  • These are some simple ways I use to form copper and steel wire. The result can be for a functional purpose like making a hook for hanging wall sculptures. Or, it can be an integral part of a sculpture.

    Those hands. That voice. I don't have any wires that need bending but I would happily hang out at your workshop listening to you read assembly instructions :)

    I like the voice, you sound like a radio/movie narrator, thanks for the ideas.

      Hi George, Happy 4th of July.!
      No, I don't have a website. I am looking forward to your next video. I just got a doming set from Harbor Freight do you have any projects that use one?

    • @897473
      @897473  10 лет назад

      LUV4TINK Doming set. I have the same doming set. Unfortunately I loaned it to a jeweler who hasn't returned it. Lesson for me: Don't loan tools! I have a few ideas for doming. When I get the set back I'll see what I can do. Incidentally the Harbor Freight doming set is one of the best buys around. I have another doming block that is cost a lot more and doesn't have as many punches.

      I agree about the quality of the set. I first bought a small wooden one that was almost useless. I used a 25% coupon @ Harbor
      Freight and that really sweetened the deal. The only problem was that I got 2 size 10 dies, but they opened a new box and exchanged the one that I needed. I tried doming pennies to make beads, but the new pennies break around the outline of Lincoln's head. I watched a video where a women used it to melt pieces of plastic bottle and the dies to shape into jewelry pieces, I am going to try to incase copper inside some of the plastic. The lending of tools is a very touchy subject. If is a really expensive item. They don't feel like that have to get it fixed if they broke it while using it. I lend my uncle my power washer to clean his house and it leaked like crazy when I got it back. I also lent the same uncle my hard vac and the pull was locked up when I got it back, he said it was like that he tried to use it. I know it wasn't because I had to show him to use it and I never had any problem before or since. Good luck with getting your doming set back.

    I used to work as an orthotist (orthopedic brace maker for disabled people). In the old days we used to bend a lot of aluminum or stainless bars and bands for braces, There are "contouring irons", as they are called, available at most orthotic and prosthetic supply houses. Google up "bending irons" or "orthotic bending irons." They are high priced, however. (PS, nice video, thank you.)

    What thickness stainless steel wire do you recommend for making a mobile for outside use (approximately 4 feet long and 18 -24 inches wide)? Also, can 8 gauge music wire be bent using the methods you demonstrate on this video? Thank you!

    • @897473
      @897473  7 лет назад

      Sorry, can't help. Never worked with heavier stainless wire and don't know anything about music wire. You might see if you can find anything on Alex Calder and his use of stainless steel.

    Thanks I'm making vase holders to hang on a wall it has to be strong enough to hold water maybe a fish with plant vase has to easly remove from vase where can I look for tools or make them?

      Twisting wire strands together will definitely make for stronger holders. Interesting idea you have. Let me know how it turns out.

    Hi George,
    Could you give me an idea of how I would bend a "pigtail" (i.e. the yarn guide used in yarn winders)?
    Thanks!

    Can't we just put those pins in the vice and bend it?

    • @897473
      @897473  6 лет назад

      That may work for you, but I find it difficult to keep them steady in the vice.
