Rebuilding this guitar took me about 12 months. What was supposed to be an easy project became a full on take apart and rebuild. What a total pain. This is the full rebuild, enjoy!

BigD..... just done a Honey burst on Ash. I used angelus dye, cellulose sanding sealer and a first coat of tru oil. I am having a problem with the open grain still being a bit tacky after two days? Any advice?
Wonderful restore. Much improved. A couple of question if that’s ok?
We’re you able to save the serial number?
Could you have gotten away without taking the neck off? Cheers from Australia!
Any help would be appreciated sir
Full fretboard removal and everything hey? You’re a mad man.
When I popped off the neck I almost had a heart attack.
@@bigdguitars it was a pretty loud pop.
Brad, I think Derek is sorry he didn't refinish this LP in a "outer space and planets" theme. 😊😀
@@bigdguitars my heart skipped a beat when that thing popped!👍😎🎸🎶
JJ Dillon hhahhahah.
pretty amazing restore, and even more incredible that he did it in just over 16 minutes.
It was his first one .he has it down to 12 minutes now. In the trash in 20min
@@forrestanderson7840 I was really hoping this was an r/whoooosh.. :(
I'm dead..... BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
And stealthy! SO QUIET. (AWESOME work!)
Why did this make me laugh it's such a stupid joke
Hes my dad, proud of u daddy
He’s amazing
That wood around the binding at 3:18 could very well be factory. I have seen some horrendous stuff on a few Gibson's that should have never made it out of the factory. You did an awesome job giving it a new life by the way.
I was thinking the same thing! Feel free to read the comment I just posted.
"It looks pretty dark..."
Sir...it looks PERFECT!!!
The legend of Gibson’s quality control goes on...
The Drumming Sasquatch those inlays look like it could be a counterfeit but might be just my impression from the vid...
More like ebayer dumpster dived behind Gibson factory and found a reject to sell.
Not recently....
survivor030406 they wouldn’t throw anything in a dumpster, that would go into a wood chipper if deemed unworthy and they lock their dumpster anyway
The Drumming Sasquatch not the new ones their shite
That’s one of the best looking Les Paul’s I’ve ever seen. You did a great job with it. Love the finish.
Watching videos like this is therapeutic.
It's not even my guitar but my heart started beating really hard when he popped the neck off!
I know! I kept thinking it was going to break!
Yes , I thought it was going to break !
EXACTLY!! The neck CRACK got me to go OOOOMMMMM... then when I saw the end result of separation with no damage I was like AHH yeah!!!
felt like my heart stopped when i've heard the cracking sound
It was more horrific to watch than a scene from a horror movie where the killer is sneaking up behind the main character with a knife.
I've been a Luthier since 1977 ( I was 15). I worked for 4 yrs for a guy that made Cello's and Violins, then I began my own repair business.
I just watched this video, and I'm really impressed with your work. It's nice to see a young person continuing the tradition. Best wishes!
Luthier? Nice try, Fred. I know what you REALLY are! 😂
This comment is EXACTLY like saying Plane engineer? I know, I was working in a shipyard when I was 14....
So you were 19 when you got out there ..... C'mon don't encourage the guy.
You'll probably never see this comment, but this makes me wish I had a Les Paul to send you to refinish. I love this rich walnut look. Outstanding work.
That was fascinating and awesome!
Your skills are amazing and it was very enlightening to see what was involved to give back that guitar some TLC!
All that work makes it a unique and bespoke instrument thanks to your wonderful artistry.
Thank you for posting.
I am not typically one for dark colored bursts but you knocked this one out of the park.
thanks thats the only burst that would work with this.
@@bigdguitars Sunset burst ey? :)
@@bigdguitars maybe you can try a smokehouse burst?
My thoughts exactly... fantastic refurb....
After all that work, I’d have definitely made it a gold top first
Unbelievable I dint even think that was possible to disassemble and rebuild you sir are a very talented craftsman.
Wow - I'm so impressed. Not just by your amazing skill, but also by the perseverance! 12 Months!? Sheesh! Hat's off! Fantastic results - looks amazing!
