You're a legend Kinga! Good to see you're seeing some great sights in NZ. Sorry to hear about you loosing your pegs & camping stove! Hopefully they turn up! Very unlike you that's for sure-must be distracted. All the best for the rest of your trip & hope you enjoyed New Zealand.

Kinga- with your knife you could whittle a few pegs! Once I left one of the segments of my aluminum tent pole (the bungee had broken and I KNEW I had to be extra careful about not losing that segment)! I still lost it! (red face).

Oh, lovely, I'm all jealous now. ;-)
I did the run from Christchurch over Arthur's Pass 15 years ago (and on down the south-west coast). The Otira Viaduct is amazing. Back then in Arthur's Pass there was the Sanctuary, a bunk house run on the honesty box system. Had the place all to ourselves, including a bath! :-)
Bruce Bay is a nice place to stop and stack some stones. Don't do what I did though and get stuck in Haast over Easter with a destroyed rear tyre. 3 days later I could get on the road again with a completely worn out 170 sportbike tyre on the back of the little DR650. Because everything else would've had to be flown in from Christchurch and taken even longer. Hey, it held air...
"Haast" is Dutch for "hurry", so getting stuck there for 3 days was quite ironic.
The bridge across the Haast estuary is pretty special too, it's so long.

I've been in numerous places where it was impossible to drive a stake into the ground. I carry a couple of the canvas shopping bags and a bundle of paracord, plus a few of the heavy duty plastic shopping bags. I can use the paracord to attach to a tree or picnic table or the motorcycle. If there is nothing to attach to, I can put rocks in the shopping bags. With a free-standing tent, you just need enough weight to extend the vestibule. For motorcycle camping, I would never use a tent that was not free-standing.
Canvas bags can also be used as place mats, towels, and shopping bags. Plastic bags are less durable, but are also less bulky and may be obtained at a grocery store when you stop for groceries. You'll likely find more uses.

When we were camping on the isle of Sky ,in Scotland ,the midges were in swarms ,I've never sworn so much ,packing up our tent in my life.
Bug spray does nothing to them.
Tent poles we were camping in the Canadian Rockies, yep left the pegs behind, used rocks to hold the tent up .

Arthur's Pass Village and the lookout point 5.30 into the video are both good places to see kia, the world's only alpine parrot. I have even had one come for a ride on my roof bars as I started down towards the west coast.

The trouble is that you have bypassed even more beutiful areas in Aotearoa and I can't believe that such an experienced camper as yourself could actually lose any of your gear! What were you thinking of at your last campsite? You can expect an awful lot of rain on the West Coast, the average annual ranifall at Haast is 9 metres - say about 30 feet,
