Playlist ▶ • GERMAN HISTORY ARCHIVE
The Western Campaign of the German Wehrmacht in World War II, also called the French Campaign with reference to the main objective, is the successful offensive from May 10 to June 25, 1940 against the four neighboring countries to the west. Part of the offensive is known as the invasion of the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg. Often referred to as the "Blitzkrieg," the campaign resulted in the defeat and occupation of the previously neutral Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg (Fall Gelb) and France (Fall Rot) within a few weeks. The final point was the Compiègne Armistice with France of June 22, which came into force three days later. Unexpectedly, the operational success of the Panzer and Luftwaffe forces led to a war of movement that marked a turning point in the history of the war by a rapid course. The war against Great Britain could now continue directly from the coast of the English Channel with the Battle of Britain by air and in naval warfare (Battle of the Atlantic). Two days after the German attack on Poland on September 1, 1939, France and the United Kingdom declared war on the German Reich; however, no serious offensive to relieve the Poles, who were under heavy pressure, took place either on the ground or in the air. France confined itself to an advance to within a few miles of the West Wall ("Saar Offensive"), and British Expeditionary Force (BEF) troops began to move into northern France. Attacks on targets in Germany planned by the Royal Air Force (RAF) were prohibited by the French, with reference to possible counterattacks. Following the military defeat of Poland, French Commander-in-Chief Maurice Gamelin took his troops back to the Maginot Line by mid-October 1939. The following months were referred to as the period of the Sitzkrieg (French: la drôle de guerre; English: Phoney War), as activity on both sides was limited to reconnaissance.

Perhaps it is not appropriate to say it here, but this was probably the highest point that Germany has reached in her entire History. After the tragedy of the Great War, the trauma and humiliation of Versailles, the decades of poverty, chaos, inflation, hopelessness and unemployment, Germany arrived at this glorious moment, where she had overcome every obstacle, defeated every enemy, standing tall and proud as the whole world watched in astonishment.
If only the war had ended then!
It is truly moving to see the entire German Volk, young and old, rich and poor, countrymen and city-dwellers, united by love to the nation and gratitude to its Leader. At the same time, it is sobering to think that over the next five years this same people would be subjected to brutal and unprecedented punishments at the hands of its enemies, with its beautiful cities destroyed, its proud Army vanquished, and its women defiled by hordes of merciless conquerors.
The history of the Third Reich seems to have been written by the gods themselves; it is more powerful than any Greek tragedy. To arrive at this moment of triumph and then lose it all is the greatest tragedy that I can imagine.

I kind of disagree. It seems a bit tribal to define a nations highpoint based on its successful war efforts. As a history nerd, I get where you are coming from. It is hard not to feel that way about ancient Rome as well. However, we have to remember that real people died as a result of this conflict. if you compare this period with the prosperous period following the fall of the DDR I can't help but feel that these past 30 Years truly have been closer to a high point in German history. If we look at the West as a whole since the end of WW2 we have enjoyed a massive increase in our wealth and no significant military conflict between our nations this is incredibly rare historically speaking. In a lot of ways, the rhetoric in the Media may not reflect this fact but these last 80 Years truly have Been somewhat of a "Pax Romana". The party may be ending now as we are being outcompeted by the nations in the east, but it was a good run while it lasted. Despite All the threats we are facing, it is important to remember that never before in history has it Been possible for the average working-class family to achieve the current expected living standards and at the same time enjoy this amount of individual freedom!

    • @S.Hunter279
      @S.Hunter279 2 года назад +6

@@SkeeNnN I appreciate the respectful tone of your answer, but I would not rate the post-reunification period as the highest point in German history, although it is one of several good moments. Knowing a little of German History (with an emphasis in WWII) I'd rate its highest points as follows:
      1) Victory over France in 1940.
      2) Proclamation of the German Reich in 1871.
      3) Victory in the battle of the Teutoburg Forest.
      4) Post-war economic miracle.
      5) The reunification of Germany.
In my opinion, the last 14 years have not been especially good for Germany, in spite of peace and economic growth. This has to do mostly with decisions taken by former Chancellor Merkel.
To begin with, I seriously doubt that living standards are as high as people think they are, mainly because most Germans don't own the houses they live in. Besides, they pay a lot of taxes. On the positive side, university education is free, but the "social market economy" that Germany is supposed to be is not social enough. There is no upward social mobility and people are forced by the State to accept mini-jobs that pay miserable wages or risk losing their unemployment benefits.
There is an observable trend of urban decay, especially in Berlin. There is widespread opposition to former Chancellor Merkel's immigration policies, which will have long-term implications, especially when it comes to the threat of terrorism. And the nation is seen as weak in the international stage since military service was abolished and the Bundeswehr began to be neglected. This last point represents a great irony, because now that the storm-clouds of war are gathering again over Europe, Germany has nothing to fight with, and in the end, this may well be what saves her or dooms her.

@@gotthelfschwab1272 Apart from the power of the images, knowing the whole story helps people like me form an original perspective on German History which is closer to real events than the fables kids are taught at school and college. History should be impartial, not a one-sided account which presents one group of countries as knights in shining armor and other group as villains led by a madman.
What was done to Germany after WWI and the interwar years had to provoke a strong reaction, and when the unfair world-order created by Versailles was destroyed by a mighty German blow, the other world powers joined hands in an unholy effort to restore the status quo.

However, the problem here is that everyone praised Hitler's return and thought to themselves, "Ok, great we won. NO MORE WARS. Now we have our boys back and we are getting out of a depression, employment is on the rise, it feels good to be a German living in the Fatherland. Let's all focus on making Germany better than ever." Little did they know, their war mongering Führer was saying under his breath, "Oh, I've just begun.."

I don’t really understand how anyone can think an invasion of a sovereign country which involved hundreds of thousands dead and inevitably led to the biggest monstrosities humanity has ever faced later in the war is somehow praiseworthy. It just blows my mind. Even with the history shared by both countries and the Treaty of Versailles being unfair to the Germans. I just don’t find indiscriminate violence towards independent countries and peoples a thing to be proud about. No one who appeciated their lives and basic freedoms really did. And that’s the reason that little Führer ultimately fell and had to put a bullet through his brain in an underground bunker. Greetings from Spain.

Die britische Armee wurde geschlagen und hat das Festland Europas verlassen. Fatal mistakes made by the Germans in World War II =
1- Let the British army withdraw from Dunkirk
2- High appreciation for the Italians, who lacked heavy industries such as tanks, which made the British sweep them away in days in the desert.
3- Allowing the German armies to drain in the eastern campaign instead of providing tanks, especially tank engines, and this led to a rapid drain, especially for tank divisions.
4- Not providing winter clothing after the delay in the campaign against Moscow
5- Preventing the emergence of new types despite the existence of planning for tanks capable of adapting to the eastern climate, which is the main reason for the failure of the campaign against Moscow in Operation Typhoon.
6- The attack on Stalingrad and the depletion of the infantry divisions there
7- Hitler's decisions were wrong in letting the German armies drain and finally surrender in North Africa, Stalingrad, and then in Ukraine and Sevastopol, and the loss of mobility that the Germans used to in history because the Germans were throughout history loving the conditions of kinetic war.
8 - Neglecting the development of corn in a timely manner and neglecting the development of good types of aircraft and research on gasoline
