🚨This story is about what we know so far in the sinking of HMNZS Manawanui. Since the focus of the comments seem to be on the ship's captain, here is her background.
Commander Yvonne Gray joined the Royal Navy in 1993 and sailed in frigates and minehunters. She transferred to the Royal New Zealand Navy in 2012 and Manawanui is her first command.🚨
Also, no comments on my excellent Maori?
And her last command, as well
@@PatRiarchy-qw6cp That is true.
You tried at least.
Awesome work . Greetings from McMurdo Station Antarctica 😊
This is almost as bad as Sweden losing one of its New VISBY Class Frigates a couple of years ago .
They found the reef!
Now it is a reef.
Correction - They re-discovered a "well-charted reef", according to Sal.
Sonar contact! Brace for impact! Well, obviously the reef was at fault
Probably smoking the reef too.
The New Zealand navy lose a surface vessel and gain a submarine.
That can't surface.🤣
Hydrographic survey. Using the touch system.
hahahaha
Yup, we found bottom captain! 😅
percussive surveying
Bumper failure
NZ does everything by braille
USN had same affliction years ago, multiple ships came down with Runagrounditis
I thought the US Navy's problem was running into things. Cargo ships, etc.
But were those crews up to date in their diversity training?
@@andrewtaylor940 The US Navy has about 470 ships. NZ Navy has like 5 tug boats, a cruiser and a destroyer.
If the usn ship was an LCS it wouldn't have hit the reef.
It wouldn't have got there without breaking down or falling apart before it got any where near grounding.
So it have been worse.😮
Which led to a rash of never commanding agains.
That part of the world if famous for those sneaky reefs. In fact there's so many that you even have to look at the map sometimes!
DEI Captain
Chart
Maps are racist and sexist
True. I was on a ship that tried to shortcut through some known reefs and bumped one of those sneaky reefs and bent a propshaft. The propshaft was 9 inches OD.
I wonder how the charts happen
Incompetence for a force that is exiting its business.
Everyone said I was daft to build a ship on a swamp, but I built in all the same, just to show them. It sank into the swamp. So I built a second one. That sank into the swamp. So I built a third. That burned down, fell over, then sank into the swamp. But the fourth one stayed up. And that's what you're going to get, Lad, the strongest ship in all of New Zealand.
Someone shouted out " who put that bloody reef there"
Local Samoan: "You cant park there mate!"
Sad. No military related sailor ever wants to see a friendly nation's Naval ship in trouble. Especially, New Zeeland since some of us shared service together with New Zeeland's sailors years ago. USS Canberra CAG-2, USS Dahlgren DLG-12, and USS Jouett CG-29.
The captain was a DEI first lesbian captain and only had 8 years in the navy. She was a school teacher before.
@jerryodell1168 look at the bright side, excuse to buy a new one!!!
No Merchant Mariner ever wants to see that either.
Good video. Just one point, HMNZS Aotearoa is the largest ship in the fleet
My apologies. And Canterbury is a bit larger by tonnage.
@@wgowshipping"HMNZS Aotearoa is significantly larger and designed for logistical support and Antarctic operations, while the HMNZS Canterbury is focused on amphibious and sealift capabilities"
I want to know if they're going to sue the captain for damage to the reef like they'd do to any civilian captain.
Why the captain, rather than the crew member monitoring the depth gauge.
@@michaeldowson6988 It's always the Captain's fault. It comes with the hat.
@@michaeldowson6988 Oh boy, there always has to be an apologist for a failed system .

