It will be different for everyone of course. If it helps, I’m 5’10 as mentioned in the video and am usually around 155-160 lb. I find an athletic cut with the Ghost Whisperer to fit comfortably and can fit a lightweight fleece to fit well if needed. Anything thicker like a Patagonia Better Sweater or more and I’d be compressing the down. I can wear that same Better Sweater under the Torrid without any trouble wearing the medium I went with. A small would have put me in the same position as the Ghost Whisperer. The Torrid has a lot of loft too as seen in the video. Good luck!
@@SeniorHiker77 I bought a stock medium and a stock large. I found out I needed a medium long. Sent the 2 jackets back to order my custom. Well worth the $12 poastage.

Thanks Hill! Warmth will be different for each individual based on varying factors. This video was only my first impressions and not at all a review since I hadn't had a lot of use with the jacket at the time. Therefore I didn't mention the warmth of the jacket. At the time of this comment, I can report that I have had the jacket out on multiple backpacking trips and it has performed very well. I've been comfortable in it around camp in temps below zero while wearing a 200 weight merino wool l/s shirt as a base layer and an outer shell. I've also worn it as an active insulation layer with a 150 weight l/s base layer in temps in the single digits and have also been comfortable with it on down to the mid 20s with a 150 weight merino s/s shirt. Hope this helps. I'll be sharing more feedback to the channel as the winter season transitions to spring.
Hi, any new experiences with the torrid jacket? Im curious about the breathability, you mentioned that you bought the jacket with 7D inner and 10D outher, Is this combination good enough? Have you collected some more experiences on this regard? Transports it good moisture out? Im searching quite a while for good breathable jacket but still cant find the good balance between the breathability and wind resistance, eather it is too wind resistand and doesnt breath or less resistand any I get cold. Thanks for any help, I cant decide between 7D/7D and 7D/10D.
retkvi Thanks for checking in. I've had the jacket out on a few day hikes and a backpacking trip so far since posting the first look video. So far it has been in windy, dry and cold conditions with temps between 21 F and 50 F. I've worn it with a Smartwool 150 wt short sleeved shirt and a Senchi Polartec alpha fleece while hiking and also on its own with a Smartwool 150 wt long sleeved shirt. I've also worn it around camp and slept in it for a night with my EE Enigma quilt. So far so good, but with the type of jacket it is and the construction it shouldn't be expected to breathe too well. Unfortunately there are tradeoffs in most cases with insulation, wind resistance and breathability. In my experience, a good layering system would be the best bet to address varying conditions. The 7D feels nice and it does help displace moisture to a certain extent. Though if I overdo it with the jacket on and sweat a lot, the 7D has stuck a little to my skin (I'd expect that with most insulated jackets). The jacket has also accidentally come in contact with brush while hiking and I did't have any signs of damage so I am happy with the choice in the 10D outer. The lack of baffles in the design makes this jacket very warm and I've been comfortable in 30 mph wind gusts in it so far. I'm planning to get it out in colder weather in the next couple of weeks and look forward to reporting back on my experiences with it throughout the upcoming winter. If you run warm, see yourself on established trails and are looking to cut weight as much as possible a 7/7 might work well. I've been happy with my choice in fabrics so far. Hope this helps and that you enjoy whichever fabric you decide for your Torrid.
@@matjobin Thanks for the deep dive into your experiences :), Im from europe and so not many folks around here have this jacket , only the prefabricated 10/10D version that can be bought localy. I think I run cold? I cant stand cold weather if Im not dressed warm, I tend to sweat quite extensively but I dont heat up and if I wear softshell, or some not as warm jacket, then I catch cold most of the times. So the balance between breathability and wind resistance plays an important role for me. Hope the 7D/10D would be good choice. Just one thing, you mentioned Senchi Polartec alpha fleece, can it be bought somewhere? I looked it up and its made in japan? I also had some alpha pieces like the rab alpha direct jacket, but I sold it two years ago, it was too warm and now I bought something like your fleece but withoud hood or sleves, "santini alpha base layer" , but that senchi looks even better.
@@retkvi No worries. Hope the 7D/10D works well for you over there. Senchi is located here in The States in Oregon. Take a look at Senchi Designs. Farpointe, Vado and Kuiu all make great options too. You may also want to look into Brynje Wool Mesh layers. The Senchi Designs Wren I have has been fantastic. It has an athletic fit but they are working on a more inclusive and universal sizing with their fleeces which is awesome! It's an active layer and I've been comfortable in it between -4 and 15 Celsius. Though that experience will be different for everyone and what works for one person might not work for another. @@manxxique Awesome! Yeah it runs a little big which I have been liking. Picked up a pair of EE Torrid Apex pants too. Both have been great insulation pieces on backpacking trips this winter!
Screw E.E. they charge tooo much try Jack R Better, cuz they are somewhat cheaper and 100 times better and better customer service also. Just buy more than one if u have kids cuz ur kid will steal it for their everday blanket and u will never get it back from them lol. But thats a sleeping quilt, but it does have a hood and sleeves u can attach on the one i have

The thing that keeps me from pulling the trigger is what size to order. Rob Pelton had trouble with sizing.
