Love the set up, Clean and simple.
i was waiting to see where the sharpening station was, you just showed us. i know that is hugely important to carving nd seeing how honed your carving axe is, you have some edge maintenance skills.
Thank you for taking the time to share this with us. I live in Oklahoma, so we have some similar extremities, I can see making a corner in the house for carving both healthy and beneficial.
Thank you for sharing this with us and thanks for sharing the info on the shave horse, spoon horse. I pulled it up as well. I love to build stuff, I have actually made a shave horse for the off grid cabin we have, its so heavy I just leave it there, but I am not there enough to actually use it much, so I need one here for the house. I have been tossing the idea of putting it on the front porch to help protect it from the weather, but your right that is goofy, if i wake up in the middle of the night, I can carve inside the house with what I already have on and it dont matter what the temps are outside. Thank you sir, have a blessed week.
    Keep up the fun videos.
PS, im new to carving, only carved a few spoons follow a few folks on instagram, so I am not familiar with your spoon trading buddies but maybe one day we will meet up.
Thanks again and have a blessed weekend.
    Dale

luketdrifter2100 absolutely! I’ve had several different arrangements for a carving area now and this current setup is by far my favorite!

Perfect workspace. I think some people get it in their heads they need a shop to do any wood crafts. I carved my kuksa and spoons in the kitchen. Watched a master kuksa carver in Sweden carve in his living room. Make the space. Nice video man, good inspiration.

Adirondack Wilderness Co thanks Leif. People are usually skeptical when I tell them I do all my carving in the house now. I figured it was time to dispel the myth that all of us spoon carvers are surrounded with chop saws and drill presses

I worked with a master carver who carved spoons, chains, etc while sitting in his recliner. All his “shavings” (nothing more than dust really) he just got with a hand vac when he was done

I asked about your workspace in an earlier video. I didn't see this video. Please disregard that question because this explains it all to me. That is a great workspace you've set up for yourself. Your right about having the carving tools out at the ready. I spent a fair amount on the hand knives and hook knives and I set them up where I can get at the? When needed. I am however thinking of moving the spoon finishing part inside my den until I can get the shop heating system installed. I have a shave horse that stays outside but it's been sealed and covered for the winter. I have a small spoon mule that attaches to my workbench and a log I use for roughing out the bowls and spoons. Have you tried making a bowl from a half of a log yet? Thanks, and you seem like a nice guy, sincere.

CrossGrain Wood Products,LTD thanks again for the comment! I do find it helpful to have the tools you use most at the ready as well as having things you love surrounding you. As far as bowl carving, I’ve carved a few bowls and kuksa in the past but I don’t enjoy it nearly as much as spoon carving so I tend to leave that type of work to the folks who know it best.

Very neat video on the carving area; I’ve been looking for a video on template making for spoons. I’d like get a system firm for spoon making so I thought making templates would help with consistency

For some reason, a few folks will try to shame you for using templates. I don’t see anything wrong with preplanned design. It leaves more time for actual carving and lets you spend less time fussing over details. As far as the tools to create designs- circle and oval templates can be of great help when used in conjunction with graph paper. I also utilize French curves to get the shapes I like. Once I perfect my design on paper, I transfer it to flexible plastic. Generally, I use plastic page dividers.

Great space! Wish mine was as attractive! Where did you get your spoon posters? I have a map of Ireland, incense and a shave horse too. Great minds think alike!

what a nice personal space. I'm beginner and I carve on the balcony in city flat.
please could you be so kind to show how do you make your templates?

    • @HuronSpoonCo

Григорий Ануфриев making templates is something that comes with experience. Bring someone who struggles with drawing, it’s not one of my favorite parts of spoon carving. I like to use graph paper and French curves. Once I’ve got a design drawn that I like, I tape a piece of clear plastic page protector (found in the office supplies section of any major grocery store.) I then retrace my design on the page protector, remove the tape, and cut the design out of the plastic. These hold up much better than cardboard or paper templates and it’s helpful to be able to see through them once you lay them on your billet because then you can see the grain or knots through the material and adjust accordingly. Hope this helps!