@@Mishn0 Then why do they waste money on investigative enquiries?
"Grounded, caught fire, keeled over, then sank beneath the water." None of this 'captain goes down with the ship' out of sheer embarrassment stuff.
"Grounded, caught fire, keeled over, then sank beneath the water."
In the old days that's what would have happened to a captain's career after an incident like this. But now..?
Unfortunately she’s a lesbian who often mentions her husband and her pronouns 😢😢😢
@@USMCArchAngel03- she was a dei hire and was put in command with only 8 years in the navy
When the most notable event of your career sounds like a Monty Python skit, you know you're in trouble.
DEI in action
The ship was surveying reefs - it definitely located a reef
Survey reef...check.
As usual excellent reporting. Tough situation for that vessel. We often overlook the need for surveying our oceans and waterways.
So funny, so ironic.
Seems negligent being close to a well known reef. That’s a lot of valuable equipment lost.
Not to mention the HORRIBLE damage to that economy system.
It's a blow for tourism for Samoans
I see a promotion in the Captain's future. It is New Zealand after all.
Stop defending the captain guys. You're in command because you're supposed to know better, and this is an embarrassing way to lose your ship.
It’s not her fault! She’s just a woman! There was lots of switches and buttons 😂
That has yet to be determined. If the ship lost power it may not be her fault. There may be other factors as well.
Let's wait for the investigative report to be at least semi-finalized before jumping to conclusions.
A bit unfortunate that the incumbent MINDEF, Judith Collins, has been in the job for a year and is still struggling with the acronyms (or was poorly briefed).
Glad though that our mates "across the ditch" are OK.
She can't even brush her hair before a TV interview...... Jeeeez
She's the most qualified, never mind knowing nothing about these matters.
Nobody on the bridge could read a chart? Even a Third Class Quartermaster can read a chart. They were the dumbist guys in the Coast Guard so it would make the CO's look better.
Thanks for the video and hello from New Zealand 🇳🇿.
I'll be heading that way soon ..... in like a few hours 😂
Good report. Wind and sea conditions were appreciated.
Another major lack of judgment by incompetent officers.
Boy, that escalated really fast.
Captain, hated by the crew as she made them peel all the stickers off the doors traditionally donated by navel ports they have visited. But never mind, a good box ticking exercise, and applicable to the navigator too......
Is this true? Either way I’m sure they mysteriously all went to bed when any alarms went off and weren’t available.
@@hoopslaa5235 I believe it is true, the info came from an ex-uk RN officer.
Who can say, "diversity hire?"
@louisvillaescusa a captain? Highly unlikely.
Outstanding as always. BZ
Here in NZ it is now being reported that Manawanui was trialing biofuel...
Potential cause of the loss of power? If the engines weren't properly outfitted for it. That might make sense.
That wouldn't affect the anchor.
Imagine being so bad at your job that you run aground on a ship full of sensors for mapping the sea bed.
😅😅
Do you know who was in command?
How do you assess who/what is “so bad?”
Do you understand anything about seamanship?
Publish the facts that led you to this “guess” as to how it happened!
@@HowardDrysdale- you may want to engage brain while reading comments. pretty obvious what he said
@HowardDrysdale The Captains prior career history seems to be the leading issue. But regardless of the seemingly obvious diversity hire, the ships function at the moment was mapping the sea bed which leads to the hilarous irony of a burning fire truck. It doesn't matter if it actually wasn't this captains fault the buck stops with her full stop.
Proper Navigation is critical. Not doing so is deadly.
New Zealand and Australia have been neutered.
There is a certain irony there.
Is it the part about the “Commander” being in the kitchen when this happened. I thought it was hugely ironic.
@@gtdcov😂
So a vessel that constitutes half the tonnage of the entire New Zealand navy is operating near reefs, some of them uncharted, and yet it runs aground. That is hard to explain.
-In the days of wooden sailing ships, someone would be at the bow of the ship throwing a line to measure the depth. Today they have depth gauges that work even better. And given the risky circumstances, why wasn't a small boat going ahead of this ship and radioing back the depth? There seems to be an incredible lack of foresight here.
rubbish Aotearoa is 26,000 tonnes, Canturbery 9000 tonnes, and each frigate about 3000 tonnes each
The ships mission was literally charting the reefs. She was equipped with all the best sensors to see and map the reefs. So it's not like she was operating blind.
Thank you Sal
first rule of navigation. don't drive the ship where the birds are walking
Is that like the aviation rule.
Don’t fly into clouds containing mountain goats! 😳😂
our shame is complete.......sadly not surprised......this country is so far gone.....
Used to think NZ would be the last country standing.
You’re NZer? Seppo here. Can you tell me more what you mean of why your country to far gone? I’m San Diego32yrs . For reference but born and raised NJ 19yrs . I’m 51. Worked for airlines and been around the world a couple times compared to the average dummy American. So don’t stereos type me that bad! Ha. Brazil South Africa and NZ are a couple of the rare cool countries I have not been to. I have done the whole AUs tho! Took a land train bus from Sydney to Perth, suffered south coast all the way back to Sydney with my Perth mate . Been up thru Cooly and Brisbane twice. So I’ve come close to experiencing your cultures but I know you contend you’re different than Aussies like an Irish to a Scottish haha.
But please tell us more of what you mean mate!
NZ is an utter disaster. It’s - sadly - on my list of places never to go.
Shit happens don't stress over it. However, if the captain was promoted due to factors that didn't have to do with experience, then that would be a HUGE embarrassment.
It's not just NZ, mate.
How could hydrographic survey ship hit a well-charted reef in calm weather, catch on fire and then sink? Fortunatly all Royal New Zealand navy personnell were rescued and safe !!!
They are not telling the true story
Thanks Sal
That's a hell of a way to do a Hydro graphic survey. 🤣 Everybody gets a medal 🤨
That's a lot of rust on a Navy ship.
Exactly
Trophy’s to medals

Unfortunately, it matches far too many USN ships.

thank you for the coverage we are a very small country
From the faces of the crew on the beach - somebody fucked up big time.
Thanks for your common sense report and kind words and support for our navy. The investigation report will be released in 2 months so until then our navy will have to listen to a fair bit of bullshit and undoubtedly punch above their weight in more than the few pub brawls this incident will ignite. Cheers.
Don't put a lesbian DEI with only 8 years in the navy.
If her quick thinking and wit helped her to make the decision to evacuate the ship, why didn't it help her to prevent it from running around?
Thanks for the information.
From gCaptain:
“With the RNZN’s only salvage ship now in need of salvage itself, one could say the ship has truly embraced its role-perhaps too literally.”
Thanks bro much respect NZ
Sorry but that has to be embarrassing to lose a ship like that 💙🙏🏽🙏🏽
How does a hydrographic survey ship run aground?
Extremely precisely?
Sneaky reefs snuck up on the ship.

