This is the simplest and most informative set of videos I've seen in a while, I've just bought my first kit and this has been the most helpful thing I've seen
7:33 the way the camera brightens the guitar and the color on it is so satisfying
Dude Thank you, I was thinking about making a diy kit myself but I didnt know how to do the finish. I have looked on so many sites, and have watched so many videos on RUclips. But they skipped so many parts, or didnt show the results. Now i finally know how to do it. Great video!!! You’ve helped a lot!
Really appreciate this video. Just did all this to my kit and it was super easy and I am super stoked with the results.
Nice job man. I wasn't sure how good that was going to turn out but it looks really great thanks for sharing your techniques with us
That's an interesting choice of dyes sir. I like the way that it turned out; well done.

Jesus Christ is the way truth and life,
Thank you so much for posting these videos! I NEVER knew they made guitar kits. Your ink idea is fantastic!!! Im watching all of your videos in order and so far its looking great! Thanks for sharing, I cant wait to try this myself! thankyouthankyouthankyou!
Yup I just used regular ink mixed with water. I have to say, it turned out great. I am editing the next video and will definitely upload it by the end of the week.
I'm really diggin the dark grain of the Spalted Maple top. It really gives it a 3d effect with the translucent blue. I already applied the oil finish and I am hoping to upload the next video this weekend.
I tried the ink for a custom tele I made, and after a few years the light seriously faded it.
Has yours suffered from fading?
1. I built a kit several years back
2. it will raise the grain, so you need to allow it to dry before applying final finish
Gorgeous. Texture is lovely
I have links to where I bought it on my website. Link to my site is in the description.
Man it's a spalted maple top, as you said, and as I can see, but it's real awesome that it has so much of a flamed look to it. You can see it a good bit without the stain, but after the stain was finished it really popped. Great vids, thanks for doing all this man, you're great!
Fred, I am amazed. I am watching this because I want a unique look for my classic truck’s bed wood. This is beautiful work.

Awesome job. On the back of the guitar you could use a nice minwax wood stain, and then a tru-oil finish.
Thank you very much! I will have more videos out soon.
That guitar is absolutely gorgeous. Good job!
Thanks, man, I never would have thought of using toner ink but the result was great! Next build I'm using this technique.
Nicely done...I've been wanting to buy one and now it seems that I can do this without wasting my dough...thanks.
The next video will be about applying the oil finish to protect the stain. I definitely will do a sound test video once the project is all complete
This is a great video! Thanks for sharing. Great job on the stain. I did a purple quilt top strat a while back if you want to see it on my channel. The ink is a great idea, and others use leather dye and even "Rit" brand cloth dye. Gloves are a must. I also just finished staining a plain maple top/mahog. back PRS style guitar. It came out close in color to yours, but without the flame. I actually mixed green and blue. Again, great job!
I watched this before but i stumbled & watch again because that blue so beautiful. Great work man!.

This is so relaxing
This is a very informative video. Thanks so much for trying something new and teaching us something.
Kevin
Pretty good Fred, I like what you've done. Subbed and belled.
I'm pretty impressed with the sound
this vid taught me alot about guitar painting... thanks man
Bought a LP style kit like yours, great to see how you are staining it,I notice that the binding does Not get stained! I was worrying about staining the binding but looks like I don't have to. Cheers for the vid!
Absolutely brilliant!!!!
Wonderful!!! Nice job!!!
that blue looks amazing, good job
Totally agree.

Jesus Christ is the way truth and life,
What I do to keep the dye from bleeding into binding/ faux binding is to tape around the binding and use a paint brush to put a coat of sanding sealer over the binding area. It keeps the dye from bleeding and if it does, it's easy to scrape off with a razor blade.
just something about you colouring in a guitar, is sooooo entertaining
First of all - Thanks for the very detailed videos. I have not seen anyone use ink (most use either Stewmac ColorTone, TransFast, or ColorFX dyes/stains), but it worked great! I also really liked your idea of using the dark brown for the back. Definitely something I will remember when I get an LP-style kit.
I have been looking at tons of staining videos because I just purchased a kit for a 1966 Fender XII. I have been eying a 12-string electric for years but just couldn't find room in the budget. After watching your video (along with many, many others), I am confident that I can make my kit look as nice as yours while preserving my current marital bliss (because if I bought any of the electric 12-strings I had been looking at I would probably have an ex-wife rather than a wife of 20 years!!! :)
Thanks again!

