      @@takatamiyagawa5688 I put off watching that for years after having been disappointed with aspects of the LOTR adaptation and hearing many awful things about The Hobbit. I was obsessed with The Hobbit book since my earliest memories and had a cassette tape with the story on read by Martin Shaw which I literally wore out. I knew huge parts of the book (and all the songs) off by heart :D
      Imagine my surprise when I finally watched the extended versions of The Hobbit trilogy last year to find large amounts of the book adapted almost word-for-word onscreen, which is something that didn't happen in LOTR. I could predict much of the dialogue in scenes from the book because they were using a lot of dialogue originally written down by Tolkien. Whole scenes played out very closely to what happened in the book in the extended versions, including the song adaptations.
      If you take out all the added nonsense (I agree, there is too much of it which was also an issue in LOTR) you actually have a very faithful book adaptation, unlike LOTR which removed huge aspects of the original story to add their own nonsense version of events.
      I ended up showing my mum The Hobbit trilogy (who was a Tolkien fan decades before I was) and she also was shocked at how much closer to the book the adaptation is than LOTR was - based on what everyone said we expected an entirely made up story!!!
      I just ignore the nonsense parts of The Hobbit because it's amazing seeing entire chapters of a book I loved so much as a kid adapted faithfully onscreen. It's a shame the ridiculous stuff, and an over-reliance on CGI, put so many people off. But I do understand their feelings even if I don't agree. :)

    while the statement, that Sophia Nomvete would represent the first female dwarf is simply incorrect, there were female dwarfs in the Hobbit trilogy, she is the first black dwarf in a film about Tolkien and the first beardless dwarf in a film about Tolkien, she was not the first female dwarf in Tolkien's world, there were other female dwarfs in the actual lore.

    • @TheTwinklinglilstar

      I think your statement is also incorrect. There may have been female dwarves in the trilogy but were their parts major? • @apollomars1678
      @apollomars1678 Год назад +4

      @@TheTwinklinglilstar it would be interesting, if she knew, that dwarf races of Tolkien were based on 7 old Slavic tribes, who got extinct in the expanse of Christian believe in eastern Europa, so they got colonised and Christianised to cultural death, comparable to experience of many African cultures prior to colonialism and her own Jamaican ancestors. The policy of diversity of Amazon is based on respect and it would disrespect this actress to use her skin colour for fake-diversity, without realising the full potential of her identity and her own cultural backstory with her role.
      In my view, it is disrespectful to her by Amazon to ignore these connections, because they don't really care about her need to understand dwarf culture and potential access to this culture by her own cultural history.
      female dwarf roles in the trilogy were never seen. they were seen in the Hobbit movies as citizens of dale and Erebor, refugees of Erebor in the attack and some other minor shots and as the remains of trapped victims of the dragons. Maybe they are not major for the actors, because they had no speaking roles (like most actors in these movies), but the significance of the trapped victims were quite huge for the plot of the second movie.
      In the books the role of female Dwarfs were even more significant. In the Battle of Azanulbizar, one of the 7 dwarf tribes were lead by a dwarf woman. This tribe is famous for their thick black dwarf beards (including her beard)

He was not trying to transmit a message that spoke to contemporary politics. He wanted to create a mythos that was timeless, and would be applicable - that was his word, 'applicable' - the applicability across times. Every single choice we’ve made at every turn of making this show has been to be faithful to that aspiration, because that’s what we want as viewers. We don’t want to adapt the material in a way that might feel dated. We aspire to being timeless. That’s why these books still speak to people so much, because so much of what’s in them has not aged a day. And we aspire to do the same thing. And I think we feel that once people see the show, and see what the stories and characters and worlds are in context, they’ll feel the same way."

Medieval Europe and England specifically was more diverse than Tolkien himself was probably aware of at the time he was writing, but as we learn more about that time period ourselves, shouldn't we aim to more accurately depict it if that is or was Tolkien's intention?

