Yes. I'd have dinner with her 2 or 3 times each winter when I moored my yacht off Pointe Focinane and played Chemin de Fer in the casino at Monte Carlo with my good friend Prince Ranier.
In Spain we call it "tener duende", a passion, a magic born from the depths of your gut. Very few people have it. Carmen Amaya did it. Check Camaron de la Isla for more "duende".

I love all types of dancing, and the technical moves of ballet and modern dancing are jaw dropping, BUT this woman, Carmen Amaya, moves me like no other!! She is magnificent! She inspires me to dance, as I do, with all of my heart, all of my emotions, all of my power free-flowing throught it, forget any and all around me! I am always moved whenever I watch her. The very first time I saw her over the RUclips, she moved me to tears. No other dancer of any form has captured me in such a way.
I saw a common Amaya at the Village Gate in New York City down in the village in 1960 I was just amazed at emotional strength and her ability to translate into dancing what she was feeling.
Carmen Amaya and Jose Greco are by far the best flamenco dancers of all time. No one comes close. Just watching them is a master class. What a great find! Thanks❣️

What made Carmen unique, in addition to her mastery of the art, was her physique...so lithe and nimble as a squirrel: it allowed her to make such sudden and precise movements. She never gave me the impression that her dancing as learned, ever natural.
Amazing. What a legendary talent. The passion. Bravo 👏 👏 👏 is it me or the dancers from the 50, 60, and 70's dance differently than flamenco dancers after 2000? I mean their passion their firm steps are so different than today. The way she plays those castanets is stupendous. The speed, wow. And her feet, I am in awe. ❤🌹
1:07 This is so similar to the now famous African dance known as "impossible dance" called Zaouli Dance. On a side note, as a child living in Rio in the 1960s, I had the supreme privilege of seeing don Antonio Ruiz Soler dance at the Municipal Theater several times, since my father bought seats for every presentation, year after year. They eventually became 'friends' when my dad managed to infiltrate the backstage early on, and he and someone else whom I'll never remember, came for dinner in our house (it was a momentous event for my dad who went all out making sure it was perfect), three or fourr times and in one of those nights, quite by chance, we discovered don Antoinio and I were born on the same day of the year; November 4!
I’m used to traditional flamenco dress so seeing her in matador pants / jacket is startling yet provocative. In pants you see the full range of body moving through the story of the Dance ... Duende! Ole’! 💕
About twenty years ago, I saw a documentary here in Santa Barbara (flamenco is a major activity in this town), "Carmen Amaya, Queen of the Gypsies". I bought the VHS from the documentary director for $50, a fabulous sum at the time. Our annual Fiesta is starting next week and the only reason I still have a VHS player is to watch this film as a warm up for our week of gluttonous gorging on flamenco dance and music.
This is exactly what i feel, when i listen to flamenco. Energy, passion, mystique! I love, how she is not trying hard to dance in a seductive way - i have this feeling, that when i see women dance, they often tend to rely on their looks and emphasize them to seduce us rather than seduce us with dancing itself. This just feels so pure and authentic.
Ohhh dear, no one is trying to seduce anyone in particular. Flamenco is pure seduction itself! Is the core of its nature. Please do not feel ofend atacked or seduced unless your name has been spoken to you while at it.
Although some of the commenters seem to deliberately misunderstand you, I know what you mean. With some dancers it seems to be more about flaunting curves and casting sultry looks than the actual dance. This woman was pure passion and rhythm, which to me is more attractive to watch.

Because is tribal!!!!!
Thank goodness for film, such talent to be see by many.
This is incredible dancing...I wish I had seen her dancing live...what a treat finding this....
Waw
I saw a common Amaya at the Village Gate in New York City down in the village in 1960 I was just amazed at emotional strength and her ability to translate into dancing what she was feeling.
Carmen Amaya and Jose Greco are by far the best flamenco dancers of all time. No one comes close. Just watching them is a master class. What a great find! Thanks❣️

