Amen brother! Always loved this song and loved the drums, especially all the off-beat and strange time signatures. Chris' mad bass and Steve's guitar are the best examples of their phenomenal playing! This song took up the entire side 1. What a journey!
Yeah and then left the band so he never had to play this live. And whenever he would get back in the band for a tour the two or three times he did he never played it like this. So, I put this down to what you can do in a studio when you only have to pound it out once as opposed to recording something and then playing it live on tour 2 - 3 times a week, like what Neil Peart and Carl Palmer did with some of their VERY hard drumming.
@@johndoh5182 ....No one in the band yes ever played Close to the edge like the studio version and by the time Bill came back to the band in the later years he was way ahead of what he played as a 22 year old kid...as the whole band really approached the songs in a different light as they matured. Wow. You got that final crescendo just right. It's a series of weird time signatures and Bruford just plows through it with that extended sforzando until it hits the climax. Yikes! You got it PERFECTLY, especially the accents following it with that oddly placed downbeat on the snare between the cymbal crashes. Well done, Niko. Very well done indeed. I must note, however, that Bruford did everything that you did with a very simple trap set. NOT criticizing: the man has a PhD in percussion.