I said it was more diverse than Tolkien was likely aware of, which I believe to be true given that archeology is a field in which we are constantly gaining new information and much has been discovered in just the past decade or two decades. As for why Disa, a Dwarven princess, is Black (since that appears to be at the heart of your argument), I'm once again going to point out that Dwarves are an entirely fictitious people of whom we've seen very very little in Tolkien's written works. Most of what we know regards the clan of the Longbeards, Durin's folk, and we know virtually nothing about the other clans who lived in the west, east, and north of Middle-earth (or whether there were marriages between members of these clans; we don't actually know if Disa is from Khazad-dûm originally).

      also weirdly they didn't go to any effort to make her look like a dwarf. she just looks like a human sitting amongst dwarf men. the men all have prosthetics etc to make them noticeably a race separate from humans, but Disa just looks like a human with a ginourmous wig on :o

    • @Vexarax

      I think the issue many people have is that Tolkien explicitly and repeatedly stated that elves don't show signs of age the way humans do. Even late into the Third Age, Galadriel and Elrond still have youthful faces, their age is only shown in their eyes. Elves do eventually begin to fade, as the fire of their spirit consumes their body - but it takes thousands upon thousands of years (ie Cidran at the end of the Third Age was nearing the end of his final cycle - he's one of the eldest elves alive by that point).
      However, there have never really been _entirely_ accurate adaptations of Tolkien's elves - they sort of always look too "human" even though a little CGI could fix those issues (like in the movie Bright - you could tell the elves aren't quite human due to how light falls on their skin and they have a kind of bizarre ethereal beauty - which is how Tolkien described his elves!)
      Nothing against the actor himself though, he seems like a great actor! I'm just explaining the lore reasons why many take issue with his casting - there is no way for his character to be old enough to show any signs of aging even if elves did show signs of aging! He's around the same age as Galadriel and they used a very young-looking actress for her :o

    • @aesir1ases64
      @aesir1ases64 Год назад +1

      Agreed, I guess we will have to simply accept this issue regarding Celebrimbor aging and appearant oldness when he should be much younger, but PJ movies changed many stuff including physical traits from the likes of Aragorn, but the story was beautiful and the acting of Viggo so great that we actually end up loving the character, even if its different from the books.
      Here is hoping Celebrimbor's The Rings of Power will follow the same fate, this actor is held in high standards by a lot, lets hope the script and directing helps him.

      He just doesn't look like an elf. Again, I am not saying he will be horrible, maybe I end up liking him the most, but the whole design around him doesn't look elvish to me. Elves all have long hair and they are immortal, therefore they all look young. Galadriel is older than Celebrimbor, yet she truly looks much younger than him. Elves can 'look' older when they are sick or depressed, but it says nowhere that it was the case with Celebrimbor. We will see when the episodes start, but so far, he looks more like a senator from Star Wars than an elf.

    • @Flash4ML
      @Flash4ML Год назад +1

      @@stefankrunic8188 I agree that in what we have so far he looks fairly old, but if that is reinforced in the actual show, I believe there will be a reason for that, things like that aren't just aesthetic choices. He may be portrayed as older to eliminate the possibility of he and Galadriel being a thing, maybe he's taking the older role to allow Elrond to take up the more youthful elvish part, there are many possibilities.
      As for elves having long hair, I think that was probably Tolkien's overarching vision for them but it doesn't strike me as a drastic change for the elves of this show to have more contemporary styles, and I personally don't mind it. It's very easy to get narrow and close-minded about simple things like that, having an open mind about adaptation just makes things more enjoyable in general.
      I think "they are immortal, therefore they all look young," is one such narrow mindset. Why? Why would they all look young? Even if that was explicitly supported by the texts, I would 100% be willing to part with it for the sake of a more coherent show, imagine how hard it would be to create social dynamics between elves if they all looked the exact same age. You're not looking at this practically, from the pov of someone who has to make a good show. Without age how are you supposed to portray the relationship between characters without dumping a bunch of exposition about their backgrounds?

    Reading this comments section, all I can say is it's amazing how an entirely imaginary world can have the most unimaginative fans I've ever seen. How boring it must be, being able to enjoy a fantasy world only if people of color are completely nonexistent within it. Sadly for you, times change; I think perhaps Tolkien might have acknowledged that somewhere or other in his works?

    • @Vexarax
      @Vexarax Год назад +2

      The fans who are solely complaining about skin colour seem to be trolling, some of them haven't even read the source material (there's a channel making repeated videos complaining about coloured cast members but they haven't read the books). It makes genuine fans, who are unhappy for genuine reasons, look bad.
      But the reason many of the rest of us are unhappy is because we _do_ have imaginations, and also have immense love and respect for Tolkien's world.
      So when we see the utter lack of imagination and utter lack of respect that's gone into this based on everything the showrunners and cast keep saying, it genuinely hurts. Hence the immense backlash Amazon is experiencing.
      A huge budget and great special effects can't make up for the butchery of an amazing body of work.

      Diversity is not so much the issue but that the actors seem to keep hinting at the injection of modern day politics which has people reeling. Using Tolkiens base as a platform for pushing a political agenda just to protect the amazon brand is going to ruin this show depending on how far they went with it. I do want the show to succeed but I do have some big reservations.
