Love or hate the French, you have to admire the way they protest about things they don't like.

I was on that protest ride in Paris, somewhere near the middle - It was (expletive deleted) enormous! The photo is of Avenue Foch which leads to the Arc De Triomphe. It is about 1 km long and the whole length was packed with Motos 8 - 9 deep!
Some background: In France there is the Contrôle Technique (CT) for cars, vans and lorries. It is similar to the MOT but _every 2 years once the vehicle is 4 years old._ There was no CT for Motos (2, 3 and 4 wheeled powered cycles) and the official statistics proved that there was no need for a CT for Motos. 0.3% of all Motos involved in an accident would not have passed the CT. Yes, less than half a percent. Also from official figures, *30% of all Moto accidents* are caused by poor road surfaces, pot holes (nids des poules), lorry wheel tracks, tar snakes, sleeping policemen (dos-d'âne) etc. Which goes to prove that the problem is not the Motos but the government.
In France, whenever a garage mechanic services a Moto, they perform a check similar to the UK MOT (without emissions tests) as they are legally liable for the state of the Moto as it leaves the garage and bring any "problems" to your attention. So, usually, once a year each Moto is thoroughly checked (or, in my case, 3 times a year as I do about 18,000 miles a year on my Moto). On top of that, most Motards, motorcyclists, check their Motos at least weekly for the obvious (tyres, oil, lights etc.).
The CT was actually lobbied for by two companies looking for a way to increase their revenue - *_not as a vehicle safety issue_* and the government has acknowledged that it is not a vehicle safety issue! This has backfired on them as anyone who has both a car and a Moto now is boycotting those companies.
The _Fédération française des motards en colère (FFMC)_ has a page, in French (use Google Translate), about it (ffmc.asso.fr/controle-technique). They have even published a guide to boycotting the CT and the centres.

Gobs, I agree with this video and your opinion..
All though, I agree with the MOT. the French have a great counterargument.. If only we had the French enthusiasm..
The government loves to make these stupid laws that serve no purpose to the majority while ignoring the elephant in the room..
Tax, tax tax...makes.money while we suffer. I buckled my front wheel on a stupid pot hole.
Wait until the pay per mile comes in to effect.. Motorbikes also put out less emissions.so better for the environment, but we all know it has nothing to do with emissions, it has everything to do with
    Greed
    Restriction of movement
    Control (slavery)

in Texas we have vehicle inspections but our governor signed a bill last year to get rid of them starting next year; reason being a large percentage of inspection stations were not legitimately performing the inspections and just passing everybody that came through their shop, and just let law enforcement write the tickets for obvious defects. for motorcycles most of these shops have no idea what they are looking at. the last inspector that looked at my bike thought my rear brake pads were thin, on a brand new bike with barely 1000 miles on it. had to point out the line were the pad material stops and the backing plate starts (he thought all pads had to be dark in color). after that experience I was in favor of not having to take a couple of hours out of my day to go through this pointless task.

As a biker of 46 yrs I honestly believe the MOT is a nesscessity. Some people who ride bikes couldn't maintain a rollerskate never mind bikes(push or ice). It does come with the territory ANY vehicle user should have a basic knowledge of maintaining their own vehicle.
OR be able to take it to be maintained by a qualified mechanic / friend with experience of maintenance.
Good on the French for standing up for themselves but come on it's a check for your own personal safety AND it'll do the bike industry good to get that boost and influx of extra work !!!
    Right to protest 👍
    More safety for bikers 👍
Safe maintained bikes on the roads 👍

In France the figures say that 0.3 percent of accidents are caused by problems of maintenance or faults and I hear a great majority of that 0.3 percent are tire related. Maybe low pressure or even punctures are included. The control is every two years so may not even address faulty or worn tires.

MOT’s Vehicle Tax and Tax on petrol ere a revenue stream for the Government. So the question is where does the money go from MOT’s, vehicle Tax and Petrol go? Certainly not into the repair and upkeep of the roads. You are spot on with your comments, groups such as MAG and BMF are on the case with these issues. With regards to pot holes, if you are keeping a distance from the vehicle in front of you and looking well ahead then they are avoidable. That is a different topic which links into further training. Ride safe

Most of the US does not have one. We do fine. It was something that was trying to be passed back when I was taking Automotive Technology in college. It was good for our industry, but no one thought it was needed for safety. It never passed where I live. The fact is, if someone is driving with bad brakes, its because they have no choice. They will keep doing it because they still have to. This is rare anyway.