As a student of the Elsa Brunelleschi Spanish Dance Academy in London, I was privileged to watch a rehearsal from backstage. An amazing experience. She is the only person I have ever seen who got away smoking backstage!
Magnificent,! Extraordinary. Flamenco performed by a Spaniard in Spain. Where it all began.no where else.
I first read about Carmen in a book by the famous British ballerina Margot Fonteyn,"The Magic of Dance".Now I see why Dame Margot spoke so highly of her! Thank you, very much, for sharing this!
I heard that Fred Astaire was also a big fan.
@@beforeourveryeyes I wouldn't be at all surprised.
@@unseelie63 :)
@@beforeourveryeyes no, Fred Astaire was a Big fan of Carmen MargaRita Cansino who started as flamenco dancer when she was a girl and became a georgeous Holliwood actress. He musted to work with her some scenes dancing and said about her that was the most gifted and disciplinated dancer tha he ever meet : Rita Hayworth !!!
She's absolutely beautiful and extraordinary godbless her soul💞❣
Rapt, unbroken, focused attention has left me awe-struck...in a way that I have only ever experienced watching a male dancer, the great Fred Astaire. Then, there was the great Rita Hayworth, one of Astaire's lesser-known dance partners, but for me, she could dance just as rapturously in solo mode. Few people know that Rita was born in the US to an emigree Spanish family, which made the US home.
Carmen Amaya. for ever. y viva su gente.
Victor muchas gracias hoy me enseñaste algo nuevo muchas gracias saludos 😘
..@@patriciahernandez6612.
Impresionante!
Cierto.
Spanish flamenco dance, I think it is the most beautiful and most wonderful at all, where we see beauty, pride, strength, and glory, dancer looks like like a free horse ... sounds authentic rhythm.Hitting the ground with feet in this force reminds me of the Arabian horse ... clinging to the ground and clinging to dirt
Splendor behind the splendor
What made Carmen unique, in addition to her mastery of the art, was her physique...so lithe and nimble as a squirrel: it allowed her to make such sudden and precise movements. She never gave me the impression that her dancing as learned, ever natural.
From Madrid España Eddy Nova.
Gran artista! Simply breath-taking.
Magnifica, insuperable...
MAGNIFICENT......JOSE GRECO & CARMEN AMAYA on stage together would have been heaven on earth !!
what a beautiful artist. As Andalucian, I feel it in my bones.
NO HABRA OTRA IGUAL!

Gracias.
Her fingers make almost as loud a sound as her boots..amazing!
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏❤
this music made me cry with tears...a truly splendid performance.
She's not just dancing with power, she even literaly embody a soldier spirit.
I’m used to traditional flamenco dress so seeing her in matador pants / jacket is startling yet provocative. In pants you see the full range of body moving through the story of the Dance ... Duende! Ole’! 💕
Never heard about her. I am speechless, she is wonderful
She is her own league! We are all so fortunate that video film was around to capture her.. 🙏🏼 Absolutely Amazing!!❤️
I think a womans natural movements are passionate not intended to seduce generally speaking....
Ohhh dear, no one is trying to seduce anyone in particular. Flamenco is pure seduction itself! Is the core of its nature. Please do not feel ofend atacked or seduced unless your name has been spoken to you while at it.
I couldn't agree more, I love your comment.
Although some of the commenters seem to deliberately misunderstand you, I know what you mean. With some dancers it seems to be more about flaunting curves and casting sultry looks than the actual dance. This woman was pure passion and rhythm, which to me is more attractive to watch.
There is nothing I like better than Flamenco in all it’s levels and presentations!
Universally beautiful and artful. Sublime.
OMG!!!
In the last dance, the guitarist to the right (her left) is Sabicas, the greatest Flamenco guitarist in history, who was in love with Carmen.
"In 1952 she married guitarist Juan Antonio Agüero, a member of her troupe. A man belonging to a distinguished family from Santander, who was not a gypsy. They lived an authentic love story and celebrated an intimate wedding." (from wikipedia)
Stanley Okimoto I saw Sabicas live way back when I lived in Miami at the Dade County Auditorium
Never heard of Sabicas. They musicians all leave the stage in a hurry, so I'm assuming the recording is sped up.
I imagine a lot of people were in love with her.
@@donnawoodford6641 "Never heard of Sabicas." If you like flamenco guitar, then please do youtube searches on "Sabicas". Everyone I know who seriously played flamenco guitar considers Sabicas unsurpassed, including Paco de Lucia. Sabicas produced about 30 LPs, some solo, some with other top flamenco artists. In the period from about 1940 to 1970 he essentially defined flamenco guitar.
She's very tiny, but powerful. I had the pleasure of meeting Omaya Amaya, her grand-daughter and amazing dancer as well!
Linda, bonita, perfecta!
So many ways to define dance- to me it's a creative outlet; a way to interpret and express emotions and feelings. Flamenco is just so passionate!
