    On the ethnic/nations/nationality issue: EPRDF has used these differences as its basic strategy to control the populous at the expense of a national identity. As for the 2020 election, the question mark is how the ethnic dynamics will play out. We have a generation of middle aged men/women who have grown up listening to EPRDF's ethnic propaganda.

Ethiopia and we, Ethiopians, are known for squandering opportunities to democratize our nation in the past, because our politicians and the society at large are yet to learn compromises - give and take! I like this panel discussion about Ethiopian political system, Dr Abiy Ahimed gave so much transformation on many sides of his government, but ethnic political ideology is not good for Ethiopian transformation.so we Ethiopians expect more bright tomorrow from Dr. Abiy's ideology and good leadership.

    It’s true that Ethiopia is not a country. The people only unite when they are being invaded by outside forces. Other than that ethnic groups have been fighting each other since the beginning. People say the last 27 years were darkness but was their any civil war? No. Now theres the risk of civil war again

      blakbord1@gmail.com Bik I know ethiopian history. One of the earliest kingdoms to rise to power in the territory was the kingdom of D'mt in the 10th century BC, which established its capital at Yeha. The Aksumite Kingdom rose to power in the Tigray Region with its capital at Aksum and grew into a major power on the Red Sea, subjugating Yemen and Meroe and converting to Christianity in the early fourth century. Then it’s name changed too Abyssinia during the Ottoman conquest. the Oromo people were able to invade into the highlands, conquering the remains of the Adal Sultanate and pushing deep into Ethiopia.
      Ethiopia was reunified in 1855 under Tewodros II, beginning Ethiopia's modern history and his reign was followed by Yohannes IV who was killed in action in 1889. Under Menelik II he sold off the Tigrayan people too the Italians for money and weapons. Then which the Italians decided to betray the truce and invade. But they failed defeating an Italian invasion in 1896.
      Then Haile Selassie became the ruler around 1935 and decided too ignore the Tigray people and let them starve and die while the Italians invaded for the second time. Selassie failed and Ethiopia was under Italians occupation “mainly in the north”. The British helped and drove the Italians away.
      Ethiopia and Eritrea united in a federation, but when Haile Selassie ended the federation in 1961 and made Eritrea a province of Ethiopia, the 30-year Eritrean War of Independence broke out. Eritrea regained its independence after a referendum in 1993.
      Haile Selassie was overthrown in 1974 and the militaristic Derg Regime came to power. Then a civil war broke out but the Tigrayans defeated Mengistu in gorilla warfare with the help of Eritreans.
      This resulted in the establishment of the Federal Democratic Republic under Meles Zenawi. Ethiopia remains impoverished, but its economy has become one of the world's fastest-growing because of Meles leadership. People say that the last 27 years were darkness but the truth is that in those years there have been no civil wars other than the Eritrean conflicts.

    • @nebiatsisay
      @nebiatsisay 5 лет назад

      @@___AWFUL___ You said Selassie ignore Tigryan people. If you take your body for reference, and you experience a bacterial infection on your hand that affects function/ motion, will you say you ignored the hair follicles when shaving to avoid contamination or will you say you were forced to reduce damage and work toward recovery. A leader does not ignore regions he/she govern. That is why you were suggested to read the history. Will you say Meles ignored Tigryans when Eritreans bombed and killed residents of that region? That was forced.
      Those two leaders (meles & isayas) decided to split the country and rob its resources. Like thieves normally do. They agree to still but disagree to share what they took, hence broke the war.
      While I am at this comment, you said Ethiopia remains impoverished but the economy was strong?
      Webster dictionary says Impoverished means poor, reduced to poverty.
      If your agenda is to make Meles a superior than Haile Selasie, ask yourself this question? If Selasie was poor leader, do you think Meles inherited "84 countries" (quoting you) when he came to power?
      Know this history before making comments.

      Bellu Sisay my agenda was proof. So instead of spewing nonsense how about you show facts. Because he did, many leaders ignore and sell out the Tigray people, this is historically true. There would never be an Eritrea if menilik didn’t sell them to the Italians. Meles has done more for Ethiopia then the past two leaders combined and this is facts.

    • @nebiatsisay
      @nebiatsisay 5 лет назад

      @@___AWFUL___When you say your agenda is proof, you mean it is a proven phenomena that Tigreans were ignored by Haile Selassie and the subsequent leaders who came to power after his death?
      If that is what you meant, please share us your resources indicating these leaders deliberately ignore regions in which they administer. With out this important information, this argument will only be deemed as unproven and unfounded allegation that is used to advance once own agenda.

