MY GREAT GREAT X100 GRANDFATHER WAS AN EASTERN SPEARMAN. YOU BRINH HIM SHAME, CONSIDERING THAT HE DIED WHILE MARCHING ON HIS WAY TO SYRIA AND HE TRIPPED ON A ROCK.
Okay, seriously, there's a very good reason plebs/mobs aren't on here; it's WAY too obvious. It's a BUNCH OF IDIOTS WITH KNIVES. They are MADE TO SUCK. Celtic tribesmen are on here because their price is ridiculous, and Eastern Spears are on here because they have the appearance of a low-tier spear unit and barely perform better than the aforementioned mobs. TLDR; Yes, plebs/mobs are worse, but everybody already knows that, and the only time you'd ever use em' is when you get them in garrisons for FREE.
One time I have a siege battle against full 20 units. I got just big garrison force with two mobs. It was bad battle and I almost lose but in the end, when my last normal unit was fighting 3 depleted enemy units I charge my mobs in, and enemy just run away. I understand dat it’s very rare situation and enemy rout because of all the loses and everything else but without this 2 mobs of peasants my last unit will run away before enemy
***** Funny though frist time i've used them was as auxilia but now in a coop with a friend that is new to total war i've seened they doing quite well with him as Egypt and top five wosrt Units. Mob, Pleb, Peasants(is there any?), eastern mob and greek pleb :)
I love egyptian infantry spam in campaign. Sometimes just hiring an army of them to harass and occupy an enemy is the east while you are campaigning in the west is very useful. For online play though they suck.
The Eastern spearmen won and don't lie. The outnumbered moral penalty would break the praetorians before they even got into combat. I know because I've tried battles like those and it frustrates the hell out of me.
the pajamas warriors are god-tier meme status with their striped pajamas and hardened carpet for a shield; it makes you realize the Spartans did nothing special at Thermopilae
Roman poly bus is AMAZING for defensive battles in settlements and cities: Stick them in front of a gatehouse or at the end of a lane, and have melee units on the left and right. When the enemy comes charging down the aisle, the poly bus rips through them and the melee sandwiches them in place.
been a while since i played, but i think eastern spearman is also dirty cheap, bit better than mobs, very usefull to bulk up an army and tire their units, good to soak arrows, distract enemy while you bring your cavalry to bear, they have their uses.
Great list but the Egyptian infantry can be pretty useful to hold the line when in shield wall for me. Same gives for eastern spearmen. I use the in shield square formation.
Can't agree about Vigiles/Rorarii. They're not ment to be deployed in the field. Their purpose is to defend the settlements and they do it just fine. Place two units in a chokepoint anf order them to form square. Unless they face really elite troops they will hold the position for a long time, long enough to allow you move heavy infantry around the block and attack enemy from behind. Cheap, available everywhere and dependable. One of the best units
The Eastern spearmen has only one purpose and that is to shield or soak up the AIs attempt to charge against ranks of really good Parthian Archers. Along with great cavalry whose main purpose is to flank the enemy or hit the AI from the rear. This is the Classic hammer & anvil tactic.
Egyptian Infantry is so underrated. For a cheap unit you can use to quickly flank they are great. I have taken all of Africa with them and Egyptian pikes in the front.
Actualy the eastern spearmen are very useful infantry for a number of reasons. First of all they are cheap and that means you can easy make an army of yours filled with these troops witch makes for a good numerical supiriority and in open battles this is very good. Secondly when i use them along side my parthian horseman archers or parthian infantry archers for they are very splendin in forcing the enemy not to get close to these archers by either make the enemy focus on them or by standing in front of the archers killing any enemies by sorounding them and flanking them since there will be alote of them and on the meanwhile the archers will hit hard the enemy troops that are more far away. and even by themselves they might not be so tough as other enemy troops but thanks to them you can defeat an army much costier and maybe even better trained with the aid of both them and the aid of either infentry stronger units, specialized troops or cavalary support. overal instead of the worst unit they can actualy be a very VERY good unit because the true importans is not always on stats, but also in sheer, powerful unending numbers AND in how do you use these numbers. (i litteraly managed to win a battle with ONLY eastern spearmen FEWER than the enemy witch did not had many troops himself but had better one's and i think he also had a ranged unit too and still i was victorius.the importance to win is over all strategy. when sheer numbers are not enough you should use cunning by either heading to a forest and ambush the enemy or outflank them witch is what i did to that battle.)
