  • Will Smith made history by becoming the 5th Black man to win the best actor award at the Academy Awards.
Smith was nominated for his role as Richard Williams in the Critically Acclaimed film' King Richard.'
However, before the actor won the award, Smith walked on stage and slapped comedian Chris Rock for making a joke about Smith's wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, and her bald head.
During his acceptance speech for his first-ever oscar, Smith apologized for his actions to everyone but the person he slapped.
Jada Pinkett Smith revealed in 2018 that she was diagnosed with alopecia. She has often discussed hair loss challenges on Instagram and other social media platforms.
On Monday, Roland Martin spoke with Dr. Jeffrey R. Gardere, a Board Certified Clinical Psychologist, and Robin May, a Licensed Professional Counselor about the smack heard and seen around the world.

Jada was not attacked. Will has had a bruised ego for 3 years, crying at the red table and taking shit from Jada to his face about how August (her son's friend mind you) had her pretzel'd up in Will's house), saying in his book that he used to cry after busting a 🥜, his awkward kids especially his seemingly confused son. This was not about Chris Rock or Will defending his family, this was Will's chance to reclaim his ego and balls that Jada has snatched. His anger is misdirected. What about rock's kids and family that had to witness that shit. I will always defend my sistas, but Jada is the toxic one and she is singlehandedly bringing down one of our black heroes. Can we call a spade a spade for once damn!!

    • @jlfrench3667
      @jlfrench3667 2 года назад +17

If you don’t see disrespect look again. The jab was personally attacking her appearance rather he knew about the condition or not, and that is a no no. People like you don’t get it until it happens to you. He should have kept the comedy general… not saying a very misogynistic insult disguised as a joke about her bald head. That’s horrible. And very tacky. Especially because it’s an illness. So since he didn’t know WHY she was bald, don’t mention anything about it at all. He kept all the other jokes general and about the actors roles. Jada Pickett is not Demi Moore. He was wrong for that. Hence the slap. In addition to all else the Smiths have had to deal with in terms of scrutiny over the years and not once “clapped back”. Will simply snapped.

Hats off to you, Roland! I enjoyed this convo. 🔥 I’m a black woman and I’m not offended. Protecting your family can be done while also protecting your brand. Jada has embraced her condition and openly seems confident in her skin, so I was taken back by the eye roll. Also, Chris prefaced the joke with “I love you”, and he didn’t compare her to E.T., Mr. Clean or anything unsightly. He said GI Jane, a fierce, brave and badass character who looks equally attractive without hair. Most young people didn’t even get it, but they sided with Will because it’s Will Smith. His own son tweeted “this is how we do”. That’s disheartening.

Roland, thanks for keeping it real. I wish two of the black female professionals on this show could use their platform to understand, support and teach that black women are not defined by their hair. For them to be DEEPLY offended by Chris Rock's comments suggest that black women are inherently so insecure or value their hair so much, that joke is worth FIGHTING for. We as black women regardless of hairstyle or length, have come too far to turn allow our minds to be subjected to feeling insulted, hurt, ruined by something so trite as a joke. Our fight is much greater than hair. There are truly worse things in life... and hair and ain't of them.

Mr. Smith just won an Oscar for playing a man that endured more than any of us will ever know to get his daughters to play tennis. The Williams sisters and Mr. Williams fought racism, bigotry, discrimination, games and anything else you want to add in to play a game, a sport they love.
There is no one here who can tell me that Mr. Williams did not want to beat down some of these people that were standing in the way of his dreams or the dreams of his daughters. Yet this man, this Black man, with two Black daughters, worked tirelessly in a mostly (nearly entirely) White sport and climate, by using strength of character and fortitude to help propel his daughters to become the Superstars they are. And ultimately they found success and have become icons!!! Enough such that a movie was made about their lives.
Mr. Williams did not resort to hitting people, he stayed strong, showed and exhibited pride, dignity, and power to his daughters and children, and that is why they became who they are. Mr. Williams navigated the minefields and knew every step that he took was not only watched by outsiders, but by his family. Mr. Smith just won an Oscar portraying this man, but it seems as if he learned little.
I just wanted to say that.

