So PHILIPS Made A Synthesizer And You Didn't Even know?

  • In 1986 I guess Philips decided to try and branch out into the synthesizer boom. The result seems to be this one of a kind FM groovebox walkman data synthesizer hybrid peculiarity!
And then I guess they gave up, hehe

I have one and it is charming little box - completely different from anything else. I love how imperfect it's envelopes behave - you can tap it very fast, and make totally different sound out of it. I'm thinking about MIDIfy mine. From what I have read, it's simple 2 Op FM, so you should be able to cut some data traces, make switches on those cuts, to block data flow of one of operators, and therefore creating new patches when changing presets. If I remember correctly there is pdf Service Manual somewhere over the internet which would help i guess. Now, waiting patiently for your modification :). Have a good luck!

It sounds exactly like Yamaha 2op FM, which would make sense since they owned all the patents at the time. What with the drums being on a separate channel than the melody, I suspect this is a Yamaha YM2143 OPLL (it sounds exactly like the one I have too), which was used in the Sega Master System and MSX2+ line of computers, so you should be able to find documentation on how to change it's 1 programmable instrument and use the built in drum set online easily. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yamaha_YM2413
You should be able to get really close sounds using the OPL2 chip found in the Adlib/Soundblaster era of cards, but without the janky cheap ladder-effect DAC this OPLL uses.
Since these chips were used in open platforms (such as MSX2+) there's official programmer's documentation. Also SMS programming forums will have information. Some of it will be translated from Japanese though, so YMMV.

I have one, it was my very first electronic music instrument. I can explain GLING / SUPERGLING. I think in supergling you are supposed to program your accompaniment and play the melody yourself, and it will quantize the melody to sound right with the chords. Pitch quantization in 1986 🙂
You can also program the melody and the chords both in the sequencer, in Pro mode I believe.
I think the device had some incredibly cool features: nowadays you are lucky if your synth can do more than 64 steps of sequencing but this thing does a lot longer than that. Nowadays the steps of sequences are usually of equal length (and you have to use tie’s to get longer notes) but this thing lets you set a duration for each sequence step separately, in addition to ties to make them even longer. Also: you can see the entered note on the display.
Unfortunately Philips decided after a short trial on the Dutch market that the device was not the direction the company should move in and they stopped with making music instruments.

Yamaha started as an instrument company then were approached by one of the big Japanese car manufacturers (not sure which one, I'm not a car guy) to help tune their motors and exhaust systems because they were know for how well they could tune instruments and they took off from there. (For a motor to work at peak performance there's literally a harmonic resonance they're looking for.)

Thats funny, because the CX5M sound modules had an, easy to fix but never done, bug in its' kernel in the built-in sequencer. So it seems Philips workaround for that was to add a tape recorder!
First time now i see the Philips thing, but it brings back a lot of good memories as well as frustrations on the CX5M.

Hey Simon! Actually, in NL in the 1950s Philips had a research lab where they were experimenting with electro-acoustic and electronic music and synthesizers.. you should check out Kid Baltan and NATLAB, his real name is Dick Raaymakers actually made big history in terms of the creation and development of electronic music and actually started a whole a study in The Hague which is now called ArtScience but when it started out they called Sound and Vision. Check it out, I am sure you will be very pleasantly surprised!

This work has been collected and re-released under the name Popular Electronics. Early Dutch electronic music from Philips Research Laboratories, 1956-1963. The sounds are YAMAHA OPL2 or OPL3 sounds from the YAMAHA PSS/PSR series keyboards of 1986. The drums are FM as are the sounds. Shame the keyboard is not very playable. I did see a Radio by Sharp that came with button keys and sounded similar. The Phillips is much nicer as it is LCD laden polyphonic FM arranger with a data cassette built in. Very nice find my friend!
