hello bob . if you go to horizontal hives .com they have the basic box and leg design . legs are cut at 30 1/2 inches and attached to box after you attach 2 x 4's around out side edges . the lower drawer design draw track rails are made from 2 x stock can be made as deep as you want. i ordered trays from amazon like they would use in a army mess hall but plastic . you cut a slot a little over 1/4 wide in each rail and test them so they can slide in and out and also a dado on the bottom of each rail for the 3/4 thick bottom of the drawer and i drill a hole and use wire mesh for additional vent . i also started installing peek roofs check out those builds
@@beebob1279 i had a bad turn in my health and have not been in the shop for over a year . i do have some of the track parts cut and could send you the info on length and how i set up the slots and any other problem you might run into . the peak roof is very easy to make i still have a template for both ends and the metal i used goes on similar to actual roof on house . one piece of metal on each side the one smaller cut covers the ridge cap area . i used stainless screws for sheet metal with the wide heads and used some silicone once i backed the screws all the way out and squeezed in the silicone and reset the screws , also a little tip , when you make the 2 x 4 frame for the lid ,.make it about 3/16 wider , gives you a drip edge so water does not run into box
Awesome features. Just wanted to know if you remove the drawers and TRAYS for hot summertime for better ventilation. Thanks so much. Very well built hive
Hi Ricky. if you open the drawer there is slide out trays, below those trays on bottom of draw is a 2 3/4 hole with wire mesh for additional ventilation on each drawer. those holes can be plugged using foam board thats 3/4 thick easy for winter time
Hope your health has improved and you back doing what you love in the shop. Have you resumed hive building? If so do you have any available for sale? , Bob
nice design , i have bee keepers in the family theyve done it for a living for decades, i bet theyd like this design , pitty SD doesnt live in Australia.
I'd live a step b y step build of one of these. This is so intimidating. Lol i want to build my own but a bed or bench so i can sit by em or lay on em. Idk maybe both lol.
There was so many additional features i did not mention in the video, ill have to make another video but here are a few more things i did. The lid has vents installed on both ends plus on one end is a bee escape in case a bee gets trapped in the lid area when closed. if you noticed in the video , you did not see a bee entrance. its on the back side, same side as hinges for the lid are. that way you are not standing in the flight path blocking the bee's. i have a design that lets you add temporary wheels to one ends of the Horizontal hive so it can be rolled into position instead of lifting and carrying. normal horizontal weight is around 90 pounds. this one design has much more weight. the frame holders on the far right are removable and can be stored in the lid area on clips. you can add additional foam sheets inside the Lid. on the bottom boards there is a cover that pivots to open or close those vents.
This is a nice design. Good accessories for frame holder and side table. I made a video for a horizontal design on youtube. It has some extra ideas. Just search these words "Horizontal long beehive design with option to stack 8-frame supers". Horizontal hives are the best to work with.
i have several different designs , and other videos, if you see the side i am standing at in the video, on the opposite side is entry ways for the bee's so you are not standing and working in there flight path