Thank you!!
Usually I find these restoration videos boring. But yours blew my mind!!!! The amount of work you conducted on that guitar was amazing . Well done!!!
Who else winced when neck cracked...
Me!!! Imagine I was doing it
Yup, reminded me of why i'm scared to go to a chiropractor
Kevin B oo oo over here! I did!
ohh yeah. I think I pooped a lil'.
My rear end definitely puckered a little bit...
I hope someone from quality control at Gibson is watching this
That... was incredible. Every time I thought you'd broken it down to base parts, you took it a step further. There was always something else to remove, and oof, Gibsons, everything is glued together XD. Watching you pop off that neck... oh god. Insane; instant sub.
Whilst you were playing at the end there, I was relieved when you said that you had reversed the wiring. I thought I was going mad hearing neck PU sounds coming out of the bridge PU. Nice video.
Art from beginning to end!!!! The Picasso of Luthiers...
thanks buddy!
No please, not a one eyed guitar!
This Vid Exploded!!! Love It D!!!
If he was the picasso he'd build his own, not refinish other people's work.
Quality content. I would have watched this in real time as a 20 part series.
In the description I put the playlist that has the longer vids.
Me too. This is without one of the best videos I’ve ever seen in 2019. Incredible work sir and really fun to watch. 👏🏽 👏🏽 👏🏽
I would’ve as well 👍
You guys are doing a very nice job of BUILDING Justin Johnson's Signature JackDaniels guitars.......I lived in Germantown TN (Shelby County) and in Gallatin TN (Sumner County)...many trips to take friends etc to see where and how it is made, I Love the work you guys have done! Been listening to Justin Johnson since he was on YT..
Man that guitar looks amazing, awesome job on the restore! I was cringing when he removed the neck from the body, was like a scene from an emergency room lol
People often say: "if I could turn back time, I'd do something different..." - I work as an electronics tech, absolutely love working in the trade with a passion.....but, if I could turn back time and do something different, I'd do this. Building guitars is one thing - restoring them is a different kettle of fish. There's a lot of blood, sweat and tears but the end result is worth it.
That's some great Craftmanship skills you've got there mate! Many thanks for sharing this video....that Gibson looks better than a bought one!
+1 to you sub list btw! :)
Gibson should hire and pay you high dollar to do their quality control.
I already work for Gibson and the people they're awesome but the managment there is to be desired for his is best to be abroad.
@@sweatysam6264 i agree. Generally any issues with a company starts at management.
They need it for sure....
@@sweatysam6264 You did kind of define every place I've worked at. Gibson would be a cool namebrand to work for, but the factory floor seems to be pretty miserable. Interesting & super noisy, but ultimately "jesus, this task again?" sad.
@@chrisryan1439 I bought 2 months ago a Les Paul Studio, and I had to put it back because came with a long scratch. Sad story.
Seeing how a guitar is constructed has given me more respect for my own instruments. Great video! You have some enviable skills!
Damn, that dark finish is so rich. So pretty
I love it when someone brings a guitar like this back from nothing, "trash" into a Guitar that'll be cherished and used for a long time to be.
My dear friend was the last luthier Steve Carr who was mentored by Jimmy D'Aquisto. Steve is most famous for his work with Kiss, but also worked on Twisted Sister, Brian Setzer and a guy named John who played in a little band called the Beatles. I believe he would have applauded you work. Miss him dearly. Great job.
Dedication at its ultimate this guy has so much passion for what he does and his work says it all.
Justin sent me here. I've wanted a tele for 35 years. Nice work and playing man. Thanks for taking care of these gems.
There's something so awesome about a aburst rubbed on by hand like that. They always looks so unique and often beautiful.
Dude with the amount of work you put into this guitar and your skills, you should've made a new one! hahah awesome video, very entertaining
He couldn't tell the story of its restoration though....Even Erlwine from Stewart Mac would approve of this restoration.