That is because Will Smith is the only one that can't see that Jada don't even care about him. Only thing she care about is herself and if she hurting he better be hurting too, Will Smith is a true and live beta male. Because how in the hell you going to defend someone who has already put your sexual relations out in public and then went and had an affair with her son's friend. Will Smith is being manipulated and overpowered by Jaden Smith. Why would this woman even try to stop him when she don't even have feelings for him she don't care about what happens to him or what happens to his career. And this man is willing to throw his whole career way over a Jezebel spirit. Damn this grown ass man started crying like he's some kind of little bitty kid. This is the main reason why I don't even believe in none of that psychology stuff because these people want you to believe in watching what you say to people when it's your job to tell jokes. And then this man didn't even go into no kind of deep down exposure of the joke, just a plain as movie joke let's keep it moving.

GI Jane was a badass woman and Demi Moore rocked that cut and movie. I personally thought Jada would've been a great GI Jane if she was casted, with her work ethic, she would've nailed the role. I thought it was a compliment.

Not only does Rock have Black daughters, he produced a Documentary on Black Women and Hair: titled "GOOD HAIR". Rock has a MORE than healthy understanding of "hair significance" to Black Women. Julianne Malveaux is correct, as is her fellow Panel participant: Avis. The whole scenario was 'ugly and unnecessary'. Avis is also accurate in responding to all the "ENTANGLEMENT" toxic duplicity. On all levels Rock's "joke" was a completely unnecessary, unprincipled and a unfunny 'personal' remark. Rock was not on his game and Smith's balance askew.

Couples generally try to caution one another when they see things getting heated in the hope's of calming the other spouse down. Jada did nothing. Well, to make a long story short, Will embarrassed himself, Chris, the Academy as well as the producers of the show. I like both Brothers and I hope they can work things out. None of us are perfect. Also, some real men did step in, and calmed the situation down. You can't solve problems by putting your hands on someone. Real men teach this to their children. They teach them to think. I hope you're passing it on, because it benefits the "family". I also sensed this goes beyond a joke from Chris Rock. There are no sides to take in this situation. Right is right and wrong is wrong. Lately he's been acting as if he's bugger than life, he has issues, deep seated issues that have affected and he directed his anger to the wrong person, his wife slept with her child's friend and others then boasted on TV about it and all he did was smiled talking about open marriage...that had to have affected him and he's desperately trying to cover his shame...what a predicament.

Will did a bald joke many moons ago, how did that slap across his face feel to him! Oh!!! That’s right Will didn’t get slapped for that particular joke. I say all of that because, If Will isn’t offended by his wife infidelities or he himself putting his personal life out there for public consumption then I find it hard to believe that this is what set him off. If you’re not going to slap the teenager that’s humping your wife then for crying out loud why would you slap Chris.! The joke may have been distasteful but it wasn’t assault worthy. Will and Jade have said worst things about each other. And for those whose out there talking about protect Black women!! Ask yourself this !!! are we being protected against the things Rappers say about us / Black women Everyday. Keep that same energy when the Da Baby and the Lil Wayne’s of the world be talking that ish about black women and not a one black woman want to Cancel them. When they all should get the the same punishment. Black women if you’re not offended by everybody being disrespectful then you can’t be mad at anyone.

He was wrong and should never be invited back. People cannot arbitrarily get up and pimp slap someone because you didn't like what they said. Wrong time and place. You walk on stage. You smack someone at a live event. You go to your seat. Shout obscenities. You STILL get an award. You give "teary" speech and don't apologize to the person you assaulted. And there's still no consequences? Instead you still get a standing ovation.
I think that says a lot about it says a lot about us as a society and how messed up Hollywood is. That if you make a good enough album or movie, we are willing to suspend reality and not do anything about what you (celebrities, politicians, preachers etc.) do because of how your talent or product of your talent makes us feel.
No one is above a joke, especially not a mild one. Jokes humanize us.
