It’s funny you mention the calendar, we were there in November and I brought one home for my friend and he loved it! Also, we stayed right by that cat sanctuary.
I had one a few years back and someone said it's actually the same guys every year. But I was in a line for something there last year and there was an actual Hot Priest right in front of us.
Was that beaded guy behind you "video bombing" you or was he part of your entourage? You betta werk! Oh, was that an actual portion of pasta served or only what you had left after many "takes" to get it just right? I see the cheese around the bottom of the rim so you must get more than that over there, please tell me you do.
There's nothing that can replace the feeling of walking into Saint Peter's Basilica the first time. It's immense and breathtaking. I'm agnostic, so it's not just a Catholic thing. Come on, Michelangelo's Pieta in there! When in Rome, don't miss it!
Add the Sistine chapel to that! I didn't expect La Pietà to be that small though. Anyway, everywhere you look in Rome is magnificent. So full of history.
@@jrodayeoh I love Matteo, and his funny easy-going attitude, but I don't think he does his (and my) beloved Italy justice while being dismissive and flippant about its treasures, and advice about what to skip. This surprises me, to be honest. I hope anyone who views this as a 'must see in Rome guide' can also find a better source for visitor info. And by all means, Matteo, keep the comedy coming.
to be completly honest: for me it was underwhelming. the art and decor just dont make sense in the space. too much gold, too much clean marble, too much everything. this may sound super dumb, but the basilica is just overcrowded with ostentatious stuff it doesnt make any sense. what i can recommened is st maria maggiore (also in rome) or the cathedrals in ravenna.
Watch out Rick Steves we have a new tour guide in town! Between the hilarious and delightful commentary & the good eats traveling with you would be EPIC!
Matteo, are you my long lost relative? Lol. For real! Being Mexican and Italian (I’m not Irish though, but, my cousins, Trisha and Nick are. Plus, they’re part Italian too). Sailor Moon is my jam! When you mentioned Rick Steves, I thought of my Nonno. He loved watching him. In all honesty, when I’m having a bad day, your humor puts a smile on my face. Thank you for being an awesome entertainer! 💖
Everybody feeds the cats there!! All the surrounding neighbors. There's also a cat-sanctuary there, Torre Argentina. Anna Magnani also often fed and cuddled the cats there!
Literally every time I watch his stand up or any travel clips it gives me life lol if ur depressed or just feeling down n need something to cheer u up I highly recommend watching any of his clips he’s so entertaining 😂🙌
"La cucchiarella"!!! Matteo is spot on there! That wooden spoon is what my Italian husband (from Naples) would get in the kitchen and yell "cucchiarella!" when our kids won't stop trying to beat the living daylights out of each other. That word works like a charm I swear. 😂😂😂😂
I am Rick Steves and here you can see Matteo in his natural habitat 😂 Joke, but the trues is, it is really nice to listen to you and see italy at the same time. Thanks for taking us with you
I enjoyed my time in Rome. We were on a tour and walked right in to the Vatican and the Coliseum. You crack me up when you show your sarcasm and start talking Italian really fast. 🌈
Across the street from the gay bar is where the gladiators would practice, not where they held the lions. The lions and other animals were kept under the colosseum.
Matteo, I thought it was called the Wedding Cake, not the Typewriter. At least, that’s what I heard from the mouth of a well-known Yale art history professor. *Edit:* Okay, according to Wikipedia, the Victor Emmanuel II Monument is colloquially known as both “The Wedding Cake” and “The Typewriter.”
A few months back I was in Rome and went on top of that building (there's an elevator to the top). Now I can't stop thinking about myself as one of those wedding cake figurines.
I enjoyed your walk through the Campo de' Fiori - I loved that place. And my husband and I ate at Osteria da Fortunata, where the lady was making pasta at the counter!
Yeah and they also call it the typewriter because it looks like one. In general most Romans never really liked the Victor Emanuel Monument since the days it was built lol
When he made the Catholic Grandmother's living room quip, I immediately pictured a black velvet painting with Jesus over the sofa. SO Catholic Grandmother! Now, everyone should send a black velvet Jesus painting, to show support for his Catholic Trifecta of Guilt. 🤣🤣