eastern infantry were pajamas warriors in the original Rome Total War as well, also remarkable for how bad they made the Parthian army: an army MADE to rout; and they were wearing PINK pajamas
The weirdest thing is when a stack of eastern spearmen attack one of my unguarded settlements while my garrison is a legionary unit and some slingers and the the balance of power says "Win chance: none".
I remember using eastern spearmen. As mercenaries in Rome 1. To soak up ranged fire from the enemy, and tie down their cavalry. So my hastati, later legionnaries would suffer fewer casualties. As I couldn't recruit them that far out. Good times.
Eastern spearmen aren't even meant to be sent forward or used offensively. They should be used as screening force right infront of your archers. The archers and cavalry does the killing.
Some of these units is why I play divide et Impera for unit types and special area of recruitment units for different army comps. My personal favourite army build would be for DEI 1x Macedonian Companion Cav General/ Roman Legionaries general 3x Thessalanian Cav/ Cataphracts 3x Crossbow Infantry (from Syracuse) 4x Germanic Berserkers 3x Ballistas 2x Spartan Hoplites 4x Thracian Warriors
Playing as Egypt I always take 6 archers and the rest of the army egyptian infantry just for defensive garrisoned armies. Weird thing is that if I autoresolve they win almost every battle this way. When I play on the battlefield they get slaughtered. So they're not all that bad at holding the fort. Main reason I pick them for this reason is that they have a dirt cheap upkeep.
Agree with all these except the Illrian Cavalry (sorry for Spelling). These guys are extremely cost effective, on multilayer I will get up to 6 units of them combined with lots of cheap skirmishers and some elite spears, great combo.
Eastern spear men are good for sticking in front of heavy infy to cancel cav charge bonuses when you’re still researching tech for eastern hoplite/pike units
Eastern Spearmen... The bane of my existence during my early Parthia playthrough. The whole video all I was thinking was "There's no way these guys are worse than Parthia's units" Then I got to #1 lol.
Great epic battle song. What is it? Some DLC content I didn't download? Also Egyptian inf look good only because of the attention to detail during alpha previews. well... most "crap" units are like this. But still they can be very usefull if you know how to use your army. I wold only use them to scout the map if i have only 1/2 units of them but if i got 3/4 units i would use them against the skirmishers in a surprise attack. Every units have theyr weakness its just about how you use your troops wisely
lol eastern spearmen can actually be useful if you send them to support a cav fight that has already started (30 bonus vs large?). ofc they cant get charged or hit by anything on the way. or just send them to chase off enemy skirmishers/skirm cav.
The only use eastern spearmen have is at the start of the game you cant get any other units. Same as the tribesmen and levy freemen. Yeah they suck but you need something to fill your ranks.
I'd like to add a partial defense of the catapult based on my experience in Napoleon total war (I know great source). If you've got far enough in the game and your just rounding up places you haven't conquered you will have plenty of money so it could be worth it.
A pretty good list that is very accurate, but I have to strongly disagree with eastern spearmen. Sure they aren't very good in prolonged melee, I know from experience, but holy shit they are one of the most spectacular anti-cavalry units. In a period of maybe 3-4 seconds a unit of 40 of these guys brought a unit of light missile cavalry from 45 to 21 on the charge. Sure, they can't fight enemy infantry very well, they are vulnerable to missile units and have a poor statline, but when they charge cavalry they will absolutely annihilate them.
