Turtles of any species are not a pet you just dive into owning and as a result are one of the most abandoned (when they get to big or become to hard to care for) and abused (because people don't fully understand their care requirements) pets in the trade.... as a turtle owner for over 21 years, I can say they are messy, can be smelly and require a lot of space and a lifelong commitment. Musk turtles are perhaps the smallest species in the hobby and therefore will be much easier to care for but please research research research before you decide a turtle is the right pet for you... and remember, they are very intelligent (studies have shown they exhibit a greater intelligence than the average house cat) and each has their own personality which will be up to you to figure out.

i dont want to be patronizing at all, you are a for more experienced fish keeper than myself but keeping turtles i have some experience in. the only thing i would like to bring light to in this video is the fact that a single adult musk turtle in my opinion should have no smaller than a 4ft aquarium. also it is strongly recommended not to get 2 musk turtles living together. aggression will become apparent once they become sexually mature and can result in them fighting and tearing limbs off one another. however i do love your videos and don't want to be that guy on the web.

I used to have two painted turtles. Bought a pair two decades back for $11 from China town (hardly an inch long). I named them Jeff and Julie. Julie dies when she was 5 years old. Some sort of infection. But, Jeff was with me for almost 12 years. I donated him with a heavy heart. He used to fight when I used to scrub his back with toothbrush and put cream once a month. He used to eat live fish and dry food like krill and algae sticks. They are fun to have but try to escape the terrarium if they can reach the top.

Only downside is they’re dirty and you need a good filter and lots of space as they grow. In three years I’ve gone through 3 aquariums getting bigger each size. They’re cool though. Was thinking we need to see some more of Timmy... I should be getting a baby Loggerhead Musk Turtle on 7th Jan. Currently, partway through the tank set-up, going to try a few plants in there with the hope that they won't be eaten or destroyed.

Turtles have a long lifespan, allot don't do well being cohabbed (it depends on the turtle), most get rather big, their care can be pricy, they need a big setup, they can be hard to care for, but they are an amazing animals, but most of the time they aren't cared for properly, they need UVB light, it has to be changed every six months, they need a good filter, a canister filter is suggested, it's best to have a larger enclosure, they have to have a basking sight, you can feed them pellet food, but not as a staple diet, they need a varied diet, you can't feed them goldfish, rosy red minnows, and you can't keep plecos with them, they all contain thiamine which gives them a vitamin B1 deficiency which will make them be in pain, the safety fish are livebearers. Turtles are absolutely amazing pets, but they are allot of work, and you need to do allot of research before getting one, and you have to care for them properly.

and water heater up to 28°c and sunning area up to 35/38°c 😉 a little addition to your text. but indeed they aren't easy animals. the cleaning is a real job and they are expensive with all they need. water heater, tank, filter (regular aqauria filter isn't suited as they pollute a lot including skin and shield) UV light and beach heater and every month they need 2/3 fresh water. variation of food from fish to veggies next to the turtle food people can buy in the petshops for turtles but only that isn't sufficient. I don't even give mine that turtle food. here they get dog food and veggies. is basically safe meat and vegetables and fruits. leaf vegetables though.

I would recommend a tank mate for Timmy, doesn't even have to be another turtle. I own a Yellow Belly Slider for the last 15 years she is quite large and I know that she was aggressive to other Turtles but left large fish alone.
I currently have a Large Honeycomb Pleco with my Yellow-Belly and they are a match made, the Pleco gives my YB enough stimulus in the tank without the territory fighting that I had when having other Turtles with her. Also the larger pleco's are quite tough fish and can deal with her.
I have video of the pleco latching on to my YB to clean her its quite funny.

I own a Red-eared Slider and an Amboina Box Turtle instead of a Musk and I must say that if people want to keep a bigger species like the Red-eared Slider, they should have a massive tank or an outdoor pond. The Red-eared Slider and the Amboina Box Turtle I have are kept in a fenced-in outdoor pond with a terrestrial area where they can haul out to bask on. I live in a country with a tropical climate so I need bot worry about winter and very low temperatures.

I definitely would NOT recommend getting a turtle! They can live at least 30, up to 50 yrs, some even longer.
Turtles are messy, so it is a lot of work, when they become bigger/mature.
They are not well being kept in an Aquarium on long term, better in some kind of Pond with no "glasswalls".
I kept 2 Chrysemis picta dorsalis, which is the smallest Species, in a 300L Tank for 18 yrs, til I found a better place for them to live.
