- Released in October 1994, Uncle Pat was Ash’s third single from debut mini-album ‘Trailer’ and their second single to top the UK indie charts. Uncle Pat is probably best known for featuring in a Heineken TV advert.
The live footage used in the video was filmed the night Ash supported legendary Oxford shoegazers Ride at the Mandela Hall, Belfast.

My uncle Pat died today. This song always reminds me of walking along the beach at Shankill trying to catch my breath from all of the laughter and fun he brought. R.I.P Uncle Pat
had this CD as a teenager and blasted it repeatedly. Turned some friends onto the vibes as well... :,) this and Coasting are my favorites.
My Uncle named Pat just died as I've been getting into bands like these guys and found this song. Here's to Uncle Pat.
I set off this morning
Down the road along the river
Which I take but once a year
My walk will take me by the shore
Then inland for a mile or more
From the cold sea spray
A small wood stands upon the hill
An old house near it lies in ruins
Forgotten long ago
And here in a clearing,
overgrown with moss and ivy
Is your lonely grave
At dusk I will make my way
Along the lanes and through the fields
To where my cottage is
But before I step inside for bed
I'll look up at the stars as we had
All those years ago.
So here's for Uncle Pat.
Thank you
I just loved Trailer - still do!!! It's got all these gems such as this song!
I could really go for a Heineken right about now...
Made me think of the it too 😂

Love the whole feeling of this song. Sad and happy at the same time.
Heard that my uncle was going in to the hospital and thought of this, here's to your speedy recovery Uncle Pat!

You have no idea when you are in a family unit and you suddenly loose one. My daddy was the heart and soul of the family x ps I love your music fella xxx
Watched them live at 17 supporting Elastica, drank with them after, 2024 and still here x
Great souvenir from my teenage days.
I love this song. I saw "Kung Fu" on MTV in spring 1995 and went to my local record store (in Northern Germany, a small town) and was lucky to find a special edition of Trailer with an extra CD with "Kung Fu" and the B sides (among them the brilliant "Punk Boy" cover). I love the whole Trailer album, but "Uncle Pat" and "Petrol" I love the most. I just immediately connected to the feel of the songs. Only in recent years did I really read the lyrics though and google to find out the meaning.
If I had to name my three favourite Ash songs, it would probably be those two and "Shining Light". But well, there are so many good ones... And there is no need to choose. But this one: Goosebumps. Such a beautiful eulogy, whoever uncle Pat was.
Was at a festival in Cork Ireland to see Ash, was right up at the front and a waiting for them to come on , was chatting and messing around with a girl just to pass time, she asked me back to her tent, I told her I have had sex before but never seen Ash live, she cursed me out and left lol
I sang this at karaoke in Tokyo and realised the meaning of the song for the first Time and ended up a tearful mess...just so beautiful and poignant... sentimental in my old age..lol
Bits of the video are filmed within a mile or 2 of my house, and i've always had a soft spot for this song since I have an uncle Pat from (near) Downpatrick!

Heard Status Quo Picture of Matchstick Men on TV and was wrecking my brain trying figure what it sounded like 😂😂
"Uncle Pat" is probably best known for featuring in a Heineken TV advert"" - fuck off! Its influences are better than that shite beer's pop references. This song is part of the Trailer that (despite pre) post-"1977" shaped my taste in music beyond the oft linear, albeit thoughtful, music I'd had the privilage of hearing thus far. Tim Wheeler is a lyricist aspirational - you might get there in time. The band as a whole?Just enjoy.
@scaftag
Spot on lad , i rember da ad for da booze but the tunes tasted better ;)...
So you need to keep singing songs my friend xxx

I got a couple of parrots for company
I don't want sentimental bull. I would like a nice tune xxx
no disco!!!!!!
Ash really were one of the most exciting bands on the planet for a while... those first 6 singles in 94 and 96 were incredible. Shame by the time 1977 came out they were just meh.
1977 was every bit as good as trailer
Nuclear sounds was good. Also a life less ordinary single
Nobody should buy Android in future. Badvinvestment
