I really like the little every-project tool caddy on the French cleats. I'd have the brackets cut diagonally for strength rather than that hard internal corner, but the rest of it is brilliant.
Hi Mark, Every thing that's needed it's there, this is more like a multi multi workbench or a production line on a bench, your ideas are never ending and there is a place on the bench for it . built in dust extraction built in power supply, there is no other bench like this one and you should be proud of it. As always like your ideas and thoughts and plans it just work out. Great video, catch you soon Take care👍
Hi Shaun. Thank you as always for a lovely comment. I had a lot of fun with this build. The dust collection needs a slight tweak so I can add in a joint to have my hand tools possible going through the cyclone but for now it is working ok. Appreciate your support. Take care bud.
Brilliant! I just purchased a massive workbench from an estate sale that has no woodworking features except a large work surface. I’ll be referencing this and your other videos to build out my new space! Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
A UK t track alternative for cheapskates like me is the Good Home Thira curtain track from B & Q. I use it for lots of guide/clamp functions. Not as good as proper t track but good enough. Ikea Vidga track is very versatile as well.
Nice video. One difference with my cyclone dust extraction (which you might already have) is i put a pressure relief valve on the dust container. In my case, will stop the container collapsing, in your case, may stop some strain on your vacuum, if (sorry when) you get a blockage 😂
Hi Chris. Thank you. I had one on the barrel I used to use but have not fitted it across. I have to be honest, this vacuum will be replaced as soon as I have time and decide what to use instead. I think the cyclone to the table saw will work far better with a shop vac with more suck rather than this 100mm hose one. Would you believe, I had a blockage on day one. lol.
Especially love the dust collector drawer. Collect your sawdust for glue-ups and filling right there ❤👍 Empty into small containers and keep for custom colour fillers 😊
On your chip collection drawer, instead of a drawer, a hinged locking front with a weatherstrip seal would be a better choice. Then you can still have the tote and drawer behind the ‘vault’. I was a plumber that worked with a LOT of grease interceptors and they operate identically to a chip separator (grease floats and dense solids sink; septic tanks are similar.. don’t think about that) but both use fluid flow and require a closed (kinda) system to perform properly. Ideally it would help to spray the interior of the cavity of the box with flex seal or something as well as it should seal all the small holes as well as the long seams. I actually planned on making a very similar setup under a miter station with a hdpe water tank removed from an old camper (caravan) because it is perfectly sized and heat makes it shapable. My last bucket that went to a chip separator imploded because the sidewalls couldn’t take the force. My next one will be made with plywood and use a commercial cyclone on top, plastic catch bucket, and a hardware cloth screen over the outflow going to the vacuum
Love this idea. I have been scorching my head to try and make this work and you have just nailed it. Thankyou. Sounds like your future system will be spot on. I may need to look into a similar set up for the tools of the future that are not in the table. All good fun huh.
Thank you Alex. The box in box was a desperate attempt to solve the bottom drawer being too big. Turns out it is better than a small draw, far cleaner and forces me to empty it daily.
The ultimate workbench, looks like you've worked hard on it👍 17m30s a small dab of blue loctite on the thread of the screw that holds the end on and it will stop it unscrewing when winding the clamp in or out.
Nice video Mark, some great little additions. I’m a Benchdog UK fan - they have some great quality engineered tools and their dogs / fillers are spot on - glad you are supporting them - just awaiting a delivery today of the chamfer tool and 60 odd mft caps ….. happy new tool day! Still need to get the worktops laminated - thanks for the details you gave for laminate! One other tool I’d recommend for your T track / bench dog holes is the veiko clamps from Bangood - they work like your Matchfit clamps but ratchet tight and can be used on the top or sides of your bench a much cheaper version of the Festool clamps!
I love delivery day. And you are welcome on the laminate info. It is nice to promote a good product just because it is that not for any kind of kick back. Same with bench dogs UK. I am planning a purchase from bang good so I will take a look. Thankyou for the recommendation.
Hi Mark,Some really useful and inspiring tips in there.the butcher block! I am gonna definitely incorporate it!..Can't wait to see the next one,,, re-Bob-uk...
@@startmaking1 all is well, how your have a good week. Oh I'm recording it... With out a script or locked down plan on how the video is going to go .... So I'm recording way too much 😂. And you know the time that add to a project. 😅
I see we employ the same techniques. I also try to record at least a day of footage without plugging the mic in. That's a fun way to torture yourself. lol.