    We long more such institutes to engage in the crucial matter of peace throughout the world. Here in our case, the time of assignation was too late because of the U.S.A. have access, accordingly, this institute for peace should participate the people in order to get a succesful result. Finally, I would like to suggest my free idea, that the U.S.A. should look through her foreign policy to succeed in the objectives of such an institute.

    It is hard to believe these group of people simply have no idea what they were doing when they represented the US and they still have no idea - and they have "institute of peace" but they work knowingly or unknowingly to implement war. The guy who in their eye is very direct, Meles Zenawi, turned the once proud country into a North Korea. It began with the change of state ID cards to identify citizens by their ethnicity instead of their nationality for the first time in the country's history. To go with it, the country's map was redrawn and renamed by ethnicity. Schools had a new curriculum focused on how one etnic hurt the other - new history to divide and rule. The police was used to execute and terrorize people - having a police from a given ethnic group kill a citizen from another ethnic group to fuel hate. In the 2005 election, the opposition did not say they won't accept their seats but somehow knowingly or unknowingly these group of people think they did or are spewing propagand. Meles in the mean time became a multi billionaire controlling 50% of the economy with a VC fund they started for his ethnic group. This information can't be lost of these people, so what gives when the chickens have come home to roost? EPRDF ruled the country like North Korea - And the US was sleeping or knowingly ignored it? Why the hell do these people believe we should even listen to them?

    What impressed me most about this discussion is how well the Americans understand Ethiopia and the psyche of Ethiopians. The participants expressed objective views, without any bias or favour. One of the gentlemen articulated the main cause of the war between Ethiopia and Eritrea which is far different from the view held by the vast majority of us. Most of us thought or still think that the cause of the war was Badme. Their understanding and insight into the political situation in Ethiopia is so factual that it puts most of us to shame. It made me realise how little I knew about my country. I have been greatly enlightened by this highly stimulating discussion about Ethiopia.

Unless this issue is resolved, it will be difficult to achieve peace and stability in Ethiopia. Every ethnic tribe whether big or small should be proud of their identity, language, culture, etc. Ethiopia should celebrate its ethnic diversity as it will make it stronger not weaker.

    As a Somali from the ogaden region. You would consider me ethiopian and my land Ethiopia. But that couldn't be further from the truth. Ethiopia is an empire and empires can only be maintained by force and therefore Ethiopia cannot be a democracy. And it would've fallen apart long ago if not for western insistance on it existing. And that insistance has made the horn of Africa a constant warzone. Even if Ethiopia doesn't politically collapse just look at its economy and its debt and you'll realise it's close to economic collapse. The disintegration of Ethiopia is the biggest gift to the horn of Africa and I hope it happens soon.

      TPLF junta/clique based in Mekelle - Tigray are the ones who are hijacking the peace atmosphere, spoil the reform process, roughen Ethio-US relationship and incite ethnic clashes using the money they embezzled from the US and Western donated funds, their paid corrupt agents (based throughout Ethiopia), as well as China's encouragement. The TPLF wants African economy to be strongly tied with China and not the US and the West at large. For that favoritism, they have been getting corrupt funds from China continuously. So, the US, UK and EU should act fast for the speedy neutralization, elimination or even demise if they are to keep their strategic interest in the region by deterring China's secret connection with the TPLF junta/clique based in Mekelle - Tigray. 40% of the Tigrian population is still living on food donated by the US+West.

So the current system is not truly ethnic federalism it was just the manifestation of power and territorial expansion aspirations of certain groups with military power superiority at one time and their allies!
    2. Any federal system made without the establishment of democracy first is clearly nonsense and must have other ulterior motives. And as such will not prosper but fail fast.
    3. When a country has such a long history as Ethiopia things can not be smooth all the time. Eventually, we will figure out a way out of this mess! Maybe if we are lucky we get a strong outside enemy that will unite us in an instant :)
    4. The main problem was not ethnicity in the first place so ethnic federalism can not solve it. It lies elsewhere! But definitely, a good system that balances shared-rule with self-rule and embraces diversity across all parts of Ethiopia goes a long way! We really don't need regional silos though. The only ones who aspire and work tirelessly are the politicians that are looking to become the next dictator! And the people know this!
    5. Fun fact, article 62 of our current constitution assigns the power of interpreting itself (the law) to the house of the Federation (the equivalent of Congress). And to add more it almost entirely removes this house from the legislative role! Limiting shared rule seriously 🙈. And hence, one can call such a constitution ”session inducing” but the people know that also ;)

      What are you taking about? define “our own” governance and put a logical argument forward. That way we can reach to some understanding and maybe to some solution. However exterme is your idea, you can still put it forward if it has any logic in it! It doesn’t hurt to use your brain for a change ;)
