In April 2017 I left Australia for a solo trip around the world on a BMW F800GS. I named it “Are We There Yet” because I don't know my final destination or the duration of this journey.
Throughout my journey, I'm raising money for a young disabled child in Poland named Franek. Franek was diagnosed with cerebral palsy (weakness of the entire right side of the body) and he will require constant rehabilitation for the rest of his life. All the money raised will go directly to helping Franek and his family lead as normal a life as possible so please donate generously: gogetfunding.c...

So happy to see Skippers Canyon road from a Bikers point of view, last on that road was white water rafting down the shotover river ! The most exciting part was the minibus ride to get there, driven by a barefooted newzealander and towing a trailer what a road, well done and I like marmite with peanut butter also 👌

  • @FoxdaleTravels

You have some serious guts, riding that road. OK, at least you aren't in a car...
It is not just one of the scariest, it is still ranked the scariest and most dangerous in New Zealand. In fact, rental companies used to forbid you from driving on it and most insurances didn't cover your vehicle on Skippers Road.
It was built for the gold rush and it's crazy to imagine all the wagons coming in and out of there with gold a way back then.
There is a video on my channel of Queenstown and Wakatipu region from 1954 (a tourist promotion video) and they show Skippers and discuss it a little.
If you are in NZ for much longer and have the chance... I recommend Dansey's Pass (make sure to stop in at St Bathans too) and the Hakataramea roads.

Nothing very dangerous about this road unless you do something stupid. Its a fantastic ride and well worth doing. I have done it to the end and camped out on a road bike twice. Most dangerous part is the traffic on a very narrow in places gravel road. My advice is leave after the tourist buses are finished for the day and get back out in the morning before it starts again.
