- Canticle of the Turning is a song written by Rory Cooney based on the Magnificat (Song of Mary). The melody is the popular Irish tune "Star of the County Down" which first appeared as the song "Gilderoy" from Pills to Purge Melancholy by Thomas d'Urfey, published between 1698 and 1720.
This version is sung by Gary Daigle, Rory Cooney & Theresa Donohoo from the album "Safety Harbor".

This song made me believe in Christ again. It has a special place in my heart.
Amen!
I forgot about it. You're right :)
Thank God!!
Alleluia!
This song was potently prophetic when released in 1990 ... and with each passing year its elements have been transpiring. Let us continue imploring God's mercy upon humanity
if you only knew how magical just it's 1990 199 9+9=18... 1+8=9.. 19.. 1+9, 10. 1+0=1... one... if you really understood..... it's so magical it could Mandela like U2's one...
in fact better... little gem... waiting to burst. my favourite since i found and sang first time in 1990. i have if one can be in love with a song, been as close as one could come to this one.
@@sammyscavelli6039 Gratitude for your thoughtful, enthusiastic reply. Blessings on this Pentecost Sunday 2022🔥
This is the end of the age.
Ai and nanotech are the beast.
The women, actual normal women everywhere, are conquering the dragon as false DNA as we speak.
My twin and I are such women.
All of it is science.
See the Singularity and transhumanism and mk ultra mind control and nanotech.
Read Bright Light on Black Shadows by Rauni Kilde; she gave her life for this.
The next movement will be of pure men...
after the cowards and perverts and weaklings among them are purged.
Right now most all men are stalled/impotent and blind and lame and foolish.
For this, there is a divine reason.
It is the women's day today.
Everyone in power knows this.
Thank you.

... No? It's a reference to what happened with Christ. It's not remotely prophetic.

