Custom Heat-Set Threaded Insert Tools (For my Hakko!)

- This has been at the top of my list of things to make for when I get a lathe. Well I have one now, so I had to make it! I've been using the pointed soldering tip for too long. Sometimes it would get stuck in the threaded inserts and pull them back out. This will make life much easier.

This is where I'm at in my life. Excited for a new apron.
That's all happiness is - a series of small enjoyments in our lives! 👍🤷♂️ Great quick project btw, made me wish I owned a lathe. 😁
oh boy... another guy who can make both.. electronics and machining. these people are the future.. keep up the good work... subscribing right now..
Really cool, I love using heat-set inserts too! Please be careful around the lathe. I highly recommend not wearing gloves, rings, watches when running a lathe.
I feel okay in these nitrile gloves since they will easily tear, however fabric gloves are a no-no.
I love this! High quality in your projects and in your videos, keep it up!
Hell yeah! Good stuff.
Making tools and improving them is the best part. Also, more lathe please.
I am gonna try to make an M3 size one out of an old soldering tip in my drill press with a file. I don't have a lathe so I'm hoping this will work. Incidentally, you were the reason I got into 3d printing (kind of) I found your video about 3d printing a shop vac duct for the dewalt table saw , took your file to my local library, and printed it. I now have 2 3d printers , one is an Anet a8 (well, most of the parts from the original a8 ) lol. Thanks!
I just recently discovered that heat-set inserts were a thing and have really been digging them. It's pretty sweet that you made your own tips. I picked mine from Amazon, but they were fairly expensive!
Great video Sean! I like watching the smaller projects better myself. Glad to hear your shop is getting more organized.
Thanks! Glad you enjoy the smaller projects too.
Excited to see more of your videos!!!
Keep going Sean. I look to you for inspiration. Great ressource
Been planning to do that forever, you beat me to it!
Hakko soldering irons are so awesome, I have two: an FX-888D for leaded rework, and an FX-951 for lead-free work. And yes, there’s nothing like a good shop apron to help keep shavings out of the house.
Nice! I use a cheap wood burning engraver I found, looks like a cheap soldering iron but lower temps. Couldn't bare to get pla over my nice soldering iron. Great vid!
nice project & video. installing those inserts is so satisfying. ^_^
Yess! MOAR VIDEOS PLZ 🤗
I love how the can of WD-40 just moves around on the vibrations. Also, I do it with a simple long bolt and a lighter, it gets kinda hot on the fingers sometimes, but I have a spare soldering iron, maybe I should make something similar. Great idea.
I laughed at the WD-40 when I was editing this.
@@SeanHodgins It's quite fitting with the music ;) Like the needle of a meter.
nice
[00:49] You can mod it to auto-adjust temperature with custom temperature control circuit. It could be an interesting project for a future video, especially if you will show different approaches to how it could be done.
That is a cool idea, not sure how I would do that but I’ll look into it.
Good job, what temperature do you recommend for inserting one of these inserts into pla?
I find around 230C to be quick enough and not liquefy the plastic.
Could I buy one from you for doing M2 inserts?
What temperature do you recommend to use with your soldering iron for PLA? I’m thinking about getting that same exact soldering iron. Thank you so much!
I normally do 450F if I’m not in a rush as that will give the best results. It’s a great iron!
@@SeanHodgins Wonderful thank you for the response!
232°c is just a little hotter than printing temperature. Thank you for that tip.
hack coat with a sharpie then mark
how the hell do you get the insert tip to stay on the weller or get it inside the tube thing, i put it over the normal tip like a sleeve and it just falls off when upside down. i opened it up from the 3 screws, how do i get it inside without breaking it?
On the Hakko the sleeve tapers in at the ends so it physically clamps down on the tip when you tighten the sleeve down.
@@SeanHodgins yeah i need to get that iron, thats a very nice feature, i have the cheap led weller and was getting very annoyed. ty for replying, how is the thermal regulation on the f-888D? i notice it has an up button but no down for temps.
3:09 - @blondihacks says ; Rigidity is king on smaller shop tools.
3:45 I see people using a marker to make a dark zone, then use the caliper like u did to mark the point/range
ClickSpring has a gorgeous purple dye.
@@massimookissed1023 Yeah, Dye is on order, still figuring out things to buy.
Do you have videos for a young 7th grader starting out with zero knowledge and tools.