Nice innovative bench. It will be interesting to see how you upgrade and modify it in use. I’ve been using homemade bench setups for years. A couple have large overhang edges for clamping and for vertical holding, I clamp a strong right angle fence vertical at the top edge, and then clamp to the vertical overhanging the bench. I also use old fashioned screw clamps -clamped to the bench top. I still want to improve my bench top holding with minimum dog holes. All my shop built stuff has friendly edges to avoid splinters and snagging my hands. A couple of my tops are much thicker with 2½” space between 2 sheets of plywood. I use pullouts on that bench all the time.. The gap allows for 3 full length by 1½ wide strong pullouts. I use them to support temporary shelves, work pieces, or stand alone on the pullout itself with v-block profile or holes in them for drilling, dowel cutting, etc. - between the pullouts are 2 narrow drawers with my most used hand tools. |[]| (--+--) |[]| (--+--) |[]|
Thank you. I expect it will be constantly evolving. Like everything I guess. It sounds like you have been evolving your setup for a good while. It sounds really user friendly.
YES., This is my opinion too. I have really struggled since building the bench. And also with just rough sawing a small piece of wood. I have no room for error. Then I did the butchers block and all is well in my world. lol. I now need to build a bench hook and a shooting board. Basically anything that stops me ruining the top.
Thank you Mark, picked up some useful and space saving tips from this… 👏🏻 Great workbench and well thought through to suit your use, thanks for sharing your work… 👍🏻
Great list Mark. Thanks for sharing. I especially like your portable cleats that fit onto your bench. Great idea for anyone that’s invested the time to build out a french cleat wall (like I did). Irony, I build workbenches for a living. Do you think I have a workbench? Nope, just a slab of ply that clamps on top of my table saw & both wings. My track saw table doubles as an assembly table. If I ever build a workbench for myself, I intend to copy large portions of this video. I agree with/ your praise for the Matchfit dovetail clamps. Since buying these clamps I stopped buying T-track.
Wow. I am surprised you have not built a bench. Though, I sell skiing holidays for my full time job and have not managed to get away in 8 years so I guess it is kind of similar. I appreciate that there are some things that you would incorporate from mine, gives me the confidence that I made some good choices. Thank you.
Nice overview Mark. Happy Easter to you and the family. Still don't have a roof over my work area, so it'll awhile yet. Thanks for all you do here. Take care & stay safe.
I've been thinking about possibly putting some bench dogs in my bench. I've also been thinking about a sacrificial worktop. Looks like I might have a little project coming up for myself 🤔
Both are good ideas. Mine is a little too permanent hence the butchers block. I will be cross if I gouge this top in the next few months. Let's see how long it lasts.
I feel the same about my bench top. I find myself clamping wood to the edge of my worktop just to avoid marking it. Time to use up some of my pallet wood👍👍
What an amazing bench Mack I’m just in the process of looking for ideas to build myself a workbench like this with the same table saw and storage underneath. So thank you for sharing so many great and amazing ideas that will be such a great help in my bench and help with making projects so thank you for sharing Mark . Love how the new shop is looking and turning out congrats 🎉
Thanks Jim. I was surprised at how doable the bench build was if I am honest. Really user friendly. And now I have it, I wonder how I managed on the cabinet I was using for so long. Now on to the next build.
Great video! I have a lot of the same work holding tools. I haven't pick up the dovetail clamps yet but I'm sure I will some day. My next adventure in work holding is going to be making my own T track with a router bit set. If you like the ratchet clamp style but want something a little nicer take a look at the Lee valley quick release wonder dog. It's not cheap but it works quite well!
The dovetails clamps are genuinely my favourite. Believe it or not I was considering routing the table top. Went for the butchers block instead. I saw stumpy nubs do the home made t track. It looks cool. That said, Ali express has some at a very good price to get you started if not. I am hearing a lot about quick release wonder dogs. I will have to take a look. they sound great.
Yup well good as always👍 I start foundations this week….. I was a bit cheeky,,,, went to IKEA said I had problems with some popups On some cupboards ,,,, they gave me 10 for free.🤓 Have a good un mate.
For your dust extraction draw, why not make a lever cam lock that will vertically lift the dust catcher up and seal against the bench under the cyclone. It would be much easier to remove and also make for a higher efficiency seal for no loss of suction much easier to seal around the edges if it hasnt got to slide, only drop up and down? Just a thought.
I love this idea. I will be tweaking as the weeks pass and will probably do a dust extraction video all together once I have decided on a system. Thank you.
As always another brilliant video!! You put a lot of thought into your workbench and for that I say thank you. Love your content and very informative. Can't wait to see the next one, until then keep up the great work! Happy building!!!😁
Brilliant bench! You've made huge leaps in your craftsmanship in a very short time. Bravo! Very nice work! How much fun is it to go from concept to completion and it works the way you envisioned? This video should have been done around Christmas, because you look like a kid under the tree. I know you have your portable Moxon vise; but you may be well served to put a face vise on one end of that beautiful bench. Though your solution seems to provide the same purpose. I guess I'm just old. Ironically, I just rearranged the first bookcase I ever made to be mounted as a cabinet vertically, rather than its original horizontal bookcase orientation. I say this because I found without making drawers, I would have had a ton of wasted space. I re-used some of the drawers I had made for something else and constructed a few more. I made doors for the middle section and will store some cordless tools and supplies there. I'll use the top three open spaces as shelving, or storing scrap wood.
