will do is show the easiest way to play a song and use what's known as a plug and play pattern which is an easier way to learn the basics of a song. I hope this helps you Manel, it's a lot of info here! bob

What is finger picken? I understand chords strumming notes. Fingerprinting, what is the concept? Instead of strumming a chord stright down you just pick a chord top to bottom note at a time?
Hi Tommy, thank you for taking the lessons over here and yes, you are correct about the fingerpicking.. Fingerpicking in it's simplest form is playing a chord and picking notes from that chord in series (one or a few notes) instead of strumming. The advantage for learning this method for a beginner is- we get to pick and choose what notes we want to play and oftentimes, don't require "full standard chords" on the left hand. For beginners this means you could be playing something musical quicker without having to struggle so much on your chording hand. A more advanced guitarist can also play the melody and rhythm at the same time which means, it's more closely related to what you can do on the piano (with the left hand playing the bass notes and chords, and the right hand playing the melody). If you are just starting out on the guitar, I hope you will give this a try. As I go through my courses here, I raise the bar up a little each time and start to introduce you to the full chords that you will be able to strum as well. Wishing you a great 2024 on your guitar!! bob
Thank you C A... I just got home and I wish I had better news, but she's not doing well. Fortunately she is not in any pain and maybe that's how your prayers are being answered.

This does not match the first video. The first video pattern started on string 5. I couldn't figure out why this was confusing me. I went back and saw your string chart doesn't match first video.
Hi Jaloney, thank you for taking the lessons here and sorry for the confusion! So in lesson 1 which is here: ruclips.net/video/Z7xm_juNcPY/видео.html the chord is an Easy D chord as I call it, or technically a Dsus2 chord. One easy way to remember which string to pluck as our very first note in this pattern is- each measure starts on the lowest Root Note of the chord we are playing as the root note always is the same name of the chord we play. So for a D chord, it would pluck the lowest D note on the guitar which is the open 4th string. If it were an A style chord, then we would pluck the open 5th string (lowest root A note). a G chord would be 3 frets up on the 6th string (G bass root note) and an Em chord would be a E note open 6th string. So I'm hoping that makes sense!! Please get back to me as there's got to be some mistake, maybe you were watching another video or didn't see it clearly (I used an old camera back then). In the link I gave above, just go to lesson one and you will see we are alternating between strings 4 and 3 with our thumb starting on string 4. I wouldn't move ahead until you get this part right as you will be playing the wrong strings that are intended for the song we are learning in this series. Please let me know okay.. Thanks and have a great guitar day!! bob
Hi Oana, very sorry for the confusion! I think a lot of people didn't see me play string 1 and that's part of why I made this video, so I apologize for that. But I am 100% certain of playing that string 1 as that gives that D chord the sus2 sound that most any experienced musician would immediately recognize. If you are a visual person, you can go back and notice my middle plucking finger moving.. that's the finger I'm using to pluck string 1- Again I apologize but I hope this clears things up. So the pattern is - 4 rest 3, 2, 4, 1, 3, 2 for this Dsus2 chord (two fingered chord playing a total of four strings). In the lesson 2 of this series, we are going to do an easy A chord and will have to switch the strings we pluck. It's the same pattern, same movement but it does take some time to get used to changing the chords. I hope this helps Oana and wishing you Happy Holidays and a great guitar year 2022! bob

So what the update ??
My man you’ve forgotten to update

Thank you. This is a great explanation for a 4-string chord such as D. But what about a five or even 6-string chord such as G?

I want to learn this. wow. I started 3 months ago. I am 72 yrs. old
Hey M Zieg, great to hear from you and thank you for taking the lessons here.

Hello, Bob. Do you still have any of the documents available for this? I used to have a couple of sheets that I downloaded and printed which I used for practicing. It was always near my guitar, but I got busy and haven't picked up my guitar in a while and can no longer find my sheets. I think I got it originally from a link on "Let's Play Guitars Together- Study Guide V1.3, but I don't see any links for it now. Thanks for everything, Morgan
Hi Morgan, great to hear from you and glad you are back on the guitar! This last year I had to retire the study guides (for a number of reasons). But I do have the Let's Play Guitars course on my new website Fingerpickingwithbob.com which is my free membership site. The course now has all the study guide material conveniently underneath the video lessons, so unlike people who had trouble in the past getting lost between youtube and the study guide, there's now no way to get lost. I'll look out for you on the site and when I see your name, I'll unlock that course for you- Glad you are back!!

With the capo, it's easy to transpose the chords, just count two notes down from the original chord,
E F F# G G# A Bb B C C# D Eb (F# becomes E , Bb becomes A, C# becomes Bb , E becomes D etc)
then change the chord to the appropriate chord designation such as major, maj7, minor etc.
Without the capo, you can substitute is the Dmaj7 chord which is your index finger barring across strings 1, 2, and 3 on the second fret.
C#m7 could be two different positions- (i'm picking these two but there's more- these are the easiest but they have limitations:
4 frets up with your ring finger 5th string, two frets up with your index finger barred across strings 4 3 and 2, and your pinky finger 4 frets up on the 3rd string. Limitation being you can't pluck strings 1 and 6
or
2 fret up middle finger second fret, 1 fret up 3rd string index finger, 2 frets up ring finger second string. Can play the open 1st string E but you can't pluck strings 5 and 6.
One last thing, and this may be a while but I am taking requests: Go to this video and you can make a request.
ruclips.net/video/nvR7SI67pVw/видео.html
You can see that I have a lot of requests but what I will do is show the easiest way to play a song and use what's known as a plug and play pattern which is an easier way to learn the basics of a song.
I hope this helps you Manel, it's a lot of info here!

Thanks and have a great guitar day!!
bob
Maša
Hi Sala, I hope that's a good thing!
Wishing you the best on your guitar!!!
bob
no but you changed the strings! there was no string number 1 in there.
the counting is the same but very confusing that you changed the strings
