Thanks for the tutorial, I was doing led for weathering but this is so much easier lol. It's my first time building a gundam model and I liked how weathered it looked on the box art so I wanted that look instead of it being clean.
Just a thought, on old planes and the airlines you see dark grease streaks matching the windflow. It would be cool to see some grease streaking back from different raised areas of the ship. Awesome video!
Holy smokes... It looks amazing after the wash. Great job!! I've been wanting to learn the shoe polish method... Thanks for the lesson and for making it look easy!!!!
Awesome tutorial! I just picked up a Legacy Collection AT-TE recently, and thought it was looking a little too clean for my tastes. Definitely going to use this video to help me weather that sucker up, thanks!
Nice! On my last build I ran out of the expensive was so I used brown polish and added a touch of black acrylic to darken it up a little and it worked great! 😀
Nice tutorial. I'll have to try shoe polish sometime. I usually use acrylic paint. Regarding those killer decals you made- if you use a laser printer (with laser waterslide decals), you won't have to clear coat them prior to placing them on with water and a bit of white glue mixed in. Just a different process because laser runs off toner instead of ink- but a very good one for details. Great if your work has a laser machine. There's even "Ghost ink" you can get to print in white now!
I use cheap pound shop kids black poster paint , paint it all over then wipe off , wait till it’s dry they spray clear varnish , looks amazing , all my Star Wars models have had this treatment
Same here, I dont like to water it down either and I like to use a brush sometimes to help move it a round a little easier. Shoe polish is a great alternative and a lot cheaper! 😃👍 Thanks for watching. Cheers.
I normally wipe it off right away but only dabbing it with a paper towel. But once dry you can also use the green scrub side of a damp sponge and lightly scrub away and excess.
I loved this video, and I have a similar sized millennium falcon, but no shoe polish. Do you have any alternates. For example would shear black paint work? I don’t exactly know we’re to go looking so if there are no alternatives I would like to know some stores were you bought that paint
You can make a wash with some black oil paint and some thinner there are also some great tutorials on RUclips that show how to make your own wash. I would be careful using just black acrylic print because it dries so fast and may be hard to get off. I normally use Citadel Nuln Oil black wash. If you have a hobby shop or a gamer shop (like a shop that sells Warhammer stuff) they normally carry that. You can also always find it online. My Hobby Lobby or Michelle’s don’t carry it unfortunately… Hope that helps. 😀
I don't... That was one of my first creations. Maybe I can do a "Some of my favorite toys" video with him in it. I threw the Halo guy in there for you! :)
Great video. I am thinking of doing this on a very small Bandai Millenium Falcon 001 and Star Destroyer 006 kit (both about 4 inches long). I don't plan to handle the models except for cleaning dust off occasionally so it ok to leave the shoe polish to dry but not use a top coat (like a flat coat)? Thanks for sharing
@@DRToysCreations I've just completed the Millenium Falcon today using your technique and it looks great! I had to figure out how much water to mix and because the kit is so small, it was a challenge wiping off with a paper towel. But in the end, using some water on the paper towel for certain areas and using a brush with water helped to get the right amount of weathering. Thanks again man!
@@sulimc Glad to hear it! On the next one maybe use and old rag, the paper towels tend to tear and can be a pain... I have also used the green scrubby side of an old sponge and that works really nice. Keep making awesome stuff! 😀
No, not necessarily, just a cheaper alternative. I typically use Citadel Nuln Oil @ $7 for 0.81oz vs Kiwi Shoe Polish @ $3 for 2.5oz. It's a nice alternative and it works pretty great if you're newer to making and on a budget. This video was just to show how to weather a toy with something you may have around the house.
So Citadel Nuln oil is actually a water based wash. Used mostly on War Hammer figures and things like that. I actually really like using it... I've never really done the oil and thinner wash but I'm guessing that works pretty good as well.
Hey bro have you seen the new Marvel Legends movie figures for Deadpool and Wolverine? I have both of them mint on card, and I want to bust them open and try this, but I have never customized a marvel legend before, and I’m nervous because they’re sold out everywhere. If I mess up, I feel like I can’t replace them. Any tips for this noob that are not in the video you may have 4 years later??
Yeah, I would say get a few cheaper figures even an action figure from the thrift store and do a few test runs to see how comfortable you feel on the success. I would also hunt around on YT maybe with the search terms “weathering an action figure”. You may find a few more tips. Good luck and I hope you have cool success!
Yeah, Depending on the final look I want I will do a gloss or matte topcoat to seal everything in. I've never really smelled the shoe polish. Thanks for watching.😀
Additional question, should I do this before or after applying the decals in Bandai? I hope to hear from since I would like to make my Millenium Falcon a little more realistic. Thanks!
Yes, you can totally do this on a plastic model kit. I like to put the decals on then do the wash over them because it ties the whole thing together. One thing I do is put a clear coat over the whole thing before doing the wash, that helps prevent you scrubbing the decals off. I would still be carful around the decals but it definitely helps.
Sorry to bother you again since this is my first time to ever weather or do something after building a kit and the Millennium Falcon is somewhat a holy grail for me haha! I've read that Tamiya Panel Line can cause damage and brittle Bandai plastic kit and I was thinking of doing the list below. 1. After building, apply decals. 2. Gloss top coat 3. Panel line with acrylic thinned with water, wipe excess but okay to leave some dirt for weathered look 4. Use tamiya weathering kit (soot and rust) 5. Then cover with flat coat Are the steps okay? I don't know how to paint so I'm not taking it as an option now but would very much like to paint the pilots and would probably start there using Vallejo colors
I just got some off eBay, I dont even see a brand on it (I got the cheapest one i could find and it worked fine). The trick is after you print your design you have to do 3-4 coats of a clear coat varnish otherwise they dont slide off that great. I just used Rustolium Clear Gloss. Hope that helps.
No because most of it is in the small cracks and crevasses. Another thing I will do sometimes that can help even more is do a Rustolium clear or matte coat over it and that helps seal it on.
@@nicklegostava Sorry, maybe I wasn't a clear as I should have been. You can do your weathering with the shoe polish first then once you are done you can get a clear varnish spray paint so it's pretty easy. Hope that helps.

You bet!
I thought at first, what a nutter..., but then I came to appreciate the ghetto paint. Great idea, Dave, thanks for the brief demo!
😅 sure thing!
Storm Trooper with the tattoos made me laugh, super creative!
😂 Thanks... That was one of my first creations.
thank u.. really a good trick.. i did it in my 1995 millennium falcon and it turned awesome.. thank u again 😆

The Falcon is so iconic, but without the weathering it has no story. Great video!

I'm sure you got it from Goodwill too, Right? Because that's where All of this garbage ends up.
I've done this before, on this exact model in fact, it works really well.
Can't wait to do this to a few of my transformers figures. They have amazing panel lines that are just lost without a wash
Awesome video! Brand new to this, you just changed the look of everything I own. SO MUCH BETTER!!
Great to hear! 😀
I was just using the boot polish technique today on cheap toy army truck.

Did you wait for the wash to dry before removing, or did you wipe the excess off straight away after applying ?