I know to a lot of us MOTs seem like a bureaucratic punishment, but if you see how many cars & bikes get failed on basic basic basic stuff due to clueless drivers/riders, you'll understand why it's the lesser evil in many cases.
That said, it has in recent years turned from a tool for ensuring road safety into a cudgel used to enforce compliance with increasingly arbitrary rules, so I appreciate the French's reluctance here, and frankly, I'd probably be out protesting alongside them if I lived there.
But the fact remains that there are quite a lot of careless, clueless drivers and riders, who don't particularly care why the front end sounds like the engine's about to fall off. Usually they'll throw an excuse like "Ah, don't worry m8, it's _always_ made that noise!". If it were up to me, I'd handle this through simple liability. You can have your car inspected by someone qualified to assume that liability, OR, when a wheel falls off and kills a child, you go straight to prison.
I'd handle insurance the same way. You can assume full legal liability for everything, OR you can pay someone else to do that for you. It's not mandatory to do the latter, but if you choose the former, you bear the full consequences for any collision/damage you cause.
This system will result in a bunch of stupid people doing a bunch of dumb sh!t for the first few years, and then once these people are in prison, everyone else will be forced to learn to act rationally about it.
As an added bonus, insurance companies won't have so much power over the market as they do now.

Government should worry more about crappy roads and potholes, which they do little about, since its in the biker`s interest to keep their bikes as safe as possible, after all, who`s neck is on the line for riding an unsafe bike?

i don't know enough about how it works in france, but if an MOT is only needed by choice it sounds like it will lead to big problems here in the uk. I hate all the potholes and how roads aint maintained, but unmaintained and unchecked bikes riding on them will surely make the safety of riders even more risky.

The idea that the merely being a member of the bike community means you will look after the roadworthiness of your bike is laughable, you only have to wander round a local bike night meet to see the massive difference in what people perceive as what level of maintenance is ok.
While the MOT failure rate for motorbikes is lower than cars, there are still plenty of them presented for test not only in an technically unroadworthy condition, but dangerous with brakes and tyres topping that category.

3:05 key point. It never feels like a democratic process. Might be a process but it is on route to an inevitable destination, in most cases irrespective of who we vote for since there is little rotation in the money that funds the lobbyist.
Always amazing to see so many riders unite and the French are often an great example of a pro union and pro democratic people, though they face the same corporate political landscape with its often global agendas.
6:33 taxation is theft when not spent correctly.
7:36 Business is incentivised not to do a good job but to do a job that leads to recurring business.
We see a race to the bottom in terms of production quality and a race to the top in terms of enforced customer retention policies.
If you think about it Government structural contractors are the godfathers of that business model.
    11:06 Bingo.
But you don't need transport (public or otherwise), just stay in doors. It's scary out there anyway right?
You'd certainly think so if never leave your comfort zone and just consume from news or eco chambers when forming opinions on your neighbours.
14:00 On to something we can directly effect, since riders don't help with this either.
Many often reinforcing the idea of how dangerous they are, in the same way as someone who jumps in to investing and gives away all their money without taking the time to learn, then quits and blames the market or the stock for their decisions to buy or sell in those moments.
We have riders who don't take time to learn, or take responsibility when something goes wrong. Who make rider errors and then teach that it's too dangerous to ride in the rain or over a leaf etc etc etc
We communicate the benefits in our eco chamber but can do a better job of promoting them outside the community, via events that welcome non riders and give a comparatively safe environment to explore the experience.
Wall of text, but you did ask.
    Always love

I understand when it comes to badly maintained roads and motorbike riders we are now to be blamed for any accident we have involving pot holes..
For instance if we hit a pot hole we are riding without due care and attention..
If we swerve to avoid a pot hole we are riding dangerously..
Just use road tax and M.O.T money to maintain the roads and stop passing the buck to road users..
    Stay safe people...

As a newer biker I don't mind spending £30 a year to have a trusted local professional look over my bike to make sure it's safe. One day when I've got loads of bike mechanical experience, sure, it'll be a burden perhaps, but right now I like that there is a standard set of criteria for an inspection that I can rely on for my safety.
Another benefit is buying and selling. If it has a recent MOT the buyer can be more confident in what they're about to swing a leg over. Take away the MOT and now only bike mechanics and experienced DIY'rs will be in a position to know if the vehicle is safe or not.