TL;DR I made the best unintentional jab at the catholic religion at their main club house. Disclaimer *I did not do this on purpose* Back story: Went to Europe for the world out games (in Antwerp 2013) with a group of friends to support 2 in the group who were competing and decided to see a few countries while there coz Australia is ridiculously far away. So 3 of us were in Rome for a few days and stopped by the Vatican to say g’day. Middle of summer (north hemisphere has such a calmer sun, it’s cute). We knew there was a dress code to step in to holy spaces so got ready in the morning threw on some shorts (3 1/4 length) grabbed a top made sure it wasn’t a singlet, off we went. Walking around the main entrance bit (where they show off the mummified popes) looking at some art type stuff (da Vinci?) when one of my mates stops me with a hand to the shoulder which turns to her grabbing my t-shirt and questioning/exclaiming “DUDE! WHAT THE?!?!” Well, by the most awesome instance of coincidence, the top I grabbed has a full size pic on the front of a gruff looking (homeless maybe) guy holding a sign that says “I just want my childhood back” I looked down at my top then up at my mate as realisation set in. I laughed so hard I nearly wet myself. No one stopped me though unfortunately/thankfully I must go back one day. Think I still have the t-shirt too 😂
That cheese guy was impressive! And oh my god did I love your Rick Steves impression! I hope hope hope he sees it because it was spot on! You are awesome! I had a hard day and you made it so much better. I want take a vacation to Rome and go pet those cats.
Man, that catholic guilt really goes hard tho. I grew up in Oaxaca, Mexico and even tho I'm not a catholic by choice, I still mentally punish myself and question my motives over something as simple as not setting a Dr's appointment 🤦🏽♀️🤣
If you have a "Gambino!" The guards will let you bypass the line for the Vatican,... they did for us and it was amazing, they even let us walk in places nobody else was allowed.
Matteo you do know that's the Castel Sant'angelo... the dramatic potential is off the charts. Also, the Vatican square is where I've been hit on by probably the most gay priests, anywhere.
You would still be really sexy and sassy with a bald head imo, like with a closely shorn beard combo maybe...but I don't think Bob (OR Monet for that matter) needs the competish. 😂 Thanks for another installment of Living Vicariously Through Matteo Whilst he Gays It Up in Rome. 😉👌💗✨
Ah, man, why didn't you go inside the gay bar? Next video GAY BARS OF ITALY! Come on, I know there's more, Rome has at least 10. Hardly anything on RUclips. Show us what they are like inside.
It’s my dream to get married in Italy but my boyfriend said that we should just have our honeymoon their and get married in America I think that was a great compromise
"Giallina" (a bad literal translation would be "yellowish") not "gallina" (hen). Then he goes on and says: "This (milk) comes from cows too, but it's made on the Alps".
An Italian American sees (in Italy) a woman making pasta by hand in a restaurant, speaks to her (in Italian) but she doesn't understand because she is not Italian and doesn't speak the language. It's a complicated world (like my comment, I don't speak English sorry). 🍺
I love Rome, people just eating pasta, wine, coffee, smoking cigs, singing opera in the streets and most of the historical sights are close, construction never ends and the Vatican is its own country but it's like the met on steroids.
Matteo! The castle you were singing about is Castle St. Angelo, formerly the mausoleum of the emperor Hadrian, who was the most famous gay of the ancient world. When his lover died while they were cruising the Nile, he stopped and mourned for a year, founding a city at the site of his death which is still inhabited today. Roman Emperors we're deified upon death, so in a way, Hadrian is the Roman god of the gays!
Lifetime straight dude that’s been married twice and has three kids(one adopted two natural). Matteo is the first person I’ve seen that would make me question that at all.
Lol the poor immigrant woman making spaghetti by hand. You just got a lesson in labor matteo. WHy do it yourself when you can underpay a Romanian to do it.
Fun fact! In the phantom menace Theed palace was filmed at the Royal Palace of Caserta in Campania, Italy. Same place used in The Two Popes to show the interiors of the Vatican.
I want Matteo to travel the world, this is so entertaining! :)
Agree! 🤣
6:52 - glad you found an Olive Garden in Italy. Your friend Nick will be over the moon.
Good Rick Steves impersonation! 😂😂 Haha - it IS time for an update. GIVE MATEO A TRAVEL SHOW.
I was just in Rome, and papa benedictus died when we landed and they buried him on our last day there lol
Spooky 👻
Came more often then...
It’s funny you mention the calendar, we were there in November and I brought one home for my friend and he loved it! Also, we stayed right by that cat sanctuary.

