Some serious amounts of tax dollars are going towards some of these innovations. The robotic dogs are dumb. It reminds me a lot of NASA spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to figure out how to make a pen that can work in zero gravity, while the Soviets used a pencil.
Just FYI, the space pen thing is an urban legend. The pen was developed by and at the full expense of a private company simply as a gift for NASA. NASA did and still does use pencils in space.