Oh! ... I was watching this ... and suddenly I thought I was in a Gibson Factory episode ... until You "pop up" ... This is true love for a classic guitar. Perfect job here !!! SUPERB !!
wow...you really brave enough man..The fretboard removal was the climax of this video to me. after all, I know that you got the high level of confident and know what you are doing. Great job man! Take care
Glad you enjoyed it!
Hoss that was awesome I can only imagine the real time that actually took to rebuild love this video and outstanding Job! You are a master of the trade!
I almost cried when you stripped the cherry sunburst off, but the refinish looks awesome.
Me too, but the beauty was reborn in the restoration....love the tobacco burst now.....I'd buy it!!
I didn't - it looked like a cheap Chibson popscicle before.
Great rebuild..!! showing all your techniques and tools is a great lesson.. Enjoy your Re-Paul
Its folks like you who make this world a special place, a lot of work went into the video not including the guitar... just a pleasure to watch and I learnt tons, thank you.
05:09 I had a little heart attack watching.
Removing wisdom teeth third molars is easier.
He just did the fret knibs while refretting. This is my second time watching this video and I'm once again impressed as hell. Insane skills, I love it!
This was awesome. You make it look easy with the time lapsed videos, but I can tell you worked your tail off on this.
GREAT STUFF MR.D THANKS FOR SUPPORT OF JUSTIN JOHNSON!!!!! GREAT JOB ON GUITAR!!!
Damn dude - talk about a major re-do!
You have the patience of a saint - that was an amazingly complete job! I'd go mad binding the fretboard like you did. Beautiful work.
Fantastic job on building these amazing guitars for everyone to enjoy!
I thought something was wrong with my audio and then I finally hear you play it. Wow... Just wow.... Beautiful work, and sounds awesome, yes even with the reverse wiring.
Dude... I'm at a loss for words. That was _amazing!_ Labor of love for sure, turned out magnificently too!
This was both the most stressful and beautiful thing I’ve watched in a while. It turned out great man!
You definitely have the right tools, You also have control over the tools Good work 71 year old Blues guitarist Los Angeles
Restoring history and making the guitar even better is the work of a true master, brother you have a truly superior knowledge, skill, and gift!
The finish on that guitar🔥🔥🔥 i’ve never seen that color on a Les Paul 😍 its very unique 👏🏼
Hands down one of the top 5 most beautiful guitars I’ve seen easily you should very proud to rebuild/own it!
I agree. Top 5 for me too, it's gorgeous.
Just getting into guitars and taking Justin Johnson’s finger picking course. I am looking forward to upgrading so I am glad Justin guided me to your channel so I can learn about this great instrument.
Blown away by the attention to detail on the neck binding. Brilliant work.
Still remember when you started this glad it finally got done.
I think the colour is absolutely perfect!!! I've never ever liked les Paul's EVER! untill I saw this.... My god what an exceptional looking guitar mate and just sounds absolutely stunning Id happily have one of these
There's a lot of us who love that deep, dark wood grained look done like this.
Justin Johnson from the bottom of my heart thanks a lot,
for your remarkable spirit and your amazing songs!!!
That is a beautiful result at the end. Hats off to you, sir!🎸🎸🎸
This is like watching open heart surgery on a family member. You sir get my respect for having the courage to tear apart a Les Paul and bring it back to life. Amazing work and fantastic job . Your skills are beyond description.
That was plain awesome. I love the way it was finished, it looks magnificent. Totally jealous on all levels.
I love watching videos like yours. I can’t do what you do, so I enjoy watching you do your magic !!!
An artist and his project. Way beyond good, dude...up there into the realm of wood wizard...watching that fret work was very educational. Thank you for sharing your talent on the tube so this Florida guy could say, 'Wow" beyond awesome!
Wow, when I read rebuild, you weren't kidding!! This is the most extensive rebuild that I've seen on RUclips.
Thanks. This took months.
With the amount of work you have put in this guitar, you can hardly call it a "Gibson"... Just better! well done!
I was about to whine saying: "Oh no the originality, the paint, you do not take the years out of the guitar, for that better get a new one etc. etc." but maaan the final product is beautiful and it looks pretty awesome I hope it also feels like that, sounds nice too... cheers.
