    I've been studying English since I was 7. Moved to the UK at 19. I have lived here for almost 13 years and am still learning. I can say for sure that every single technique that Lois shared are the best! If you follow his recommendations, you don't need to look any further. I can't express how much research and effort went into this video! Save it, as it will save you a lot of time! I only want to add that if you feel like you hit a plateau and are seeking new stuff, do an activity that you haven't done before, and you will be able to take your English to the next level! Thanks, Lois. Very excited about your app. Keep up the great work!

    It's refreshing to see a French person having mastered English. You have gone beyond mastering it - you have achieved native fluency, which is the holy grail. I can't help listening to you intently to see if I can detect any French accent but hats off to you - yes, you have an accent but it's American (I'm Australian), so you sound like a native speaker. Very impressive. En fait, je suis jaloux. Si je pouvais parler français comme ça, je serais trop content ! Bravo !

      I can tell he's not a native speaker by his accent, but it doesn't sound like a French accent. There are certain "tells" that give him away as not being a native (American) English speaker but he certainly does sound very good.

    I use spreadsheets instead of flashcards, but I organize it like an SRS system. It's less intimidating and I'm not overwelming by a lot of cards. I add a column for the day I write that sentence and the date when I review them. I also use three colors to color the cells: red for ones I struggle to memorize, green for those I've mastered, and yellow for ones I'm unsure about. By doing that, i can filter by the date and color.

      What do you find intimidating about flashcard apps?

    • @sekar9901
      @sekar9901 2 месяца назад +2

      @@loistalagrand using anki is less flexible, i can't choose what part i want to revise. With spreadsheet I can easy go back to the sentence i have revised long time ago. 1 card can appear a lot of time on anki (i know the point is memorization) but it can become boring and it feels endless with thousands card i make. For me personally, i can progress much faster using spreadsheet.
      I download text to speech and google translate add-on chrome as well, so i can use it on spreadsheet and hear the pronunciation.
      So the system is like anki but with less hassle.

      I improvise with adding more columns for explanation, tag, etc tho.

    I only have one problem with flashcards. A word in language A might translate as several different words in language B, depending on the content. When you ask Google Translate to translate a word, it often gives you a list of several words. This is probably a small problem in closely related languages (English and French), but a big problem for languages that differ more.

    Audio flash cards (SRS) instead of written ones? That is a totally awesome idea. Before modern technology (the internet, mp3 files) writing was pretty much the only way to learn a language. Why haven't study methods caught up with changes? So many students learn better with audio -- why not flashcards?

    transcribing an entire movie is in no way a lazy way of learning and it burns you out quickly and limits the amount of your comprehensible input….I think writing down words or phrases here and there and adding them to your Anki is more balanced and effective…

    I once practically ruined my comprehension listening skills by watching videos with subs. Simply because I programmed my mind to go the easier way, which was not trying to understand what's being said but, instead, reading what's being shown in the subtitles. Basically, once the subtitles were disabled, I felt something close to panic, sheer helplessness, as if 'nothing's gonna come to my rescue', where's my key to understanding everything? The most discouraging thing was when I was watching something together with a person who had obviously been learning the language way less than had, just here and there, and that very person would understand the audio, and I couldn't.
    So, be very cautious using subtitles. While they can help you greatly boost your vocabulary and ease your way into watching video in a language you don't quite know, relying solely on them may have very bitter consequences.
