- This was my first sale of the year preparing for the 100 mile voyage expedition from Ireland to Iona in September 2022.
Dunbar sailing club did a race around the isle of May. It’s a 21 nautical mile round-trip. We did this on 14 May 2022 started at 10 AM and returned five hours later.
The dinghy is a Mirror 16 sailed single-handed this time.
When was force four gusting five most of the time and the boat fared well.
It was a great beginning for of the sailing season and the preparation for the 100 mile expedition from Ireland to Iona in September 2022.

Love the video and the spirit you show in sailing. I know the area well from childhood. My only comment is that for your proposed long passage offshore you need a second reef in the main. If it gets above force five with a large swell, you will need a very snug rig. I even found, admittedly in a smaller boat, that on one occasion when running downwind it was useful to be able to rig a spare jib as trysail. (with reefed main up there was too much sail and without it not enough.) Good luck. Fair winds and smooth seas!
I very much enjoyed this video. Thank you.
Fantastic stuff - love it. I was stuck in Edinburgh all day. I'm green with envy!
That is one hell of a stable dinghy, i have a Drascombe coaster, but im not sure it would sail as well in those conditions, well not with me at the helm. Really enjoyed this video
Thanks. She certainly handled it well. I think being slightly off close hauled made her more stable
I'm glad that you numbered the next twenty something videos. I just discovered your channel, and I am quite enjoying your videos. I scrolled back here to number one so I can watch them in order. Thank you for making these, I hear that there is a lot of time and trouble to get it all recorded, edited and uploaded. I really appreciate it. I'm a beginner sailer. Just bought a Dolphin Senior 15 and have been out on a Texas lake just five times. Loving it. Thanks again.
A pleasure
Really great sailing, amazingly fast and you are a tough sailor. I did wonder about keeping things tied into the boat just in case. Also can you drop the mainsail easily in a furious blow and can you remove water effectively? Maybe have a paper chart as well as GPS for the long passage? Good sailing. David
Paper chart was laminated and folded in my pocket :)
Your approach and preparation for your long journey is quite sensible.
Re my earlier comment, I see from your other video about Dunbar to Anstruther that you do have two reefs in! Is a third required if you get caught out in force 6? Fascinating videos. The real thing.
The main is going off to the sailmaker to get a third and fourth reef put in! On Thursday.
I used to sail a Miracle single handed and it had a reef in the sail which I think was a bigger reef than the one you have. Was that a Mirror 16? Very nice.
What a great day. The helm impeder looks to work very well. Does your genoa have a blade along the luff for it to wrap around when it is furled?
Great stuff.
Best wishes
Al
It has a hollow aluminum tube to roll around.
Loved the friction auto-helm set up.
I got it from a great book called the Dinghy Sailing Companion. www.amazon.co.uk/Dinghy-Cruising-Companion-Roger-Barnes/dp/1408179164/ref=asc_df_1408179164_nodl/?tag=googshopuk-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=310942022633&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=8197721877441621776&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=1007380&hvtargid=pla-459076307481&psc=1&th=1&psc=1
Enjoy your enthusiasm Darius, thanks for sharing
It looks like you had a great sail. I'm always surprised that the mirror 16 wasn't more popular. It's a great cruising dinghy. I'm looking forward to when you post your big cruise video.
Great video.
Really impressive, sail safe!
My name is Dariusz too and I enjoy your videos. I'm somewhat a sailor myself as I canoe the Columbia. Great show!