Thank you Meat. It really is like Christmas in the workshop. To the extent that I am keeping the bench way too clean. You are spot on about the vise. The more I use the bench, the more I realise that in the end I will need something. That use of a book case sounds like my kind of job. Great repurposing. Not long until I need to move on to more storage. You seem to never have quite enough. Not a bad problem to have I guess, means I have a lot of toys. Take it easy bud.
@@startmaking1Enjoy the shop, it looks splendid; you did a really good job. i find I make small changes each spring and then find out what the shop still lacks. I got a real, by goodness, dust collector last Monday and will put it together this weekend. Maybe, after 30 years of sucking down dust, I may have less phlegm each morning. Getting more toys is a good problem.
@@startmaking1 got it together, but didn't realize that we'd have to purchase the step-downs separately. They'll be here in two days. Thank goodness for my son, he had the patience to put together all those little bolts, washers and nuts.
Awesome build, awesome video 👌 You got my sub off the workbench videos alone. Lol Well done, sir👍 I'm excited to dig into your channel. Thank you for taking the time to do what you do!
For clamping with the bench dogs Veritas make a quick-release wonder dog which means you don't need to fiddle with twisting it against the work surface to tighten it down or needing to screw it a lot to get it into the ballpark of where you need it. It just slides to where you want it then pull a leaver to lock it down and tighten it up. Far nicer to work with.
Hi Mark. Just found your channel after doing a search for a 10 x 8 workshop, just bought one. You did well with yours getting great videos out of a small space. Your new workshop and centre table are A1. May I ask if you have a link to the flexible hose your using for your extraction. Not been able to find one as flexible as yours. Now back watching your videos. Many thanks Dave.
Hi. Thank you so much. I dont have a link but I bought the flexible clear hose from Axminster tools. I think it is 50mm. I have a black cen tec one that I use for power tools but I think you mean the clear one under the work bench. It is a bit of a stretch on the cyclone fittings but it does go on. I have held it with jubilee clips.
I haven't built my bench yet but when I do it won't have most of these things for one simple reason. Unlike your flight deck all I will have is a destroyer's helipad. As for the dovetail slots I can't afford a bass much less a tenor, well Ok I can ...but hey. BTW if you simply made a large drawer where your cyclone and drawer are the dust would have fallen out of suspension all by itself as there wouldn't be enough speed to carry it. Instead of a drawer a roll away box. You did convince me to put T track on the sides. if nothing else it will be handy for clamping the extra sander hose.
This is what I love about work bench builds. No two should really be the same. We all have such different needs and starting points. I think you are right about the dust. But it worries me how much dust will float around the shop as a result. Though it is not as fine as sanding dust I guess. Interesting point. Thank you
Some great ideas. Don't think I could live with the clamp threads sticking out of the sides of the bench - I wouldn't bother removing them and my thighs would look like a battlefield in no time! If you put a plain steel slug in the wooden bench dog and get a decent magnet the magnet would still pull the dog but solves the dog sticking to tools problem ...
You re spot on I ripped my jeans 2 days ago. I will cut them flush as the knobs dont need to be very loose to move the cleat. Now I need a solution to the threaded bars on the moxon vise as that has cost me way too many shirts. Great advice on the bench dogs. So simple and yet I didnt even consider it. Brilliant.
Thanks for another great video 🤓 Nice to see you have build many of the features into your workbench, that I am thinking of too😅 Clever solution with the dustbox inside the the drawer. A tip could be to look at Hooked on Wood to see a good solution for sealing the dustbox with foamtubes (made for insulating heatingpipes), I Think this will seal the box for you🤓🤓 then you dont have to seal the drawer. I am planing for a similar solution.
Mark, great video and ideas. Always enjoy your creativity. 👍👍 One suggestion ( nothing new there 🙄🙄), your camera should be in a sealed container. Fine dust will still get into that drawer. Cheers. 😁✌🖖
Yes, you are so right. this camera is probably beyond help as the lens is already broken and the camera is full of dust . but the next one will be sealed tight. Thank you bud.
M8 bravo 👏👏 that looks amazing now u just need take some that nice wood a sent ya and get building. Ive also more bench dogs to send ya. Axminster sell a t slot cutter router bit that’s the right size for track saw clamps. It’s a cheaper more versatile option than buying into the match fit system imo
@neilwightman that is strange. I did have a few sound issues and so it is lower than other videos I have done but only by 20% or so. Do you have the yt volume up high too

On your chip collection drawer, instead of a drawer, a hinged locking front with a weatherstrip seal would be a better choice. Then you can still have the tote and drawer behind the ‘vault’.
