That being said, also some of my biggest heartbreaks when they passed also. We recently ( 5 months ago ) brought our new Boston baby home and named her "Bella" ( and that was before we found this channel! ) Crazy! But it.just seemed to suit her although she is a rascal as you can imagine at 7 mos old ( and my 9 year old female, "Moo" , doesnt always appreciate it. ). I recently gave her the nickname "Re-bella" lol. I hope you get another when you're ready. I bet you're a great fur baby mom. God bless you.

I love Boston Terriers I was looking for a English bulldog for sale and I found Rudy he was around 5 years old and blind in one eye. His previous owners had gotten a new lab and they decided it would OK to feed the 2 dogs out of the same bowl well after a few days Rudy started getting food aggressive to the new dog my guess was he wasn't getting any food because the big dog ate it all. Anyways they decided it was best to get rid of Rudy so I had seen him online and decided I wanted a puppy so I passed on it then a week later a friend of mine mentioned a Boston Terrier that was going to be put down because they couldn't find him a home that's when I told my friend to go get him because I was at work he brought him to me at work and I will tell you that was the beginning of the greatest friendship of my life almost 10 years 5 years he was completely blind and in his last year he lost his hearing I honestly have never felt love ❤️ Like the love he and shared and my heart was shattered when he passed away in my arms just a few months ago I have never felt loss like this and I am still grieving from it. I am on my second Boston now. Learned a lot from my first. I once believed the gas problem was just "the breed." But I learned from experience that you can eliminate a lot of the problem -- maybe as much as 95% of it -- by following two rules. #1 -- Treats are not easily tolerated. Yes, they love them. Yes, many are high quality. Yes you need something to motivate them in training. I tried everything. But even small bits of steamed sweet potato were problematic. Basically the rule is that going "off script" -- giving my dog anything outside of her meals, is raising the likelihood of gas. Commercial treats, even high quality ones, often contain sugars and other ingredients that can ferment in the gut, resulting in gas and probably a tummy ache. I found that using her actual food for training worked great, even though it was a mix of wet & dry food. It also serves to slow down the eating so they're not gulping air. Rule #2 is related to Rule #1. Measure your Boston's food! Guesstimating or feeling generous can easily result in too much food. THIS means that it doesn't get adequately processed in the gut. Loose stool and gas are the result. Lastly (not a rule but just an observation) a gassy dog may just need to be taken out for a poop more often. 2 1/2 to 4 hours after a meal my dog will definitely poop so I make sure she doesn't try to cut and run back inside esp. in the cold weather, and try to postpone the "big business" trip. I live in a small city apartment, and the gas thing HAD to be addressed. These tips WORK. And I should add, no dairy products for her, but most people know that.
Bostons are chow hounds and will eat opportunistically. One training focus has been "leave it" or "wait." My girl has to wait in a "down" with food in front of her until I signal her that it's ok to eat. She's 6 months at this point and we have a way to go yet, but she's making progress. After one $300 vet visit because she chewed a pod from a Honey Locust tree in the park, I have gotten strict about what she puts in her mouth.

She enjoys the challenge, but also doesn't scarf down her food so quickly, which I think results in greater air intake while eating, equalling gas. My beloved Ray-Ray, a Boston, passed in November at 15 and a half. I am STILL devastated and miss him dearly. I'm in South Alabama and we get like 5 plus months of 90+ degree heat annually. Early morning and after dark walks in summer are the longer, more fun walks. Middle of the day, he'd do his biz, then lead me right back inside! But for all walks I had what I called "The Ray pack"- a backpack with a full water bottle and collapsible bowl, a spray bottle I kept in the fridge to spritz him if he felt warm, and a cooling bandana.
Only had one real scare with the heat - we REALLY paid attention to time exposure to the sun and made sure he got his "fun walks" in at the cooler times of day.
I've always been an animal lover in general, but Ray changed my life in countless ways- in particular making me fall in love with Boston's. They truly are the best. ❤️❤️

Great description of all the reasons of why not to get a Boston. However, my wife and I have to disagree on the "not an outdoor" dog. Our little lady hiked 1/2 the Appalachian trail with us (1000 miles of backpacking for her). She was awesome and had a ball. Yes, we had to pay attention to the cold or heat, but she hiked 20-25 miles/day for 2.5 months with her own little backpack. We still go out backpacking with her at age 7 now and she is a trail hound. Thanks for your website!

