  • Energy bills are set to go up by more than £800 this autumn - as the regulator warned that the price cap is likely to hit £2,800 in October.
    (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
Ofgem's boss described soaring gas prices as a "once in a generation event" - made even more acute by Russia's war in Ukraine.
Campaigners say - millions more people will be thrust into what is known as “fuel stress” - forced to choose between paying for food or heating their homes.

Yet again the Tories are blaming the Ukraine war as an excuse. All this started way before the war, also the UK import only 5% of gas from Russia so that excuse doesn't wash I'm afraid.

The cost of living dilemma seems to be a global issue, yet it has gotten worse in the UK due to the rise in the cost of many commodities. The government, in my opinion, has the power to lower electricity prices, but for some reason, I don't think they are worried about what the average person would do in these strangely difficult circumstances.

Energy production should be a priority for the government. Instead, the Tories sold it all off under the guise of privatisation and now we have a cartel extorting the British people. The government also cut funding for renewables and took us out of the EU where we had cheaper prices as part of a trading block. This is a serious situation that has been allowed to happen by our reliance on other nations to meet much of our energy needs. Completely avoidable if we were self-sufficient in energy...

Tories have been trying to increase energy production for a long time while while labour have been saying end fracking and gas production. In the last vote, nearly all Labour mps voted for banning fracking and a few didn't bother voting and only one voted against. Labour wanted us to import all our gas and oil from abroad which would've increased the cost even more

This winter I suggest to gather few sets of the following:
      - 2 flower pots (one larger than the other)
      - steel rod which is about 30 cm in length which could have screwed on nuts.
      - pack of bolt nuts
      - flower pot dish
      - cheap candles
If you search flowerpot heaters, you will see what they look like. Heat from the candles (which are positioned at the lower end of that rod, which generates heat. This is then stored inside the numerous metal nuts and the rod, which is then transferred to the internal pot. Slowly but steadily, that heat is then dissipated in a small room. Perfect for small room DIY heaters which will cost you so much less. Pair that with an oodie for cold days, fluffy socks and a hot water bottle. Some people heat on gas, some on electrics some have additional wood burners and some still heat on oil.

Scrap the standing charges to promote energy saving. Low users get stung by high charges despite using less energy. Current electricity standing charges are now around 50p a day which is ridiculous especially as we're currently in lower use months, no wonder the companies are making huge profits, they are getting paid for supplying nothing in many cases. Gas is more reasonable compared to electricity but still high. I rarely use Gas so paying c30p a day is a joke. I'd get rid of it but have conflicting information on disconnection costs.

Now is the time to prepare for the winter costs. Tighten the belt, stop smoking/drinking, no more getting your nails or hair done, no hanging around pubs with friends, no concerts, no buying unless it's a need. Buy and stock up on foods that are on sale. Buy bulk and share the cost with a friend. Get used to wearing sweaters and socks on cooler days instead of hiking up the heat. Use car gas sparingly, and no last minute dashes to the corner store for a nightly treat. Reduce subscriptions, pay for minimal tv and internet. You have to start somewhere, and now is the time. It's going to be a tough winter to get through.

Not true. Germany pays more for energy than anyone. The ‘cap’ is not what you have to pay. The media love to stoke up these stories. You only pay for what you use. Yes, there are many many genuine cases, but most will get by with rationing energy and turning down the heat and turning off appliances. I have turned my boiler thermostat down to 50 degrees and the place is still warm, and that makes my condensing boiler work more efficiently anyway. I put on layers, just like people do in freezing countries. People need to get out walking in the fresh air and that will save money and keep them warm. And why are all these stories all about women with children, where are the men? Do these ladies have no husbands/partners? No family to help them out etc? I think the media are running a propaganda campaign.
Not to say though that there ARE many genuine situations and help should be given to them by all means. The rest including me - a 70 odd year old pensioner on a minimum income, we will survive if we use our common sense. Thanks for all the help the government are giving us!

In my house we already have stopped using Gas completely. We have to let go the Gas so we can just afford to keep the electricity going, its terrifying to think there's another price increase coming up, we may soon have to cook and clean over a campfire and that is the truth.

      @@ezeee595 That's a huge increase for you. I'd cry at £85.
Of course mine will increase in winter but right now in summer I use very little. No fridge to run as I go shopping twice a week and walk it, no t.v. by choice, no dishwasher, I have an electric cooker but don't cook a lot. I'd say my most expensive item is using the internet, if I use it 4 hours a day it's probably one kWh per day assuming 250 Watts. I did last year but decided to cut down now.
After typing that it went down to £31 per month. Now because last month I used £31.93 they have upped my direct debit to £42 per month even though they have £55 of my money in credit. Why can't they use my credit to pay that extra 93 pence? Why bother staying in credit if it is no use, but they want us in credit. It's a rip off to get more money because they presumably get interest on it.
I'm considering a smart meter now, pay for what I use, BUT only if they can guarantee in writing it won't cause radio interference to my amateur radio equipment. If it does I also want it in writing they will remove it free of charge and give me back my old meter.
      They won't of course.

The people cannot increase their income by appointing a non indipendent Parliamentary commission that increases wages and incomes like the Members of Parliament do every year! This govern has put a crippling tax on petrol but is very fearful of stepping on the toes of energy companies that have made an extraordinary amount of earning this year. A perfect receipe for losing votes.

i keep seeing all these videos about heating costs from here in the US and all I wonder is why it is so hard to invest in green energy to heat homes using electricity rather than relying entirely on oil and gas. Seems like the government doesn't offer any kind of incentives to get people to invest.

    • @zuzol735

I do appreciate that many people are struggling but maybe the current situation is a wake up call for some. Example; man interviewed on tv said that he had to stop his wife from opening the windows and turning on the heating in order to dry the washing! Then he told us that the family now showered instead of bathing, and that his three sons used to lie in the bath for an hour with the hot water running constantly!
Two old biddies couldn't use the tumble dryer now and had to peg out the washing - why could they not have always used the line!?
One other woman stated that she quite often stayed in bed, but she did have three dogs and a cat to keep her warm; how much does it cost to keep four animals?
How many others were wasteful in the past, contributors to climate change with their spendthrift ways?
    Thickos.

What is this CAP! There is no cap! Cap means a maximum amount you'll pay for something. THERE IS NO CAP.
It is purely a cap on the average price per unit charged based upon the AVERAGE home consumption. Therefore, as with all "averages" 50% of people will pay MORE than the cap, hence its not a cap at all! Lies lies and more lies. And this is nothing to do with Russia, this all started way before.
