    Great idea sticking that bolt in the tensioner to pry on! When i changed the water pump I actually dropped the motor a couple of inches to get the clearance, but your way is smarter and easier. I'll be using your way when i do the tensioner.

      Really is, I never actually have that flat serpentine belt tool around. If I replace the tensioner on my Grand Caravan I’m definitely going back with one with the little ear that takes the 1/2 ratchet end.

    Instead of investing in a single purpose serpentine belt tool I suggest using a pipe wrench. Just grab the smaller end with the square hole and pull down. It worked great for me and can also be used for self defense.

    Thanks man, I was ready to throw a match in the gas tank.Changing the water pump and the videos say I have a drop the front motor mount but I don't think I will have to so far the tension pulley has been the worst part.Never would have figured it out like you did so thanks much

    Dude, major thanks for the tip to jam a bolt in the tensioner to get the necessary leverage.HF.

    Thank you! I ended up pulling the whole tensioner out and sticking a 3/8-1/2" adapter instead of a bolt in the 1/2" spot on the tensioner. The dumbest design out of many dodge designs! Anyway, thank you for the inspiration!

    The stock tensioner on those vehicles does not have the tab at the rear. I picked up a serpentine tensioner tool for $25 that makes the job very easy, and I should never have any problems with any vehicles in the future either. Very useful tool. Worth the investment!

  • @Mysimple_truth

    Smart man an thanks for the tip because i just done control arm bushings replaced my alternator an was thinking about how to get my belt back on without renting the tool even though we get our money back its a 30 min drive to get it an then 30 to return it. It is a pretty stupid design but not really if it achieves the purpose of what it was made for which was getting people to take it to the dealership or another shop.

    Auto part places sell a serpentine belt tool for all cars. For dodges its a flat bar with a 1/2 inch lug on the end of it. It also comes with sockets for other cars. Cost about 20.00 bucks

  • @aaronmurphy5060
    @aaronmurphy5060 Год назад

    Man, sooo easy to do a lil bit different. Every time my car hits water I have to put the belt back on. So put a 15mm wrench on the tensioner pulley bolt, and tighten it till the thing rocks outta the way. Slip the belt off the idler pulley a few inches closer to ya.
    For putting the belt back on, have it tight over everything except the idler pulley. Leave the slack beside the idler. Throw your wrench on the tensioner pulley and tighten like I said, slip the bald side of serpentine belt up onto the idler. No fuss.

    Ever heard of a bad tensioner pulley causing your exhaust on a dodge caravan to vibrate rattle noise? A muffler shop put one muffler on then exhaust rattled they thought it was baffle in muffler so put a 2nd muffler on still rattle and then they hit the muffler with the hammer a few times the 3rd time said they don't think its the muffler it may be something else but they didn't know what and sent me on my way with the rattle in my exhaust its like when you turn on the car and back out of the parking spot don't hear it when driving only low RPM when like rev the engine in parking spot or when caravan runs parked. They said they checked all the heat shields and non were loose. I read on some forum that someone had a dodge intrepid with bad tensioner pulley and there exhaust rattle and when they replace it then it went away, not sure how that possible but I'm thinking its cheap to replace the pulley can't hurt. It's almost winter though and the tensioner pully tool at advance auto hits the ground when you take the belt off so i'd need find better tool.

    Had you used a proper belt tensioner tool, it would have been easy. You can get a cheap one for under $20 or the nice Gear Wrench one for about $60, it is the same one that they sell on the tool trucks.

    3:38 Stupid design? Perhaps the engineers at Dodge designed a tool for this application.

    • @angusandleigh
      @angusandleigh 10 лет назад

      ...it's not a Dodge design issue...there are lots of modern FWD vehicles that have this very same problem...if he was any sort of mechanic he would have known this...AND he would have had a sepantine belt removal tool...and had that tensioner out in about 10 minutes...they are an inexpensive tool...and can be picked up about anywhere...hell PA has them for under $30 to go along with the other Chinese parts he buys...good mechanics don't butch about a design they can't change...they buy the proper tools for the job...

    • @freebird1ification
      @freebird1ification 10 лет назад

      angusandleigh yep you should work on the new volks waggons you need a whole new toobox full of sheeet and most you have to get from snapon or folks like that -- bunch of bull sheet if you ask me ---especially when a regulet torx would work just as well

    • @angusandleigh
      @angusandleigh 10 лет назад

      Back when I was working on cars (now industrial) I worked on a few Jettas that quickly turned me off VW...but I picked up the tools for them and they weren't too bad after...lol that's why I used to have a big rolling box set...a good part if it was for specialty tools...

    • @roscoeames3051
      @roscoeames3051 10 лет назад

      freebird1ification Cal Van has most if not all tension tools

    • @angusandleigh
      @angusandleigh 10 лет назад

      ...I didn't say one has to spend more and buy a ton of tools...in profession, time is money...I can't be working all day on a 20 minute job...that is why I always bought the tools for certain jobs...they eventually pay for themselves when you can do more jobs in a day...so it all balances out...and makes you more money in the long run...so I don't see the problem with having the tools to do the jobs right...not to mention avoiding breaking other things while trying to wrench out something incorrectly...and besides in this circumstance, the tool is less than $30...pays for itself in one job...

      "sarcastic" or anything like that when you ask that question over and over and over.

    • @planetjr3832