I just lost my Boston a few months ago and I have to say he was the best dog I've ever had. He had soooo much personality and was super smart. He was really easy to train and seemed to enjoy learning tricks. By far the smartest and best dog I've ever had. I miss him dearly. When I get a new dog it will be another Boston. This video is dead on about the breed. Mine had some absolutely vicious farts. He loved to get under the covers at bedtime and when I would fall asleep he would let out a silent but violent fart lol. The type of fart that would stink so bad it would wake up from a dead sleep lol. He was always farting but it always made me laugh so I could fault him for it lol. He did love to snuggle and tended to be stuck to my hip where ever I went. If you are looking for a smart, fun, super loyal, cuddle buddy with loads of personality you won't be disappointed with a Boston. They are amazing little dogs

Already left a comment, but we bred my Boston Lizzie and gave her only puppy (she only had one puppy) to a friend since they love Lizzie and wanted a puppy, and we told her that since she lives in Texas she needs to make sure she doesn’t let the puppy overheat, keep a good eye on her, and all in all make sure she gives her attention, that was a little over a year ago and last week she called us saying that (Sierra) got locked in the shed while it was 90 degrees out and passed away. I was devastated and I haven’t talked to her since. Been pretty upset lately and wanted to warn people who live in hotter places to make sure that when they let their Boston out they make sure they come inside and that you know where they are.

I have owned seven Boston Terrors (sic) and not all have had smelly farts . I think it depends on what they are fed and whether or not they have any food sensitivities. Check your dog food and/or consult your vet about putting Bella on a restricted diet temporarily to see if the smell gets better. Also, several of my dogs really enjoyed leaping about in the snow. Bostons like people are not all alike.

Only thing is we have to warn anyone interested in getting one to watch out for the electric bills because we have to leave the air conditioning on for her all day even when we are all out in the summer. My boston is just slightly younger than Bella - I started cracking up when you mentioned the issue with flatulence. There are actually a couple of triggers for bad gas that we found.
    1. Grain allergies was a major culprit for us (although ours is quite allergic, he would turn pink wherever he's white as a puppy which is why we switched him to grain free). I can always tell he ate something he wasn't supposed to, because you can smell it. You do need to be careful with grain free diets as depending on the proportion of nutrients, it can cause other issues - that being said, the flatulence hasn't been that bad with a proper diet.
    2. Raise the food & water bowls - this will help them swallow less air while they eat. This is also recommended for larger dogs that are predisposed to getting bloat - great to reduce gas in brachy dogs.
    3. Eating something he's not supposed to outside (it happens)
    4. Anxiety. He gets nervous farts. Thunderstorms, car rides, tension in the house (because they're very sensitive to tone/moods), anything that would make them uncomfortable will bring on the gas.
They will still be gassy, but the above helps reduce it from eye-watering to something more tolerable.

I've only had Boston terriers. My grandfather bred them which hilariously lived in kansas. he let me choose a puppy. He was amazing and loved so much. He'd get so depressed when we would go on trips he wouldn't eat much. He was forever skinny and would not put on pounds which means his sister was literally twice his size and was downright hilarious when they'd play together. He loved chasing after mice and apparently snuck out all the time to visit neighbors behind our backs. Regrettably he became ill and had to be put down at 15 which was and still is devastating to me. I loved him so much and everyone else loved and thought he was the quirkiest dog. 😭♥️