This ship has 4 independent engines with an 11,000 bhp total power output, the navy are trying to say that there was a complete loss of power in all 4 engines 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
The power failure could have been in the control system.
@@wgowshipping specifically the one directly under the captains hat?
Many modern ships are diesel electric, with podded electric engine propeller units or inboard electric motors able to be driven from any engine generator.
If a fault takes the bus down…
It’s not the number of generators that matters if the grid itself fails. Almost all ships are designed with two independent grids for reliability, one of which is an “Emergency” grid. But electrical systems are fiendishly difficult to maintain and program. Pulling a ship out of service to test every possible scenario can take days or even weeks and it’s typically beyond the abilities of the mariners themselves.
Any time something goes wrong, then blame the ship! Back in the old days the old man was responsible for everything, but now the woman is not responsible for anything. It's 2024 after all.
The US navy's way ahead of the New Zealanders. We can lose a ship without it even getting underway.
This tends to happen when the bridge talks to the engine room with two coconuts with a string in between….
Ran aground because the ship lost power? Whatever happened to having all systems online when near things that look like dirt? At a minimum, you would have thought they had heard SOMETHING about the MV Dali collision in Baltimore.
Solid effort on the Reo Maori pronunciation Sal - we appreciate it!
The most amazing thing about this event has been the number of guys who loudly tell us all how much love Jesus and who have names like Chad and Todd coming from places like North Carolina with zero connection with NZ appear convinced the captain is to blame because she is a female and gay.
No, she's to blame because she is incompetent...
The Captain is always responsible for saving her own life and the lives of the crew, fantastic naval tradition.
Uh no. A good captain doesn’t put their ship in that dangerous position
The captain / commander is always responsible.
The same goes for a skipper. I like this challenge, for example when I ferry people across the river. I am responsible for their safety and the safety of other traffic.
Word on the street was the captain is a dei hire and 4 years experience on a 150 million dollar ship is crazy.
Yep and an ex elementary teacher and want to be restaurant owner becomes a line officer and given a first command after two years. Go figure Oh add, first lebos captain.

Very sad and how could this happen ? at least no one was seriously injured
New Zealand back in the News again ,are qe now famous?

One must ask how ships with so much technology on board end up making contact with land , reef's,etc .
Guess we can't trust the surveys anymore. Do it over.
Good video, thanks for the details 👍
Diversity is Your Strength & also Sinks Ships.
One Correction at 5 min 12 seconds. King Charles's visit hasn't happened yet, it is happening later this month. Samoa is hosting the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting, CHOGM from 21-26 October 2024. I believe it will be first one he has attended since he became King. I have heard a radio report saying the Manawanui was surveying directly offshore from the hotel where is supposed to be staying.
How do you know your Navy is really small? Include two RIBs as part of the fleet order of battle. New Zealand doesn't lack money for the Navy. The woke politicians endemic to that county won't give any money for defence.
We used to have an army with tanks and an airforce with fighter jets. Unfortunately woke politicians have put paid to all that.
They've already named the replacement vessel: _Ganawananuwon_
That’s hilarious, well played, well played.
I hereby venture the speculation that people are WAY too used to blindly relying on electronic navigation.
Failure to do basic visual navigation in restricted waters is probably going to be part of the problem.
Former QMOW/navigator watchstander.... USCG.... back in he 1970s.
Served on a 210', we calibrated the Loran C system with visual nav... such as three arm protractors and horizontal sextant angles. Super accurate.
Watching people stare at screens and do zero visual double-checking is mind-boggling level of trust in a single system when near to shore.
Or so it seem to me.
Or the command crew was incompetent.
Very sad and unfortunately probably going to be embarrassing for the Royal New Zealand Navy once the investigation is completed.

I was part of an international military exercise that was taking place in the Pacific. One of the bays we wanted to use hadn’t been surveyed so we were trying to see if the Navy Mobile Construction Battalion could do that prior to the exercise. Got told there was a ton of diplomacy that had to happen before one country could conduct a survey in another countries waters. I agree the survey work was probably just a cover story for supporting the monarchs visit.

I worked on RAINIER and FAIRWEATHER. both vessels 50 years old and slated to be replaced (i believe those are under construction). The survey launches are 29' aluminum prop driven with Cummins diesels. Full suite of electronics and even a head. Very capable boats. They go out a full 8 to 10 hour day because 50 gallons of diesel lasts when surveying.
One of my YT videos is on RAINIER as we depart San Francisco.
Before this incident there was another one involving an all female US NAVY flight crew who crashed a P-8 "Poseidon" out of Hawaii.
Therefore almost ALL OUTER ACCIDENTS had an all male crew.