“Canticle of the Turning” is from the traditional Irish ballad “Star of the County Down.” I was surprised when I heard this version at a funeral because I had always known it as the story of a young man who falls for “Rosie McCann from the banks of the Bann.”
And I was familiar with this version before I knew the original! I realized as an adult that just about all of my favorite church songs were in fact traditional celtic tunes with different lyrics!
When I was about 4 years old and my mom sang in the choir I would stand in front of our congregation and just spin and dance to make my skirt flare out. This was my favorite song - the choir made a cassette of this song on repeat. It still hits me right in the heart.
I really REALLY like this song
Based.
Even if you aren’t religious it’s still a great song and if you are religious it’s that much better.
Yes, Troy. #Maranatha
I didn’t realize this was a song from 1990! It has an old time, Quaker sound to it. I feel many past lives when we sing this. Praise God Most High!
Thank you for your beautiful comment.
Likely because it's written to the tune of Star of the County Down, an Irish traditional.
Well, they certainly aren't Quakers!
Perfect song to give us hope and strength in these uncertain days.
Post it on fb. Share it. It's been my go to since a small child. That and on eagle's wings, gather us in and Rise up. Share it...
We sung this in mass yesterday. It was love at first sound. God is turning our minds, our hearts, this world around. 💖🙏💖
My 11 year old loves this song. It's the one she asks to listen to the most.
I was raised Lutheran, a member of Nondenominational church and I love the victory in this song, given to us freely by our Loving Lord Jesus! we pray for justice and peace every time we get together and now we will be singing this too. Bless all involved!
This is one of my favorite songs in general, I love it when we sing it in mass even though it is not often.
They played this in church last week. It was so beautiful that I had to listen again! It's even better with the words.
My Church sings it sometimes in Mass♥️. It’s my favorite song! I love it so much that I memorized the page number that it’s on in the hymnal! :3
It also seems to be the same tune as rolling down the old maui
We sing this in our choir. I love it and these are Mary’s words. It proves how wise and religious she is
This is Mary's hymn of praise to God when she visits her cousin, Elizabeth, in many church's, it is sung during the 1st Sunday of Advent, which is today.
Played the recorder part of this in a concert 10 years ago and a couple times since then, and now I'm doing a collab with some friends from all over the world of "Star of the County Down".
I'm so glad to have run across this song again. It speaks volumes about our systems. It aligns well with the Poor People's Campaign.
Amen
Come Lord Jesus!
I am an ELCA Lutheran from South Carolina. This is to all denominations: If Isaiah 61:1-4, 8-11 is your Scripture of the Day, this is a good hymn to compliment it.
It is even better for Luke 1:46-55, of which it is a verse by verse paraphrase.
You're thinking of the tune, KINGSFOLD. There is a hymn to this entitled "My Soul Proclaims Your Greatness, Lord."
No, I'm familiar with that as well, and am not confusing the two. Take a look at the passage in Luke while you listen to the Canticle of the Turning again, and you will see it. This is a looser paraphrase, but actually captures the subversive mood better. Although this song is popular with Lutherans, I do think the scriptural connection is much more obvious to Catholics (Rory Cooney is Catholic), because of the daily place the Magnificat has in the Liturgy of the Hours, and, frankly, in Marian piety, but I think you'll see it when you hold the text and the lyrics next to each other.
This is one liturgical translation (not paraphrase) of the Magnificat (it's not the current one, but it's the version I know by heart):
My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord. My spirit rejoices in God, my Savior,
Who has looked with favor on me, His lowly servant.
From this day all generations will call me blessed. The Almighty has done great things for me,
and holy is the name of the Lord, whose mercy is on those who fear God from generation to generation.
The arm of the Lord is strong, and has scattered the proud in their conceit.
God has cast down the mighty from their thrones, and lifted up the lowly.
God has filled the hungry with good things, and sent the rich away empty.
God has come to the help of Israel, the Chosen servant, remembering the promise of mercy,
the promise made to our forebears, to Abraham and his children forever.
Yes, a common song in our church. Like it when it is done with the drums, keyboard and guitars. This Irish hymn is awesome.
Great tune! Very Irish!
it's the "Star of County Down"
what an absolute banger
Cannot say how much I absolutely love this song. It just moves me.
Wow! This must be the most beautiful hymnal rendition of the Magnificat! It truly captures the revolutionary tone of the Song of Mary. Those who maliciously spread fear (including a number of church leaders) about the advocacy of the Great Reset by political, economic, and social world leaders in the light of the covid pandemic should go back to scriptures and know that this is in line with God's will (Leviticus 25, Luke 4:18-19 and here in the Magnificat Luke 1:46-55) and to listen to this Song of Mary in this hymn by Rory Cooney.
Thank you, Our Lady of Good Help, for everything.
Idc bro this song is so fire
beautiful .stirs the heart & soul with hope .
Thats true Mary
New favorite song!!
We just started singing this song in Church now I like it :D
Seems just right for the season. Thanks for the post.
We sang this in church yesterday (the third Sunday in Ordinary Time in 2018), and it reminded me of my late aunt who recorded herself singing The Star of the County Down. She was English, not Irish, as far as I know, but she had a lovely accent that came across as an Irish lilt when she sang that song.
i went to a catholic school and i hated it but when we went to mass this was my favorite song
Same.
Same lol
Anglican protestant here
I didn't hate going to my Catholic school. I didn't know the word badass then. Now I'm grown. This is badass
I have listened to this over and over……it gives me great joy! “My heart shall sing……”🌹
Just heard this in Mass for the first time. Awesome song. Thank you for posting this.
This is comforting to listen to when working in the field of responsible investment, which involves researching companies' ethics or more often lack of such!
I LOVED THIS SONG,! Very timely in our world situation today!
There was a time when most of the Great Falls faith communities gathered for Evening Prayer on Sunday evenings and we used this..it was AWESOME!
Today is my fist time hearing this and seeing the words of encouragement. For Jade, my love.
I like this a lot
i love you sm
please respond
My Pastor played this for one of our evening alternative services. He arranged it a little differently, but both are equally amazing! :)
This Cantical of Turning Hymn was sung in church and it brought tears to my eye as I thought of the people in Ukraine 🇺🇦
I felt the same, when I first heard. Like it was meant for this time of Ukraine
Loved this version. Clear singing and lyrics displayed!!
Love this song, I enjoy listening to it.
I just began my conversion last December when I wandered into a church. This song was sung every Sunday in Advent and I fell in love at once. In this song, I heard of a God who loves justice and "crushed the spear". I was hooked and I've been deeply connected to Church and God and Jesus ever since
My former church used to sing a slightly different version of this. A few phrases changed-- notably, "Christ's mercy must deliver us / from the conqueror's crushing grasp", and instead of 'Til the spear and rod can be crushed by God', 'can' was replaced with 'will'.
I love this song, but I'm more fond of the slightly slower version we used to play.
This song is so cool! :)
I wish we would sing this in my church; I'm not Catholic but like the meaning still completely applies...
~:~
Love this tune
Great Song and all the Best for Ireland
Nice rendition. Sang Canticle of the Turning at church today for the Immaculate Conception Patronal feast of the United States. Check out VanMorrison and Chieftons rendition of The Star of County Down! It's great!
WOW, SO FAITH-FILLED!
If there is a God they seek to reconcile us all for good. I may not be a Christian anymore, but I believe in the message of Christ. Because in the end I know we are born to be free and whole .
Never forget if you proclaim Christ you proclaim peace, justice and reconciliation.
I'm Lutheran. I absolutely love this song, it's absolutely my favorite church song (not necessarily religious song).
I am requesting permission to play this video as part of our online worship this Sunday, December 6, 2020 at FaithWestwood United Methodist Church, Omaha NE, USA.
lol u got no reply 👌😂
No Christian believer would refuse you my friend.
This video is 10 years old The performers do not have the authority to grant you permission even if they saw this post. And the company who released the recording as well as the author of the text and the arranger would have to grant permission. I am not a copyright lawyer and , thankfully, most churches have now been able to return to regular worship, I think it is important for churches and church musicians like myself to try to use music, recordings and video legally and ethically. (And i did notice the date you were wanting to use it, excellent choice!) If i had wanted to show this video on that sunday, i would have distributed the link prior to the service, encouraging the congregation to follow the link before or after watching the service. I hope you and your congregation have survived the pandemic and are once again able to gather for worship.
This is a Catholic song, not Methodist.
Awesome
Awesome
Awesome
Reckoning and mercy
Soon