She's got multiple genetic flaws including her spine being crooked in her lower back all the way down her crooked tail. I put her on glucosamine, chondroitin and MSM and it's working great with deep tissue massage to release the cramping plus ice after running. My plan is to try and get consistent with making and serving her bone broth. Then I'll take her off the supplement and see if she gets the same good results.
Maybe when they say "too much protein", maybe it's in relation to fat... Animal fats are missing from commercial pet food. There's so many flaky dogs and cats with itchy dry skin. My cat gets flaky in the winter as she has more trouble hunting. I try to get her to eat meat and fat and sometimes she's interested, sometimes not. Little punk..😂 she just wants nasty old canned cat food. There again so does the dog. 🙃 I used to have hey on raw frozen cat food and she looked great and loved it and then one day the quality must have fallen off because she just refused it, so we reluctantly put her on canned cat food. I heard once that the braciyocephalic breeds also have been bred to have ended up with some kind of dwarf type intestinal track and that’s why they toot a lot. My “kids” were on a venison diet and unless they were highly stressed, they wouldn’t. My boy was a calm, confident discerning, and friendly guy. When we brought him home the first time (the coldest day of the year in Chicago area), he was 10 weeks and farted all the way home. People were smiling at us as they passed and we had the windows down, so we could breathe🙊🥴. After that, almost never but he was a ‘cool dude’ and nothing rattled him. Always on task.
Then my old girl, was a puppy mill mom rescue. Great teacher for my 3rd puppy, but always a little edgey. Her farts could clear a room faster than anything. And her toots could wake me up out of a sound sleep.! I gotta say however I miss them both now that they are gone.🥺 well I think Bella is a beautiful girl. You are blest. Hi! I have a few tips for the people who have issues with their Bostons...
Snoring...keep them hydrated, rehydrate their dry food if necessary and offer veggies and broths. Praise them when they drink water. Help open their airway up by extending their head/neck until the snoring stops everytime and say 'stop snoring', lol. It will teach them to do it themselves when you ask.
    Farting / Smell...
Stop feeding all grains and use a large wide bowl with a high rim and flat sides so they can push around and pick up their food without swallowing air. Stop feeding anything that's causing them gas and digestive distress. Grains, dairy, too much fat or oil or even too many different foods at once can all cause problems. Add probiotics to their food, feed some 'cultured' foods or a little plain yogurt if they tolerate it to keep the gut biome balanced.
Allergies/inflamation... scent free chemical free products all around, keep them off pesticide-sprayed grass, pay close attention to diet so you can eliminate any food intolerances which can appear as inflamation, redness, dry flaky skin, etc. Keep some homeopathic histaminum hydrochloricum tablets on hand (or 1mg baby benadryl w no additives) for bug bites or histamine related emergencies.
    Joints / hips / mobility...
Bone broth (can use to rehydrate dry dog food) and take it easy on the high impact activities. Try walking or running on softer ground instead of concrete, which is known for being hard on your joints. Provide a step to get up/down from high places so they aren't stressing their joints by jumping up and down. If they're couch potatoes, make them 'warm up' to exercise by not going straight from couch to off-leash sprinting, lol. Keep the leash on a while and walk to get things flowing first to avoid injury like pulling a muscle.
Overheating during walks / play time and refuses to drink water... douse them until they're drenched and carry their stubborn behinds away from their doggy friends to go cool off. (Ok, J/K with that last one but I've had to resort to that on occasion!) 😉
****These are just some things that have worked for me and my 5 yr old Boston, may not work for everybody. If you have some tips, please share, I'd like to hear what's worked for you or if my tips helped you out. Have a good one! 😎

I'd add something i learned from french bulldogs, with short noses, a wide flat bowl with a flat rim is good, but elevating the food at an angle towards them is better. If you combine all of the above, your short nosed dog will be able to eat without over inhaling air so long as it's not a behavioral issue.

I’ve always thought Boston’s as such cute dogs, my friend is having 1 litter and then fixing her dog up after. She’s planning to give me a puppy and I’m so excited! I’m glad I found your channel because I’m used to only Maltese/Poodle/Terrier mix breeds

See if she will let you have two so they keep each other company. My little Liza Jane is an adorable Splash Boston but wants me to play with her constantly. I wish I'd gotten a buddy for her so they could play together. Not so sure she wants another dog in the house now.

You were spot on with all of your comments. I got a Boston 6 1/2 years ago. She was so polite as a puppy, and as she grew older she is just like you describe here. Even if I have 2 other dogs on my lap, she will find a spot to slide in where she's laying part of her body on mine. She's one smart dog, who can read my hand signals every time.

Usually, if the farts smell really bad, it has something to do with the food.

@@buckylovesplums_6731 agreed! I got mine on Royal Canin Ultamino - NO FART SMELLS, and VERY few farts if any. If he does fart because he drinks water too fast, they don't smell anymore.

Although I haven't managed to implement it yet, I found alot of Boston terrier fart moments can be addressed in the same way we have to address IBS issues but obviously ommit the types of foods that are toxic to dogs

I know a Boston Terrier that died saving a French guy from a killer. They both hated each other at first but then eventually got together. He then took the revenge from the one who killed it by stabbing him with rapier.

Truth. I lived in AZ and during the summer months we didn’t goto the park till 9pm at night. It was just to hot for her.
Then we moved to CO. She hated snow and cold. The sweater was a constant. Truthfully anything lower than 50 degrees she’d be chilly.
Life is better w a Boston no doubt!!!

I adore my Bostons and I am happy to say that they do not really fart at all.
We've raised them on a very well-balanced raw diet and that must be the reason.
People told me to be reading for the room-clearing gas but it just doesn't happen.
