    I hope to very soon complete replacing the PVC drain pipes of a bathroom sink in my home. I have to remove the heavily corroded shut-off valves--because they are, also, in the way--to cut through the 1.5"-thick stub-out with a hacksaw. Removing the valves and making a clean cut through the PVC are the big challenges; installing the new parts will be a piece of cake.

    Good instructions. However application of primer and cement seems too much and a bit dripping messy. Others suggest remove the excess drip first and apply about 10 turns until the primer appears clean and uniform. Same for glue. Great video presentation, good clarity. TQ

    FANTASTIC Video! Straight forward and super informative. Thank you! One question? Looks like some primer residue may have been on the brush when reinserting into the cement. Was that inadvertent? If so, how can we avoid that? Can the brush be rinsed? Thanks in advance. And again great video. I really like your delivery style. I'm going to subscribe.

    • @Know-How-Now
      @Know-How-Now  5 лет назад

      Thanks for the compliment and for subscribing, Richard. Intuitively, dipping the brush with primer residue inside the glue container seems wrong. The primer/glue manufacturers instructions tell you do as shown in the video. Apparently it is not a problem. There would not be any time to clean brushes. The glue sets up quickly and you don't get a second chance.

    Thanks for this Video! I am repairing a broken water line in my home and these simple, easy to understand instructions were very helpful as I have never done this before. I am unsure how about how long to wait to "pressure test" the repair though. Am I correct in assuming that the full water pressure in a normal home (1" outer diameter PVC at the repair) will be 180 psi or less?

    • @Know-How-Now
      @Know-How-Now  6 лет назад +1

      Here's a link to Oatey clear medium glue chart.... just guessing which glue you might be using. If that's not the glue you are using, you can look it up on the manufacturer's website. www.oatey.com/ASSETS/DOCUMENTS/ITEMS/EN/howtosolventweld.pdf
      It's highly unlikely your water pressure is over 180. If it's over 80 lbs, code says you have to have a pressure regulator. I have a couple of videos about water pressure, you can find them by clicking on the channel name.
      I hope your repair goes smoothly, with the cold weather we've been having in the northeast, I'm sure a lot of people are having problems.

    Nice to learn that the primer should be wet when applying the cement. But this then contaminates the cement. Is this not a problem?

    • @Know-How-Now
      @Know-How-Now  6 лет назад +2

      Apparently it is not a problem to have some primer residue in the cement. I did a lot of research prior to publishing the video. Two manufacturers of cement & primer recommend the procedure as I show in the video.

  • @rogerlaurel2363
    @rogerlaurel2363 5 лет назад +7

    Too much primer at 5:15 & you did not apply either prime or glue to the front edge of the pipe. Very important steps!
    Do not permit primer to flow into the fitting or pipe if it can be helped. Sure, it can't be seen when the job is finished, but, it is not good. Daub off the excess primer on the can ring before contacting the either the pipe or the fitting.
    Glue applied to the front edge of the pipe will make a superior seal when the pipe is bottomed out in the fitting. It seals the fitting/pipe coupling preventing a water pressure point between the pipe & the fitting sides.

    Odd... The Oatey Primer is obviously purple but there is no 'purple' on the shown chart. Home Depot sells a lot of PVC from Charlotte Pipe but then sells Oatey products to join the pipe. Always check the pipe manufacture's markings on the pipe to identify material type and schedule and then select cleaners, primers and solvents for those specific pipes.

    • @ndiemer5261
      @ndiemer5261 2 года назад

      ASTM F 656 is a standard for primer. Not a brand. So the primer used, must meet this standard. Oatey Purple along with others do.
