Story here: The first German soldier to die in Afghanistan was of Russian descent, his TPz got struck by an enemy RPG and he suffered a hole in his chest as big as a fist. His father, a part Volga German whose ancestors were deported to Kazakhstan, served in Afghanistan as well back when the soviet union still existed, in the last half year of the war. The thought that while some people make it home, some never see it again, their families will never see them again, and sometimes two close relatives can fight in the same war, but only one makes it out alive, and the other is not just scarred by the war itself, but also by the fact that he lost a loved one in that exact godforsaken place, that thought is just terrifying and deeply saddening.