Yes Meat. That is a good choice bud. I hope it works well and isnt too frustrating to put together.
@@startmaking1 got it together, but didn't realize that we'd have to purchase the step-downs separately. They'll be here in two days. Thank goodness for my son, he had the patience to put together all those little bolts, washers and nuts.
Some great ideas there Thankyou for sharing.
Thank you very much.
Awesome build, awesome video 👌 You got my sub off the workbench videos alone. Lol Well done, sir👍 I'm excited to dig into your channel. Thank you for taking the time to do what you do!
Thank you very much. And thank you for coming aboard. Hope you find something helpful.
Sooo much great advice and tips. Love it.
Thank you so much.
They sound perfect. I saw some from Bessey that I liked the look of too. Far better than the screw ones. Thank you
I have held it with jubilee clips.
with your wooden doghole plugs, glue a washer or bit of metal inside. the magnet will still pick them up, they wont stick to your square.
Cracking idea. Thank you. It's the simple solutions that I miss so often.
Inspiring mate. Well done !!
THank you again Scott.
Thanks for another great video. Love your content brother
Thank you very much.
Thank you
Back for a 2nd look with note book in hand to "steal" many ideas.
Wow, dont hesitate to msg if you have any specific questions.
Brilliant.
Very cool ideas Mark.
Thank you very much Ian.
Thanks for another great video 🤓
Nice to see you have build many of the features into your workbench, that I am thinking of too😅
Clever solution with the dustbox inside the the drawer. A tip could be to look at Hooked on Wood to see a good solution for sealing the dustbox with foamtubes (made for insulating heatingpipes), I Think this will seal the box for you🤓🤓 then you dont have to seal the drawer. I am planing for a similar solution.
I will check his video out now. I love his workshop improvement videos. Thank you.
Nice ideas there dude. 👌
Thank you very much.
Well done 👏
Thank you so much. I really appreciate it.
Great content and descriptions
Thank you very much. I really appreciate it.
Mark, great video and ideas. Always enjoy your creativity. 👍👍
One suggestion ( nothing new there 🙄🙄), your camera should
be in a sealed container. Fine dust will still get into that drawer.
Cheers. 😁✌🖖
Yes, you are so right. this camera is probably beyond help as the lens is already broken and the camera is full of dust . but the next one will be sealed tight. Thank you bud.
looks great.
Thank you very much.
M8 bravo 👏👏 that looks amazing now u just need take some that nice wood a sent ya and get building. Ive also more bench dogs to send ya. Love those upside down f clamps a got couple them the trend brand from Toolstation they was think 9 or ten quid for 2 and your right there awesome. See you went with the blade crown guard hows yours working. Mine gets in the way. Looks amazing though can't wait see you build on it. Also love the butcher block. Catch up soon. 🏴👍
Hey bud. Thank you. I will have to check out the trend brand as a comparison. as the micro jig ones are great but pricey.
@@startmaking1 your absaloutley welcome m8 proper awesome video. Ave only used them few times and not to there full use but they seem really good so far. Speak soon. 👍🏴
I wish you well on your tablesaw. but now our paths have diverged.
I knew that you would not be pleased Bruce, Sorry bud.
wonderful!
Thank you
Axminster sell a t slot cutter router bit that’s the right size for track saw clamps. It’s a cheaper more versatile option than buying into the match fit system imo
Brilliant. Thank you. I will check it out.
I hope Santa sends you a Veritas Quick-Release Wonder Dog.
Just taken a look. I really hope he does too. Not sure I have the patience though. They may turn up before lol.
Does not look very nice but it is nice 😂 very good ideas…
Thank you Chris.
Flipingecurs rkid I'll have 2 whach it 3 times to soke it all in 😂😂 as always mark belting video thanks👍
Thank you very much. Always appreciated.
oh yea - hook that vaccuum to the whole bench -make it a REVERSE AIR HOCKEY TABLE , all your dust and bits will get sucked into opened holes.
Now that would be amazing. Now I need to make it happen.
My workbench is the floor
Works well enough. And it is probably pretty flat.
@@startmaking1 lol i just got small area and not much room for a table so i need to come up with something
What about something foldable. I know that the channel workshop junkie did a foldable table saw stand.
@startmaking1 It's definately possible. I've thought about it. There is quiet a few options. I have some ideas. If I can get to it that'd be great 🤣🤣
why are 90% of woodworking youtubers bald
That is a good question.
volume too low
Have you tried turning it up
of course its on max,i have vatched over a dozen videoes on you tube to day and no issues with volume@@startmaking1
You got nothing else to complain about? Try the volume button or buy new equipment
Same for me and volume is on max. Strange.
@neilwightman that is strange. I did have a few sound issues and so it is lower than other videos I have done but only by 20% or so. Do you have the yt volume up high too