Honestly when I played the Parthians and used the eastern spearmen they where not really THAT bad. Sure their stats truly are not good at all but here is the thing: you are not meant to use them as a front line infantry. Your play style as the Parthians should be a focus on foot and horse archers due to the buffs they both get, thus after your arrows block out the sun and have either killed or injure most of their forces which are painfully trying to make their way towards your fresh eastern spearmen, THEN can you send them to kill what is left of the enemies tired troops. (How fresh a unit is in battle is important.) I'm sure that some think of it as "too much trouble for too little gain" but then again why play an eastern faction if you do not enjoy hit and run tactics and recreations of the battle of Hattin or Carhaee? I will admit however that i would wish this unit was more historically accurate, after all it was part of the reason the Persian empires even existed thanks to the Sparabara formation. At the very least it would be great to have them gain better defence against ranged units so that they can tank the missiles while your archers fire back, or even better have the front of the unit use their spears while the one's in the back fire their arrows, much like the real Persian tactics.
Celtic Tribesmen are the basic garrison unit for the Gauls, so in campaign at least they make at least some sense. Also, they have cavalry-counter tactics. Obviously in multiplayer battle they are completely pointless. Also, even an eastern spearman can defeat a mob.
Feel like some units should have exceptional morale bonuses depending on their leader, especially when they represent religious aspects.. I.e. Egyptian infantry, if you have the Pharaoh leading you, you aren't about to abandon him, he is your god.
i actually had a game the other game of campaign as Armenia which start out with eastern spears and was attacked by militia hoplites and won not even upgraded so there not terribly useless they can handle anything below and militia hoplites
I'm glad that Rorarii didn't make an appeare (I hope they didn't if so I'm drunk) they saved many roman cities only with their corage and square formation for sure bettr than greek garrison hoplites that are their replacements.
egyptian infantry is so op in multiplayer their cheap af and those javelins alone are worth their money sure they have a better option(axe warriors) but their also a meat shield and a time buyer
I could just about do a campaign on ROME 1 making use of Eastern Spearmen, they do NEED support though. Don't rely on them for anything. I think in ROME 1 they were Parthia's only infantry?
Why isn't Citizen Cavalry or Barbarian Light Cavalry on this list? They are actually worse than Illyrian Cavalry and CC cost 80 gold more. Illyrian Cavalry mops the floor with Light Cavalry.
Don't disrespect eastern spearmen, theyre great when you defend a small town with only the garrison: main line of pikes, the mobs behind them and one eastern slinger behind those. One eastern slinger and one eastern spearmen should protect another entrypoint but the ai usually focuses on the pikes since you placed them closest by. Bring the spears and slingers around and you have a big hit to enemy morsale. Thats it tho
Someone help my understand the point of some people's arguments. For instance, 'Rorarii and Vigiles, ugh'. Look, I could understand that if you're coming from a competitive online multiplayer standpoint, some units must seem awful, but Rorarii were essentially bulk levy, hardly much better than Leves, guys with javelins and a shield. Vigiles are town watch, not soldiers, so why should they be very competent at combat? They really shouldn't be. As town watch, really they're good at being a police force and fire-fighters more than anything else.
***** You, no. But the man quoted seemed to suggest they ought to be better. Personally I wouldn't know, I don't play Rome II, but it helps to know, historically, what the Rorarii and Vigiles were.
lol the eastern spearmen.
Their best use is for recreating Thermopylae with 40 of them versus 2 royal Spartans

Eastern spearmen are the best infantry if you go the autoresolve route
Pyjama Warriors lol :D Definitely deserve to be up there.
i like vigiles. in square formation they are great against cavalry
Aren't Eastern Spearmen even decent vs. Cav?
yeah, they have a bonus 20 to cavalry, which is why i don't think they deserve to be on the list. perhaps mob should be in their place.
AJC51597 The mob unit is even on the thumbnail...
That cav rider at the end tho XD
I was expecting the mob to be on this list
Ugggghhhhh ILLYRIAN CAVVVVALLRRRY These guys should have been higher up
Someone help my understand the point of some people's arguments.
Janas Aurora Did I ever mention that they should be good?
***** You, no. But the man quoted seemed to suggest they ought to be better. Personally I wouldn't know, I don't play Rome II, but it helps to know, historically, what the Rorarii and Vigiles were.
Wait, eastern spearmen are worse than plebs from imperator augustus! Wow...
plebs don't even have shields!
