- The solid time of change guitar solo by Steve Howe. Pretty close to the studio recording.
Gear used: Jim Reed PRS, Kemper profiling amp (Cranked Dual Showman + treble booster; reverb)
When Steve Howe came up with this picking/riff I don't think he was copying or influenced by anyone. This song is so original it's impossible to tell how it came to be.
By the way, That's a gorgeous PRS guitar!
Alan GF The works of brilliance and talent combined helped make this possible thanks to Steve Howe!
Its so supernatural. Its not on a human level. Howe seriously tapped into a heavenly realm.
Stefan Ohlund everyone assumes that Steve's classically trained, but actually he's never done any formal study, he just listened to some classical music and picked it up by ear. It's a testament to his natural talent that he sounds that good at it that people all think he must have been trained.
Howe was never classically trained. Please don't pretend to understand music theory in addition to spewing complete BS about one of the most unique guitarists ever.
This shows you how Insanely phenomenal, the guitar work of Steve Howe was. I knew a hardcore Jazz guitar teacher that only liked people like Joe Pass, and Al DiMeola. He thought rock players were boring & simple . . . but he loved Steve Howe. Great job with this.
That guitar intro is insane, like literally written by an insane person, Beautifully done, that's got to be on of the hardest covers period.
can confirm, even on drums its ridiculously difficult
It's completely manic. Love it so much
What goes through Steve Howes brain? He seems to hear stuff we mere mortals can't. He has incredible ability and a complete lack of fear with composition. Remarkable for an untrained player. One of the best players IMO. Great job by the way!
totally agree, that's why is my favourite guitarist. Totally unpredictable and melodic at the same time
Untrained? Pretty bold statement,do you think he started playing like that?
@@bruceweaver9514 As far as I am aware, he was self taught and does not read music. I could of coarse be wrong about that, but it’s my understanding.
@@fenixfp40 That's right: he always learned and played by ear. Autodidact.
@@bruceweaver9514 He is famously untrained, you just need a good ear and you can learn that way.
ansolutely love Steve Howe, but what a huge headache this must have been to learn. My head would explode after all my hair turned gray. Great job.
thank you, and it isn't really complicated piece compared to his other guitar works in Yes :D
@@alexfaggian7960 names please ;)

Sound Chaser to me always sounds ridiculous
Any musician that takes on Steve Howe and YES has pretty much earned total respect.
Thanks for keeping the YES genius alive.
How sad most people today have never heard this music. Its a crime!
You'll be happy to know there is definitely a community of younger folks, myself included, out there who absolutely love Yes, King Crimson and the like.
It is not forgotten yet!
@@jassie138 That's great, Jasper, I'm very happy to hear it. Keep it going brother.
Well done thanks Alex. I'm 60, and have seen Yes about 20 times. That was a pleasure to watch and listen to....
High praise!
thanks a lot!
Probably the most enigmatic and original (and also almost impossible to copy) guitar solo. Really like your cover!
One of the greatest guitar solos of all time done with justice!
Aw man, it cut off right before my favorite part! (well, until the modulation near the end) Seriously great man. That typical Steve Howe timing is very hard to do. To my ears you pretty much nailed it! Very, very nice!
My bad! I learned it until that bit. Thanks anyway!
+Alex Faggian Okay. I was really just kidding about being disappointed. That opening is really hard, especially that awkward timing. Very, very nice work!
Goddamn that must've been a pain in the ass to learn that intro. Very good job on what must surely be one of the toughest guitar lines in rock to learn.
Steve Howe: one of the few guitar players who at the Time could actually pull off such Mclaughlinesque playing
So often there was more music in SH than JM playing.
@@vonBottorff well yeah, that's the thing with jazz; it's always like they are trying to find something.
Impressive job Alex! I admire your dedication. Equally complex bass line running through this song.
Dude that was awesome! I can't imagine how much time it took to learn all of those parts and put them together my hat is off to you you're better guitarist then I'll ever be!
thank you very much Danni. I took a lot of time to detect individual notes, but the effort has been payed back :)
Great job, Howe is one of my biggest influences as a player, but I always thought this piece was too difficult for me to even bother trying to learn...and you just proved me right haha. You nailed it though.
And the things is, Howe has created way more difficult pieces! Thank you
You get pretty close (to the edge) of Howe's tone!! Well done.
Absolutely incredible that one man could imagine and execute this piece, and that anyone could re-create it... I'm in awe
He actually goes farther than the intro - he almost gets to Total Mass Retain. -- and does it very well.
W O W ! Never thought how difficult this guitar part is! Well done Alex! Only a genius can compose such an incredible guitar part...Howe is a genius....thanks for showing it!
I agree! Thank you very much
Very nice job! Steve Howe is my favorite.
Great job! It's really good to see young people digging on some great older music.
The Genius of Steve Howe
hard solo....I LOVE IT
Really well done. One of my favorite songs..
This is pretty darn close. That fact that he's slightly out of tune actually helps to recognize that it's him playing, and not just Steve. Very, very good !
Very good job, man! This is not an easy piece and you did great! Keep'em coming...
Spectacular work. Really. I learned that in high school in 1973 and I'm trying to pick it up again that's why I saw your version. I was looking for tab or people playing it. I'm sure when I learned it in HS, I was probably playing it only about 70% correct. I really want to learn it again. Properly.
Well done daddio......Well done......
This is fantastic . Learning by ear level: expert . I got as far as the first riff and decided to look it up...... And here you are!
+Chris Jenkins Thanks, this and Awaken are quite tricky to figure out
That was sick, bro.
Thanks Raul!
Incredible!!! Well done Sir!