Dude that is amazing! I am planning on building a guitar and I might try this out! It looks 3D like wrinkled masking tape
I tried the blue dye from an office supply store. And the blue turned purple after two days. So if someone is planning on doing this process just make sure that you test the color on another piece of wood and allow it to dry for about 48 hours to see how it turns out.
Looks great! Im doing a PRS kit and also staining the top Blue. Question, do you think the black ink was necessary to get that look? I want a deep blue as well but Im just concerned about doing the black ink first and having an issue.
this very exact execution one sees rather seldom and I find your video totally super detailed installation and accurate solder joints definations work conclusion, _ very good workout!

Jesus Christ is the way truth and life,
So did you sand between EACH coat of the blue or just the black? I am going to dye my headshell and this looks awesome.
this ink will not sit on bare mahogany, right? As far as i get it, it only will go on maple top. Is that right?
Uses printer ink
GIBSON want to know your location
😂
Lol ikr
Lol what a dumb ass
Also using tin foil on the pot cover helps shield noise, you can super glue it on and trim it with a pair of scissors. I used this technique on a strat plate that was noisey as hell and it seemed to quite it down.
Great job on the guitar man! I was wondering, would blue ink work the same for the blue stain after I use the black on the grain?
Beautiful job!

Jesus Christ is the way truth and life,
hmmm, did you use the same type of ink as I did? The ink should be water-based, so mixing it with water shouldn't be an issue. Could it be older ink that is dried out a bit?
what ink did you use because i am thinking of painting my guitar and dont know what ink to use
I used a razor blade to scrape the ink of the binding. It was pretty easy to remove.
Thanks a lot! I usually prefer a natural wood color but I thought I would go wild on this and make it blue :-)
8:00 Amazing job ! It looks like wet jeans ! Thats crazy , I'm not really a fan of blue but you did a great job .
Great Videos! Thanks.
Ah good question! I'm glad you asked this because I forgot to mention it in the video. The stain did get on the top of the binding but it was very easy to remove. All you have to do is lightly scrape it off with a razor blade. It did not STAIN the binding, but more like just dried on it.
good job . If it were up to me I would just use the stain stuff cause I've had new guitars and really got pissed off with the scratched pain !! I would imagine stain painless is more forgivable . just my thoughts .
7:25 + was a huge wow-moment! Great work! Beautiful finish!
Hey I just got a guitar kit for Xmas and was wondering if I should do the dark stain to pull out the grain if I'm gonna do a faded standard or tobacco burst. Can't wait for your next video!
Abso;utr;y brilliant 'How to...' regarding the ink you used, can I use pretty much any type of water-based ink such as straight printer refill inks. I'm guessing that stamp ink is the same thing. Again, brilliant bunch of vids (I've just wached all of them)
already commented on his other video and discussed it, kick rocks kid
i know the black was just stamp ink but was the blue too? Just wondered if that was actually some specific wood staining dye...
This video is made end of 2012. I would like to ask if those printer ink have have any fading after years of use?
Congi Thu clear coat it
Yes the blue fades the quickest!
you should have sanded again on the X axis...top to bottom while playing. the color looks awesome, the black ink worked beautifully, but I can still see sanding lines
And I absolutely love the sound of your cat chasing a toy in the background.
That's nice, Im getting one of the kits, and was trying to figure out a way to make the wood pop.

