      Mr. Poitier was a great actor. But that line was written for brainwashing to keep us docile. This is 1950. When will our enemies practice what they preach?

    A heartfelt tip-of-the-cap to director and screenwriter Joseph L. Mankiewicz for his frank, hard-hitting take on the post-World War II color barrier and its impact on a big-city hospital. Actors Poitier and Widmark are particularly affecting in this fine film, and it’s a testament to the quality of the screenwriters and performers that this film still seems relevant.

    If Sidney Poitier is in it you can count on a class production. I remember seeing this film in the past. I appreciated seeing it again. Having been a child in the 1950s I remember being confused and disgusted by racism. Poitier always rose above such realistic disrespect.

    Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis earlier works. I believe there was a declaimer before the film began with Richard Widmark saying by all means he's playing a racist character, and this wasn't his belief. Both Portier and Widmark became lifelong friends after the movie were said and done..

      I Like That.. It's Always Worth Mentioning.. I was born around such people as Widmark intended to separate himself from.. They require far too much of my peaceful spirit.. My surrogate Mama was a light skinned Black Angel and I bloodied my knuckles more than once when an idiot spoke out of turn.. but Mama told me it wasn't our fight.. "They got to carry that with them when they stand before the Lord".. She Loved me & my my brother when she didn't have to and we love her always.. All Love & Peace

    During the filming of this, Widmark apologized to Poitier for having to frequently be required to use racial slurs in the film, and hated doing it. Poitier was very touched by the thoughtful consideration, also noting Richard continued to stay openly courteous and freindly throughout the film, assisting Sid in feeling welcome on set. They remained lifelong friends, since.

Sidenote: there has been some talk on the internet that she may have been passing. If so, that is why she doesn't seem condescending or strained when onscreen with the black actors.🤔

    • @blacktreemedia
      @blacktreemedia  4 месяца назад +1

      Was it there breakthrough also? There are enough mentions of the actors you speak of, their name isn’t cut out of the credits. I promote these movies to my audience, it is not racism to do so. It is so funny all of the non black people claiming racism these days while at the same time America fights to remove evidence of real racism from our literature and history.

      @@blacktreemedia Thank you for getting back to me...il faux savoir...That I'm coming from a perspective of someone born in France , grew up in lowa and then went back " home" in the nineties at 37 years old...that was 25 years ago. All that to say my outlook is rather odd maybe....My remark was justified to me by the fact that Mr Poitier was the actor carring the message and had the camera on him for the most part of the movie...l thought of the fact that the 2 people mentioned before him , as the credits unfolded, maybe HAD been more exposed than him at the time of making this movie...as it was well before " my time" I'm guessing at that. So I'm rambling...sorry...l'll finish by saying...from what l can gather, America has grown up somewhat with her problem of racism, Obama being a case in point...BUT...l believe after all the huffing and puffing coming out of this maga era...they come from a deep disdain for the black community...in all evidence, for a black man to have been elected president just blew a circuit among them....Anyway, all countries have their fare share of insitionalized racism, France not being the least with her Arab minority...Above all...thanks for the excellent movie you my offered freely..l was you well in your endeavours and once again, thank you for taking the time to send me a few words.

    • @blacktreemedia
      @blacktreemedia  4 месяца назад +1

      @woodwage7988. Awe I see what you were originally saying which I somewhat misunderstood. Yes it still would stand that they would present their more popular actors first as Richard Widmark and Sidney shared co-lead but this was Sidney’s first role while Widmark had been in a few films already and had made a name for himself. Same with Linda Darnell. So maybe not to odd to put his name 3rd on the billing. Although on the official poster his name isn’t even in big letters as co-lead, which does speak to your original thoughts. America and racism is an exhausting subject that we must discuss over coffee next time I am in France as opposed to here. But again this was Sidney’s second film but first credited role. I am not sure if he even had a speaking part in the prior film