I love Rome. I cry every time I have to leave.
Steve's.. poor Rick 😂😂😂😂
I have never heard “the giant typewriter” nickname for that monument ahahahahah we just call it “altare della patria”
I went to Rome a year ago and we had to be up at 6 am to go to every little tourist trap thing
First thumbs up/ like Lol. I enjoy following you. Thank you for sharing.
He's my dream lover
Don't you disparage The Phantom Menace 😳 it's better than all three of the latest series combined 😎
Can someone tell me the name of the sunglasses he is wearing?
That grandma's dancing was so wholesome. She better work.
She better work! So Matteo❤😂
I referred to it as the typewriter or the wedding cake. They were very offended and derided Americans.
She's retired, she ain't gotta work for nothin' no more 😉
100% here for Sailor Moon references. The entire Moon Kingdom design is a big ol love letter to Italian architecture

I’m an atheist but no need to believe in god to admire wonderful masterpieces❤
@@Veronica_Boer Amen to that! 😉😂😂
I died at Matteo finally realising Catholic Grandma’s Bedrooms being what they are 😂

pure italian blood... he pulls a perfect umarell pose when admiring the vatican 😌
Everybody feeds the cats there!! All the surrounding neighbors. There's also a cat-sanctuary there, Torre Argentina. Anna Magnani also often fed and cuddled the cats there!
Ok but he hit the perfect Rick Steve's smile right after making the most underrated punchline in Italy. 6:48
I’m trying to learn Italian right now so just hearing the conversations and having the translations helps a lot
"Gen Z, this is iPhone 13!"
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Yo, Rick Steves is BOSS. I would pay to see you two do travel videos together 🤣🤣🤣
@4:53 Irish children too! The “wooden spoon” was used as a threat growing up if you were really misbehaving 😂
Love all your stuff Matteo can’t wait to see some more stand-up comedy. Please come on tour in Australia 🇦🇺❤️🧡🧡💛💚 🙏🏻
@hafizzifah1737 Sportman Hotel, Spring Hill
We need a full Matteo as Rick Steves set.
Of course that roman guy suggested you to sell real italian parmigiano at New York. Love that
I almost chocked from your Rick Steves impersonation! Thanks for making me laugh and for giving me ideas for my trip!
'Theres no emergency, they're just dramatic' XDD
Literally every time I watch his stand up or any travel clips it gives me life lol if ur depressed or just feeling down n need something to cheer u up I highly recommend watching any of his clips he’s so entertaining 😂🙌
Italian, Mexican and Irish... no wonder Mateo is so hot.
"La cucchiarella"!!! Matteo is spot on there! That wooden spoon is what my Italian husband (from Naples) would get in the kitchen and yell "cucchiarella!" when our kids won't stop trying to beat the living daylights out of each other. That word works like a charm I swear. 😂😂😂😂
The weapon of choice for my Irish mom was also the wooden spoon lol
This man, brings so much joy to my day/life with everything I see him in.
I am Rick Steves and here you can see Matteo in his natural habitat 😂 Joke, but the trues is, it is really nice to listen to you and see italy at the same time. Thanks for taking us with you

The camera work is exquisite on this one! 💓 Reminds me of those new airbnb commercials? Hope that's a compliment lol love your vids Matteo
The wooden spoon is a weapon in the hands of an Irish Mammy as well. What is it with Catholic countries and wooden spoons as punishment?!
That Rick Steve's impersonation was spot on!
No, he didn't say the guy's name correctly.
You're literally morphing into Liza and I love it ❤
OMG!!
MATEO: "I'm Italian, Mexican, and Irish. I'm the trifecta of Catholicism "
ME:💀🤣💀😂💀🤪
Bro, I'm 💯% Mexican and I felt that!!
Matteo, I thought it was called the Wedding Cake, not the Typewriter. At least, that’s what I heard from the mouth of a well-known Yale art history professor.

I just call it Vittoriano, never heard Typewriter! Non si finisce mai d'imparare 🤣
A few months back I was in Rome and went on top of that building (there's an elevator to the top). Now I can't stop thinking about myself as one of those wedding cake figurines.
I'm voting for Matteo having his own reality show!! :D
La mia Città ❤ Tanto casino e tanta arte. Vederla con i tuoi occhi mi ha fatto sorridere! Grazie Matteo 🇮🇹
I’ve watched every Matteo Lane video on the internet. Here I am. Sigh.
Laughing because I am probably one of the few who understood Matt's references, Rick Steeves, typewriter...
I enjoyed your walk through the Campo de' Fiori - I loved that place. And my husband and I ate at Osteria da Fortunata, where the lady was making pasta at the counter!
The Catholic mentality stays with you for the rest of your life lol
When you're European you grow up learning to fear the wooden spoon, we could've fought the Irish civil war with them
I learned literally nothing about Rome while watching this video, but I had fun doing it 😆
At least you know the gay bar, is across from the Coliseum. now you know.
I seem to remember Romans calling the Victor Emmanuel Monument the "Wedding Cake". And the PBS tour guide is Rick Steves; and he's a drip.
Yeah and they also call it the typewriter because it looks like one. In general most Romans never really liked the Victor Emanuel Monument since the days it was built lol
That little dancing lady is likely feeding the cats.

I was there a couple months ago. My hotel room window is just out of frame above the right side at 2:42. (Fascinating, right?)
6:10, sailor moon
The cats live in the forum not the senate building. The forum was the Roman's Mall of America.
Ungh, Rick Steves...who knew there were THAT many churches...
I found my Sicilian mom's wooden spoon collection.....I shuddered at the memories 😵
oh I miss rome!!!
It was actually my Irish mom that wielded the wooden spoon as her instrument of torture.
Parmesan 36 euro x kg. Hahaha.
9 to 20 euro x kg depending on age. He was scamming you 😂
You know Rick Steves is a famous stoner. That's why he so mellow and eating hella delicious food.
Time to visit Australia Matteo! You have a gaggle of adoring fans here and you'd have ball down under (😜)!
Chris‘s throwback Thursday Moment so cute 😁
you tried like 5 different cheeses and didnt buy any from that guy ??.........
Are they waiting for the vatican or St. Peter's Basilica ? Because you are in St. Peter's Square.
He vacuums his cheese?...which reminds me its time I vacuumed my fridge.
Thank you for taking us along to Rome Matteo💃🏾💃🏾💃🏾💃🏾
Tell someone from Italy it's 61° and they would wonder if the world was ending.