Perfect Advent song!
Great song for Advent. Splashing it during Lent can be dramatic too.
My friends played it as their recessional song at their wedding.
I did this for choir. My director changed it up a bit but I looove this song
a banger
Thanking God
Just sang this today and I wanna do my own version
🔥🔥🔥
God Bless A Beautiful Song. Our Great Pope Francis how great atime in the Catholic Church. Blessed John Paul 2 Pray For Us.
We actually sing these in our Church during immaculate conception and gaudate sunday
Same I’m in choir so I have to learn it 😂
My choir is singing this, this Sunday
"Justice, Justice shall you pursue" - Deuteronomy 16:20
We should sing this more in mass ngl
Is this the same medley of star of the county down?
Does anyone know where to find a copy of the whole album online
Today is the last day and the 100th comment. Fitting.
The changes for this melody are for "The Parting Glass"
Tune is “County Down”
The star of County down
This is in my church book.
In a strange way I feel this song could fit into The Handmaid’s Tale (spoilers)

I feel like this song fits in with the stirrings of rebellion in Gilead and I can picture June singing it after she got all the children out of Gilead.
Our Anglican Catholic Church also knows this song tune as "When. Jesus Left his Father's throne". James Montgomery-1816
I know the tune as "Star of the County Down" sung by Van Morrison and Paddy Malone of the Chieftains.
Can anyone point me to the recorder part?
I really, really, really love the song and i would love to go and teach it to my fellow choir members. I am a catholic, when is the song sung during the litergy? is it a thanks giving song? or, please let me know so that we can sing it correctly in the litergy. Thanks
We sang this in my Catholic church during High School masses, usually as the recessional or processional. Hope this helps!
@@coolkirk1701 Thank you Andrew, yeah, it helps. so that's an entrance song, well we have got to sing this song at all costs in our church. Thank you Andrew once again, may God bless you for your kindness.
How can I get a copy of the song lyrics?
Same here I hate how infrequent it is.
Sousabird - Who are you replying to?
It was in reply to TheLeadhound, who wrote "I love it when we sing it in mass even though it is not often."
(RUclips has been scrambling a lot of comment/reply sequences lately on any that are more than a few years old.)
The best version I have heard was done by the Goshen College Choir
A great song for interfaith gatherings. Taking note of the author details shared w/this video by the poster, relevant to the lyrics being based on the Magnificant/Hannah's Song (Luke 1:46-55 & ISamuel 2:1-10). Jesus is inherently referenced in the spirit or 'turning' of this song:)
I swear I'm the only person here
Am I the only one that this sounds a bit game of thrones or lord of the rings esque?
I haven't seen Game of Thrones, but the music in The Lord of the Rings was deliberately written to be very Celtic in feel, and this song and the song on which it is based, The Star of the County Down, are Celtic in origin.
huh same melody as the song star of the county down by grace griffith
That bpm is zooming
Does anyone know the Irish Pub song of this tune?
"The Star of the County Down"
‘Let the fire of the Jsstsss burn’ who’s from St Lukes? You know which St Luke’s after this. Dr. Skevington was not happy with us.
Skellington? Turtle man. He was a G tho. I’m obsessed with catholic music as a non-believer because of him.
Very countercultural. Mordern culture is terrible and this song goes against it! This is amazing!
This song is number 622 in the Catholic Gather Hymnal
Modern culture is riddled with the work of the unholy trinity.
Explain how modern culture objects to this song, more than any other culture. And the Unholy Trinity doesn't exist. Only the Holy Trinity exists. I understand there are problems with morality in this world today, just as there were yesterday, just different problems.
Purification is messy but directed to building Gods Kingdom

Needs Jesus.
If you know that it is a direct paraphrase of the hymn Jesus' mother sang in anticipation of His birth (listen to it with your Bible open to Luke 1:46-55), then you realize that it is all ABOUT Jesus. I think the lyricist presumed a high degree of scriptural literacy.
For those who know their bible, it is all about Jesus. Who else is the Saving Word, the Dawn, the Dayspring, and the Great Thing that was accomplished within the small and humble Mary?