Fantastic.... Best I've heard.....Been trying to learn this myself for years.....
thank you so much!
Awesome! Your first guitar sound is perfect and dead on balls. All you need is the Dan Electro sound.
SENSUAL! You've done a great service to this song.
An intercourse with guitar :D
Outstanding! Steve Howe wrote some incredible pieces of music and as a guitarist, he's a hard act to follow but I've not heard anything better than your rendition. Thanks for sharing it with us!
I agree. You're welcome!
I dig it....glad to see younger generations picking up on how amazing this music was and still is. Yes! And just noticed in the second part how you got the often-missed ghost pre-picking notes in there. You have big ears, my friend, as my jazz buddies used to say.
Congratulations, great job...blessings. Thanks so much for share. Steve Howe .. outstanding composer and guitar player. The Best
This is a very hard guitar riff to accomplish but I think you did an excellent job and you nailed it. Great job
Bloody hell Steve Howe is an absolute maniac, how many ideas/styles contained within 4 minutes of music… amazing
and I assume it was all improvised! Astonishing
Mr Mushrooms, he lives in the world on his Solo Albums.
Excellent Playing, that is a lot of work but worth it.
Congratulations! Fantastic job! Thanks for shared!
that was just brilliant, my friend!
thanks Fabio!
Awesome! been trying to learn various parts of the song, you should do a lesson video on playing this intro.
Excellent
Great job by that kid!!! OMG!!! Will definitely listen to Close to the Edge tonight.
Incredible performance…a real pleasure to listen and watch! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I love listening to the live versions from 1972-74. They are all so different and so outrageous in content. And btw who starts a song off with a 4 minute guitar solo??
Brilliant!! Great job, not many attempt this.
Absolutely great!
Really fantastic! Many congratulations!
Alex, I just hit the thumbs up button and it went from 1.3k to 1.4k. That was cool; almost as cool as your fantastic playing of an incredibly challenging piece of music by the incomparable Steve Howe. I get up, I get down😅.
thanks a lot Mike!
Rhythmically very difficult as the many challenges evident here. Saw Steve struggle similarly to perform this accurately in 2017 tour. Nobody else like him in the 70s though
That....is skill. Great job!
You are a great guitarist...Steve Houve is may favor guitar. And I was just a boy, wen I have this album...
Tanks to give you talent...👍🙌
my favourite player too! Thanks a lot
The shame is that no one is creating this kind of stuff anymore
Good job 👍
Wow. You nailed an incredibly difficult passage. Bravo!
Brilliant!
WOW! Well done! Thanks for the post. I'd love to see the chord progression at the end of the video broken down, I've always wanted to play it but have no clue.
English bass player here; been playing Yes music since 1968; this is actually very good
such a long time! keep going Paul :) thanks
wouahou good ! very fan of yes , i'm french and it's my group prefered , tank you so much !
Impressive!
Wow very talented! I've never played guitar but I wish I knew people as good as you!
Amazing!
Thanks for commenting on my cover, Good job man
Truly an epic prog rock classic
Nicely done, and the tone is spot on, amazing job
That's wonderful, Alex. Thanks for that.
This is just a kickass boss music
Wow, great job! I don't think I will ever want (read: try) to learn it, but you did an amazing job! If you had a 12-string and an electric sitar, it would be SPOT ON!
Thank you! Unfortunately I don't have the two instruments you mentioned
I thought so too, but that's what it takes (for me at least) to make it sound exactly like the studio recording!
Oh lord!
You did it perfectly!
thank you very much!
Dude you can PLAY !
Pretty close, good job.
One of the Howe's best and most complicated solos and one of my fav ones. Congrats on your rendition and your courage to even attempt it. Would be nice if you could re-publish a longer version of this clip and adjust the mix balance - lowering down your track a notch and slightly cranking up the album track. There are backing tracks available without lead guitar.
Not sure if you're still publishing, but this certainly earned a 'subscribe' from me.
Due to the mixing, I've never heard the guitar part during the verse so clearly---what a brilliant set of chords/riffs!
Un verdadero kpo me puso la piel de gallina bendiciones
Great work Alex!
+Maurizio70 Gilmour Fan grazie Maurizio!
Amazing transcription, brother! It doesn't get any more accurate than this.
Really great! Congratulations!
Legendary
Outstanding performance! Loved it.
Beautiful brother. Now do the next part.
VERY, VERY Good!! ...........
to me and many others..maybe the greatest song ever recorded..in any genrge
Great job Bro👍
WONDERFUL !!! GREAT !!!
Nice job!!!!
Great Job my friend and your tone is awesome!
thank you!
Dude...Duuuuuude.....well done!! I've been working on CTTE for a stretch, and now hearing you, I want to put my guitar in the fire....ok, not really, but truly awesome job.
thank you! don't give up :D
Thanks Alex. You made my day!
Amen
Solid!!!
Bravissimo, veramente stupendo
Ti ringrazio Sergio !
Fantastic cover Alex!
Saluti,
Bob
Hi Bob, thanks a lot
That must have taken some doing to work out. Well done! (As usual six idiots giving thumbs down. There is simply no reason for this. I think some people spend their days going around RUclips just giving thumbs downs out of simple perversity).
they'll be mainstream rockers who just like shredders and speed...too intelligent for some ears.
BRAVO!
Nice job ! Keepin' it alive !
+desrecording Thanks!
Excellent! You are an amazing talent. I always wanted to try and play that one. I only have a few parts of it. It must have been a huge project for you to figure out all those parts and the timing etc. Great job!
very kind words, thank you John!
That was clean as f bro
very cool
Good job!
Very, very cool!
