Asda sell Budvar in six packs of 330ml cans. You can buy two for £10 so works out equivalent to about £1.25 for 500ml. That's a great price for such a quality beer.
I'm a massive fan of Budvar it's always been one of my favourite beers. Tried the Czech Mates a few days ago and really enjoyed it so much so I went back to Lidl and put 10 cans in my trolley yesterday. For me they are both very very good but the Budvar just edges it. Cheers 🍻
When Czech Mates first went in lidl a few months back I did a blind comparison. Got the missus to pour them so I had no idea which was which. I fully expected to prefer budvar but I didn't.
Stone the Crows!!! I tried the Budvar for the first time in the states. It was disappointing. Sticking with the Bitburger, as my daily crusher. I don't think this will ever change. the Warsteiner is cheaper but still very good. The new Helles by Weinhenstepheiner is also a very good option. The new- american Pilsners that are out are fantastic, but getting pricey. $4-6 dollars for a can.
Great review and good on you for explaining the "Czech Pour". I will be sharing this with a couple of friends who think I use it as an excuse for not being able to pour! As to the beer, I really like Budvar (the dark is my favourite) and given the tiny price difference I don't really understand what the Budvar Czech Mates is for, given that Budvar Original is stronger and better. Unless it's pure marketing and trying to attract people who might think that original Budvar is too old school?
Great match-up Simon. While I didn`t do a comparison together I had these within a few days of each other & I preferred the Czech Mates which I found a little sharper & more to my personal taste as a lager drinker, but acknowledge these are both great beers & close in quality.
Hello Simon! Have you tried Bernard 12 Czech Lager as well? Its also beautifully bready and balanced! :-) I also recommend Zichovec craft beers, such as Krahulik or Fresh Saaz Shine :-)
Just got a 5l budvar keg from majestic wine for £18.50 decent price looking forward to it. Always a good beer. Have you tried M&S german pilsner brewed by ABK Really good quality beer £2.30 a bottle.
Really enjoyed it tonight, I did some ALDI french fries with salt, vinegar and red sauce. But, but, but i put 8 bottles of Steinhausser in the fridge. Its 2.16 am and im avin one now after the chips. What s good life better than King Charles lol
I thought the point of a hard pour (as well as knocking the carbonation out of the beer) was to create a big, lasting head on the beer? Which is ironic because even with a hard pour, the Budvar never keeps it’s head.
It is exactly as you say you want a head to protect the beer from oxidation, but the shape of the budvar glass with its wide opening is not conducive to holding a big creamy head, they only work for the kegged stuff and even then it starts to lose its head half way down, I drank budvar in Prague it's much better than green bottled stuff we get here🍻
Anybody seen Czech Mates in any of the Lidl or Morrisons stores in London??? I've been to 4 Lidls and 2 Mozza.... Can't find it anywhere! Cheers in advance...
Budvar is so much nicer in the can than the bottle, maybe its the green bottle. Budvar top draw and made in czech. Always look where its made! UK dont bother

Pilsner Urquell is in that same deal, mix of those two is a bloody bargain
I better get my arse to asda

Budvar takes the win for me. I was slightly disappointed in the Czech Mates, far from a bad beer though m

Any updates on the back garden or when the live stream is returning? Cheers.
Great video again Simon. I've now gone back to drinking lagers and wheat beers as hoppy IPAs were upsetting my stomach a little.
Beer festival at lidl started on the 26th, still on though. Great deal
I'm glad i found your channel Si , I now want a drink though so , I'm off to the fridge to get my Madri
I did wonder who bought Madri! 😂
Have you reviewed the Budvar Dark lager yet? Really didn't quite know what to make of it - Lager with a split personality....
Hello Simon! Have you tried Bernard 12 Czech Lager as well? Its also beautifully bready and balanced! :-) I also recommend Zichovec craft beers, such as Krahulik or Fresh Saaz Shine :-)
Hi, Simon. Would you consider this for a ‘vs battle’? Fullers vs Shepherd Neame. You could start with London Pride vs Spitfire.
1845 vs 1698 would be a good comparison too. I prefer 1845, whereas my Dad prefers 1698.
Yes, this could be a ‘mini-series’ I know Fullers are no-longer independent, but they’re two of our oldest, and most cherished ‘traditional’ breweries
I used to drink a lot of Budvar when I was a student in Bah thirty years ago. Not had it much since. I must remedy that
Best price what I'm aware of is Home Bargains, budvar £1.65; pilsner urquell £1.89

The water will be making a difference too. Good review, Simon.
Another good one from Lidl, 330ml cans called Keller, about 6%. Very nice
Home bargains Budvar is £1.59 and £1.79 for the dark lager.
I always go for the dark lager when it's in home bargains over the original. I don't know what it is but I seem to prefer it more 🙂
@@kylereed9309 I agree the dark is better.
Try the budvar dark lager. Lovely drop, sold in home bargains
Typed this before I got to the end of the video 😂
I have not found that in our Lidl yet
I live in London and haven't seen the Czech Mate cans yet at all!

Have in lidl in Eltham
This isn't available anywhere near me, been trying Lidl since it launched and not even in any Morrisons ! 😭😭😭
The heads were different because you poured the can more vigorously than you did the bottle.
This was a great versus. Good review buddy. Thornbridge are over rated
That Budvar dark is £1 79 in HB 😉
Czech mates smashes American bud out the park! Cheapest in Lidl lovely!
I'll be at a bonny party at a Thornbridge pub on saturday, I've taken a bank loan to cover a round
I just brought both to enjoy at a later date because i am busy at work so don't drink.
22/072024 Tesco £1.60 for the Budvar
Simon when are you doing the stoned crow again?
Your doing well finding Czech mates lager no sign near me
In my local Morrisons now, was Lidl at first
@@RedKel99 thanks I've seen it on website appreciated
Ah the shelf is overflowing in my local Lidl in Cardiff!
Interesting distribution strategy 🤔
Economies of scale.
If i was a catholic i would make a confession to the priest that I had no Steinhausser in my fridge. It is Gods beer.
Never been a fan of Thornbridge
Can you review estrella damn daura it’s 5.4% I believe. Like the proper estrella in Barcelona.
£3.25 at morrisons

4 for 6 quid in my b m store
Czech Pour? - Surely that = Flat Lager? Not for me I am afraid.
No, not flat on the contrary. You knock out the excess, but then the nice foam head keeps the carbonation conserved.
It’s not flat
