Carmen Amaya was Flamenco Royalty. One of her grand nieces, Omayra Amaya, lives and dances in NYC. Just two days ago, I had the privilege of seeing her beautiful dancing in Boston.
Carmen Amaya was one of the best dancers of all time. At the time of the filiming she was already suffering from kidney disease. From touring in windy trains. This Oscar-nominated film is a legacy for her incredible talent.
One of the most amazing things I've ever seen and heard in all my life. This film reel was not sped up. That is her actual foot, body and hand speed. Her singing made the hair on my neck stand up. As soon as this began my life went supernova.

Their lips, mouths and eyes move in sync with the music, which is not distorted. They ARE clapping that fast, and the guitar player IS being that rapid in his strumming. There is SHOCKING REAL SPEED in the Lady Artist's hand movement and dance body movement. Her hand-dancing on the table . Rapping her knuckles and flicking her fingers and palm-slamming the table top. That is REAL.
No. A lot of old film was recorded at 18 frames per second, whereas the industry standard is now 24fps. So when old film is played with modern equipment, it appears sped up by 1.5x. As another commenter says, this doesn't detract from how incredible Amaya is, but to present this as the "real" speed is simply inaccurate. (Plus, with technology these days, it is perfectly possible to speed up or slow down film and then adjust the audio so it matches the video and still sounds natural.)

I saw this movie years ago and I loved this scene where she dances after the young girl and shows how it's done.. Wonderful movie, it was like the Romeo and Juliette story. I'd love to see this movie again if it were possible.
Carmen Amaya is fabulous. She's the Andalusian queen, and even she's considered Catalonian, she spent most of here life there, she was born in Granada, Andalusia.

Pues ya ves,como los americanos le pusieron el nombre de Carmen a un crater de venus, con lo que el lucero del alba ahora es solo para recordar a Carmen cada vez que lo vea..la verdad es que no hay palabras suficientes, al menos en castellano para expresar quien era Carmen Amaya, de todo lo que se ha dicho, es poco para como debío ser en vida, privilegio para muchos el haberla podido conocer o aun mejor , haberla visto pegarle fuego a esos tablaos, te puedo asegurar que a pesar de ser andaluz y no gustarme el flamenco, el dia que ví a Carmen, me quede estupefacto,nunca habia visto a nadie con ese impetu,esa forma de taconear, a tal velocidad y es en este video donde ni la guitarra la alcanza...esas manos tocando en la mesa, ese compás...y esos 4 viajes que le mete a la mesa...con toda la fuerza del mundo...ufff...que podria decir. Solo siento que se le haya olvidado en España, ella que dio a conocer al país allá donde iba, en fin espero que algun dia se le reconozca de nuevo dejando su nombre como patrimonio de la humanidad.

Definitivamente hay que quitarse el sombrero ante la figura de Carmen Amaya: Rompió con el concepto del flamenco "light" para mujeres; fue una de las primeras artistas en lucir pantalones en el cine (1937); y, para colmo, en esta escena bailó con su acostumbrada energía, pasión y entrega como si no le doliera ni una uña ESTANDO PRACTICAMENTE EN SU ETAPA TERMINAL POR SU ENFERMEDAD RENAL!
no vi la pelicula, pregunto, esta aumentada la velocidad en la pelicula en si misma? como si quisiesen que pareciera mas rapido y acelerado todo.......en velocidad pura y real hubiera sido mas apreciable el ritmo los golpes y acentuaciones extraordinarias que hacia carmen, con pies, manos, cuerpo, tmb el cante..etc..y esos guitarristas increibles
