Wire Bender - Wire Bending Jig

  • I thought I'd upload a video about a wire bending jig / wire former I made to possibly help someone else out who may have a need to make something similar. A wire bender really helps when you need to make a lot of bends in hard wires like music wire, high carbon spring steel, stainless steel spring wire and memory wire. These types of wire are really hard and pretty difficult to bend by hand with pliers. This particular jig makes both angled bends and a closed loop / double loop. You could wrap and make your own torsion springs by putting multiple turns on your wire the same way I show on the double loop. A jig like like this could be used for bending wire for fishing lures, bending wire for jewelry, or for bending wire for crafts. I hope this video is useful to you. If it is, please consider subscribing to my channel, it really helps me out! Y'all take care!

    Awesome job on the jig! I'm a tool maker apprentice, I love seeing old school style tool making projects. Great work! 👍

    Nice job. I had a job years ago making a small coil spring. I made a fixture much like a fly tying jig to get the correct size spring. ( very small spring)
    That’ll work for a lot of the things you’re making. I like your fixture. Just giving you some other ideas!

    Very nicely done! I'm impressed. I'm even more impressed that you have 12k+ subscribers and I didn't have to wait through ads before the video started. You rock.

      I saw some videos on wire benders you can buy that people were using for RC airplane landing gear. It wasn’t exactly what I was wanting, but looked like a useful tool for that purpose.

    Very nice! Yeah that wire isn’t easy to bend by hand and stay consistent with the shape.

    That's cool. Also you might wanna check out the old Netcraft wire former. I think they were still making them up until recently.

    Nice bend jig, good job!
    Instead of sacrificing drill bits you could use ejector pins used for injection molding or stamp pins used in metal stamping. If you get a bulk bag or have a tool and die maker nearby go ask them and they probably will be cheaper and sturdier than the drill bits. The ejector pins are usually surface hardened to around 54-60 HRC. You can get them in many diameters and they come in various lenghts. Hope this helps

    I never tried but is it possible to run a drill bit shank thru a run of the mill die then screw and loctite the pins in? Bit might be a bit hard.

    • @TheFishingHobby
      @TheFishingHobby  4 месяца назад

      Drill bits are hardened but there are ways to do it. It wouldn’t be worth the effort in my opinion.

    I have a wire bender that I bought for a couple of bucks a few years ago. Each end has different forms like round square and tringular and in the middle there are five holes drilled close together that take pins for making tighter bends and angles

    Refer to 5:20 step , what if you flip the wire sir?

    • @TheFishingHobby
      @TheFishingHobby  Год назад

      You would end up with the same bend by flipping it over, but I would still need to add the pins in to keep the wire from moving when I go on to bend the lower section.

    At 3:20 I can see what you meant when you said you have "hand problems"...
    I've been trying to get my finger to do that for the past 5 minutes and I gotta say, I don't think it's supposed to...😬

    in reality tightening the screw is not necessary, as long as there is a stop, because you can clearly see that the two ends are not parallel.

    • @TheFishingHobby
      @TheFishingHobby  6 месяцев назад

      The screw isn’t there to try and keep the wire even/parallel. It is just there to clamp the wire so it doesn’t slide towards the pin as the wire is rotating around the pin. I started out with the base plate and the main pin the wire gets wrapped around. The wire would pull towards the pin as soon as you started wrapping the wire around that pin and that made the double loop deformed looking. The spring steel wire requires a lot of torque to make that double loop and I couldn’t hold it using just my fingers so I added the screw to clamp the wire down so that wouldn’t happen. The spring steel wire isn’t straight to start with because it is from a coiled roll of spring steel wire.