Did I tell you yet that I watch your videos to relax and calm down amongst these insane times. I have a new product I am selling, but I’m so relaxed I can hardly type. Lol. Thanks
Whoa, one of the best restore i've seen! You're the man!
thank you!
Amazing job. I do setups and general repairs for friends and students. My wife watched this with me and said 'you should do that, you'd be good at it'. I can't think think of anything that I'm suited for worse than guitar restoration. Your attention to detail, methodical approach, and patience is absolutely fascinating. I was born and I am still wired as a sprinter, not a marathon runner. Dont mean to make this about me. Your talent is admirable sir! Stay safe and healthy.
Amazing! Watching a master craftsman is such a treat. Thank you for sharing the rebirth of the beautiful guitar.
Thank you for finding this!
Man I watched all of it and still amazed !......great job !
I didn't stop watching until the end, and I too was shakin' when you removed the neck. What a great looking guitar.
Once I saw that it was a Gibson “Standard”, I agreed it was worth the refurb. Absolutely NO Gibson “Studio” is Worth that amount of effort. Excellent job. I couldn’t do this.....I don’t have enough clamps. Lol
There are three kinds of Luthier level that attain this level of finish:
1) Luthier - standard
2) Master Luthier - Specialist
3) You - A Master Luthier aspires to become like you.
Bloody great work!
thank you!
Mate…omfg…what a transformation,the colour is spot on…really amazing work 😬👍🏻🤘🏻
Great craftsmanship, you did a fantastic job of that. Well done!
Some fine craftsmanship resulting in a beautiful instrument. You brought it back from the dead.
thank you!
Always wanted to see a deconstruction.....Awesome! Love the work. Cheers from Australia
That's what you call a guitar repair specialist brilliant brilliant brilliant
Never thought I would ever actually see such an overhaul!
You take no bullshit !
Respect
You seem to be one of the few with the correct response. This was an overhaul, not a restoration. A restoration is when something is returned to it's original condition. The finish is far from original in color or burst. The end result looks amazing, but it is not a restoration.
Yup, I believe it's the right word to say, since EVERYTHING came apart.
Neck, fretboard, binding!
It's definitely an overhaul.
I have never seen anything like that before
That’s some serious skill. Looks even harder than building a guitar from scratch!
i wouldnt call a restore. it looks incredibly better than before. what a great finish. amazing job
Beautiful Les Paul and the color is killer! Congratulation, your skill is as a 'Luthier' is of the highest quality. Keep the video rolling...
That guitar sounds perfect to me. Great Job!
Truly some very fine work! Your fretboard binding is just outstanding, that’s the way to really do it correctly. Just a wonderful restoration Derek.
thank you my friend!
Beautifully skilled job man! It turned out amazingly well!! Thanks for the video.
Thanks for all the tips and help buddy!
When the neck came off with that sickening crack, I flinched. 😂 great job on the restoration!!
I should have had a camera on my face...
Dude that was crazy I love the dark finish on it I think you did a great job
Absolutely bloody marvelous! You sir are a true artist. You also have the patience of a Saint to be able to accomplish such a beautiful piece of art. Thanks for a extremely interesting video.
this is probably the best restoration I've seen so far
ALL I CAN SAY IS AMAZING PATIENCE.... AS I CAN'T DRAW A STRAIGHT LINE WITH A RULER SO THIS IS JUST AMAZING PERIOD.
The most incredible restore I have ever seen! That looks beautiful! I almost looked away when the neck was popped off though. It was painful to watch. Great work and amazing talent.
Fantastic job!
Wow. Nice job! That turned out absolutely beautiful!
"yeah i have to reverse the wiring" ha! nice job D, love the back of the instrument by the way that's very cool!!
Woah, the finished guitar looks so similar to my Bourbon Burst Standard!
Mine has a darker than usual burst too, so it's cool to see one with the same finish.
Its nice when you see a really well loved and beaten up guitar because you know it must have a lot of memories and has probably been played a lot. Sparkly new guitars are nice and all, but the ones that just look as though they have been played make you feel all happy inside.
