  • In this video, we show you how to make Chana Bateta East African Style. Chana (chickpeas) Bateta (potato) is a famous East African dish that is infused with a blend of wonderful spices. This is another recipe that my mum grew up eating in Tanzania and we often have this at home. This recipe uses black chickpeas (chana) which is very nutritious and really delicious too. Chana Bateta has a wonderful coconut gravy and we top it with sev, chevda or crisps and drizzle it with lemon juice before serving.
To make this Chana Bateta East African Style, you will need:
    2 tbs oil
1 tsp fenugreek seeds (methi seeds)
    1/2 tsp mustard seeds
    1 tbs curry leaves
1 tbs ginger & garlic paste
    1 tbs tomato puree
    2 green chilies
    salt to taste
    1/4 tsp turmeric powder
    1/2 tsp red chili powder
    1 & 1/2 tsp coriander powder
    1 tsp sugar
1 tin black chickpeas (chana) (if you do not have tinned chickpeas then soak the chickpeas overnight and boil as per packet instructions)
    4 medium-sized boiled potatoes (bateta)
1 tin coconut milk (add according to how much gravy you like, we added the full tin but you can add less if you wish)
Before serving the Chana Bateta, sprinkle with 1/2 tsp cumin powder, garnish with fresh coriander and squeeze some fresh lemon or lime juice on top.
Our family enjoys sprinkling some sev, chevda and crisps on the Chana Bateta (this is the East African way to enjoy this spectacular dish). The Chana Bateta has beautiful spices and is the perfect combination of dishes from East Africa and the Indian subcontinent. Chana Bateta is very famous in Tanzania and Kenya, and definitely a family favourite in our household.
We hope you have seen how easy it is to make this East African Style Chana (black chickpeas) Bateta (potatoes) in Coconut Milk. It is absolutely delicious and we know our friends and viewers from Tanzania and Kenya will know exactly what we mean when we say it's absolutely delicious comfort food!

We have a vitumbua recipe here: ruclips.net/video/s4MzVsFViP8/видео.html
This recipe it to make them without a vitumbua pan (since we didn't have one), but as soon as we can source one we will make them again. The recipe is identical though, and you can make them the round shape if you have the pan or a rounded vessel. The taste is phenomenal - my family and I love them!

Hey Don! How are you? Thank you for posting such yummy recipes. My hubby TKhamisa (Perth) cooks most of your recipes and each one of the recipes we have tried is delicious! I wanted to request you to share your samosa chaat recipe (by default i assume you have one hidden somewhere!) I've got a small ladies party early december and would love to make it your style. Look forward to it!

Hello, ahh yes I remember the wonderful comments and request by your hubby. That's so lovely to hear that you're enjoying our recipes. Did you watch the Mbaazi recipe that we made? Hope you got a chance to try it out as we absolutely enjoyed having that at home. We don't have a samosa chaat recipe on our channel yet, but we do have the best samosa recipe ever that my mum makes (I may be a little biased but I truly believe they're the best haha). You can find them here: ruclips.net/video/gnpg3bmDFoI/видео.html
Samosa chaat sounds great and we're definitely up for a creating a recipe video for you (including the samosa part as this will be a different style of samosa to the one on our channel). We also will be showcasing some party dishes soon too. Give my regards to your hubby and stay tuned for the Samosa chaat recipe. Have a great day!