Jesus Christ is the way truth and life,
Question please. Once all the colours have been applied, do you lightly sand again at the end, or move straight on to the clear oil coating. Also how do you get the oil to dry out, it seems to take a long time. Thanks in advance.
I'm going to do the same bet with a dark purple. I think it will look good
this is very very helpfull! i'm going to stain my own guitar and i am going to look at this video for the technique. The only problem is that I live in the netherlands so the products I buy will be different from yours, I hope that it works out!
Goddamn, that looks gorgeous!
Wow - I'm about to do this exact color to an old frankenstein start I have. Great job so far! Really looking fwd to trying this. So you you used ink instead of actual wood dye? Any idea when you'll have the video about the clear coating ready? ;-)
job well done sir, looks very nice pro all the way damn I may want you to re-do my eds 1275 dbl neck 12 an 6 string Gibson
In my opinion to get more of a sunburst look I would have put less concentrated ink on the more sanded area and more concentrated ink on the less sanded area
this is really cool. not sure id wanna try it tho lol. you think that would look good on a telocaster kit? just askin for some oppinions, im thinkin bout gettin a kit
So, help me here is the toner idea good or bad? Do the positives outweigh the negatives? Boo using water as the solvent first of all. Can you mix it with alcohol? As to its lifespan, will the surface change if it gets hot enough to melt the toner? is basically burnt plastic and stuff to make it stick until it's melted. There are various additives etc. It's a pretty iffy technology to sell to someone.
Hello. what color of blue did you use? I bought the "Blue Light" but the color does not suit me a lot. your color is "blue overseas"? do you attach a link to buy it?
So, would this produce the same sort of look if done with a red or green color?
3:16 i would have left it that color! that looks amazing!

Jesus Christ is the way truth and life,
how would you do a black finish??, like the les paul custom ebony?
Where did buy the blue from ? What’s the name and price of it?... how much do l have to get to apply just for the top..?
Do you need to sand beetween each coat of blue??? I mean once you staining the color and it is dry, have i to apply another coat of blue or sand and them staining?
Thank you and nice work!!!!
i looks beautiful, but what made you decide to use "ink" instead of "stain" on the top part of the guitar?
does one have to tape off the binding for the edge or what ? is it already protected by polyurethane
Great guide. By the way, can you help me with the wood stain? Which one to choose? There are A LOT of them. :(
Did you apply the stock oil directly on the ink-dyed body? Did it take much ink/color off??
Could mix dye with alcohol less grain raising and faster drying time.
So about the sanding. Which way do you sand this guitar? I'm confused as to what direction the grain goes in since it's spalted maple. I got the same kit you did and mine definitely doesn't have a flamed maple look to it like yours does. I was considering either doing a Caribbean burst or even just leaving it natural and put a lacquer coat or oil coat over it. Thank god you made a tutorial on this exact guitar, I just got it recently for my birthday :D really appreciate the videos man!
the colour looks like a PRS style guitar really nice

Jesus Christ is the way truth and life,
is the body already sealed with a sanding primer, or does it come untreated?
i used regular stamp/printer ink from any office supply store
Thanks Fred! I got myself an ink just like yours! A question - does it matters if I solve the ink on water or thinner?
The idea of watering the body creeps me lol
Cheers mate!
i'm doing this exact process thanks to your video

Jesus Christ is the way truth and life,
I really like the way that blue turned out. If I do a kit like this, I think I'd want to go for more of a "Wine Red" finish you see on a lot of les pauls. Any tips on how to acheive that look?
Did you found a good choice ?
very nice color. my favorite. I wish i build custom gibson instead of buying one.
so how would this method work for a honeyburst finish, anyone know how the colors would change??
Great videos, can you tell me if the Guitar is still playing good, you would definitely recommend the kit?
Oh yes, super awesome, thanx bud.
Im thinking about getting one of these kits myself and want to do a deep blue burst as well. My question is when you applied the stain, did it stain the binding as well? I seen in the video that you didnt tape of the top of the binding while you stained it. Did the stain not effect the binding or did you have to sand it back a little to remove any color?
beautiful colour, just wondering if it will work the same for red? :)
yeah have to agree with daniel on that one do not use a power sander for any carved tops, the same for wetsanding u cant do it cause you will burn through your clear coat
yup, regular stamp/printer ink
I want one of these but routed for P90 pick ups, could always modify the humbucker routing...?
Does the kit include instructions on how to assemble the guitar?
So awesome. I'm going to do a dresser like this...
im getting one just because of you saying how good they are im going to do a amber top but not sure what colour to use for the back
What about the binding? Do you have to do anything special to keep it from getting stain on it. It doesnt look like you have the entire binding taped off.
