Another guy you're helping save about $4600 here. Surprised that sanding down the burnt tube like that actually works. I think bimmercoding my DRL's to 100% brightness and leaving them like that during the summer is what killed mine.
Update about a year and a half later: Had to do this same thing to my other headlight. Same exact problem but happened during the winter to the opposite headlight. Did this process again and once again looks good as new. Three hours with a friend and one $100 part and both headlights now are good as new. Over $9000 saved.
Right?! I thought the same but it turned out amazing. Still working perfect a year later✅️

Autorised Service Stations here have the same policy to overcharge you, and to say, well you have to exchange a whole headlamp because a new module is not na issue. Thanks a lot one more time. I did this today to my f10 after watching your video. It worked exactly as you showed. Didnt have to replace the led module though but cleaned it with contact cleaner and drilled the tube as you showed. Light became back to normal. All the mechanics i checked with told me that the only option is to change the headlight. Little did they know. Many thanks !

Just scratch the top you don't need to drill honestly
Probably just enough to get the burn marks off the tube. Soon as you see clear instead of black, I’d stop.
This is exactly what I needed to know for my F20. :) I'll investigate further if there's any lube that we can use after finishing, to prevent the contacts to get burned... Thanks!! EDIT: It seems that Dielectric Grease is the best choice for this...

I did this on my Audi about 4 years ago. It's pretty much the exact same process. Except I didn't have to take off the bumper. I had to remove 7 or 8 screws up top and that was about it. Currently shopping for a G30 550i and came across this video. Good stuff bro!!!

The LED pixels are in the module and what's in the headlight is only the tube ! Awesome job posting this !!!

Stopping in to say THANK YOU SO MUCH ! I have the G12 and had the same issue where the tubes were burnt, i drilled and cleaned them up and installed the new ones and im good to go !!!

It's interesting that by shaving the plastic tube with the dremel you made it matt, instead of nice and shiny (matt reflects light instead of letting it pass through). Even with this on camera doesn't appear that one angel eye is dimmer than the other one. Nice work so far.

Thank a million for this video. I have the same problem on a 2018 G30 540i m with only 27k miles that I just bought last week. When I contacted the dealer (Advantage BMW Midtown Houston)about it. They told me they weren't gonna do anything about it. This was an issue with the car that I didn't catch before the purchase. Shame on me I guess

I had to replace both of them on my G30 2018 costed around 6000$ each! But, thank god it was still under warranty so didn’t have to pay anything.

Your video was a lot more informative than all the others I watched. I own a 2021 X3 M40i and seems like the same path of repair. I hate how we have to go through all the trouble of removal just to get to the spot we need but that’s BMW I guess. So it was just the module and optic portion? No bulbs to replace in addition to? Seems straightforward. Appreciate you sharing!
This is a great video... I have a F20 and had one of the headlights replaced... now, there's a slight difference in color - new vs old - so besides a new Led Module I'll probably also need to sand the connectors? Maybe I'll try to sand the connectors first to see if I can restore full DLR brightness... thks.

I got this repair done on my M550i. The light was working with a bit of discoloration. Now a few days later the DRL is back to being off and I’m out a couple hundred bucks for nothing. 🙃
Hey i was wondering how they are holding up today? Had the same issue on both sides on the inner DRLs. I replaced both modules and they were sanded down as well. However, i see on other posts and 1 or 2 people in these comments that say it went bad again. Just trying to get an idea of how long this will last me. So far they have been good but its only been a month since the replacement on one side and about a week on the other. Im pretty sure they are going to go bad again .. hope not but if they do im trying to find a decent aftermarket option for the entire assembly
Wow. Simply amazing! Thanks for sharing. Since replacing the module did not work, couldnt we just drill and clean the surface without replacing the led module ? (Basically, use the same led module after cleaning the burnt marks on the tube)
No because the original module is the one that burned and left a burn mark so it's already burned out you must put a new module in after taking away the yellow marks on the tube

I have a question to the one who posted this. First the fix, you created, was genius. It's amazing to think that German engineers wouldn't advise this to their mechanics as a method of fixing the DTRL Ribbon with a simple new module purchase which is significantly cheaper then the entire new light.
But here is my question on the matter of the new module purchase and installation. It requires coding from BMW. Our lights are super complicated and do all sorts of things. What did you do after the installation to A) eliminate the notification/warning issues and B) How did you program the module specifically?

Does this work for non ICON headlights? My regular drl on my ‘18 g30 went bad. On the left side outer and on the right side inner halo went bad. Is 1 singular module on each side responsible for both of the halos?

Hi Hello... I am driving a F30 320i LCI and recently had this led ring turned yellow...I am residing in Malaysia.
Got few feedbacks on this and need yr expertise on what's actually the problem.
As some say it's the module and some says the whole light needs to be opened from the front cover and replace the rings.. which will be very costly and may not get a good fit as there's glus or seal which may have problem later days... Any idea on how it's done and what is the part problem
Hello, I have a similar problem. Drive a facelifted F36 with adaptive LED headlights. The outer rings are slightly yellow. The module was replaced but the error has not been resolved. I looked at the fiber optics in the headlights but couldn't see any burns. What can it be or how could I fix the error. the old module is currently installed again. when removed, the leds are very bright and white.
@fullboltongarage , hey there. I have been trying to reach you. I was able to replace the module but somehow. The angel eyes on the replaced headlight is less brighter compared to the right side passenger. Do you know if anything can be done to have them same brightness

My 2018 M550i xdrive is having a similar issue except the LED isnt faded now its completely off. Will this resolve the issue?
I have an f80 m3 LCI and have this problem. The led module is right on top of the headlight when you pop the hood. Would changing the module fix my problem too?

Your welcome my friend! So with the drill it's basically just removing the burn marks left over by the old module. The tube is plastic so using the drummel you just scratch the burn mark off!

4.600,00 $, are you sure?? Timing chain service on 530d costed me about 2.700,00 $ and they changed quite a few things not just the chain set.
Yes! Myself and many others have recieved the same quote. A new headlight is 2400..not including modules. Just turn signal alone is 600+. All of this not including labor. So yeah 4600 unless you do my method!

Hey brother! Unfortunately I do t have footage of the actual drilling. I'll have to wait for someone with this problem so I can fix and film the drilling.
Keep in mind your not drilling..just touch the top of the tube with the drummel to remove the yellow burn marks!
@@FullBoltOnGarage ok, you are mentioning almost centimeter deep into the tube which I call drilling;) will use the dremel precise tool to remove the burnt rests. Is the tube homogenous or is there any central part / tube to be careful of damage?

@@user-qt1tr5ej2m Hi, once opened the led module, (it was not necessary to remove the bumper since my are the last led lights and the module are on the top side), I discovered that the issue is related to the optic fibre that should be connected to the two engel eye but in somehow is brocken and interrupted. In this way there is not the same amount of light passing through.... I'll make a picture asap and try to repair with a piece of Plexiglas

No the headlight is not burned only the module. This is what they tell everyone. The module is only $75..

This shit should be illegal. All bulbs should be user replaceable, halogen, xenon and LED. This bullshit with removing half of your car and and dismantling your headlamp just to replace a serviceable part is an absolute joke.

6 hours and three people. It took that long. Now I have yellow DRL's and trigger BMW drivers lol.
UPDATE: A month later, same tube darkened. I forgot to do the Dremel fix. I wonder if this happens because one of the light tubes are ever so slightly out of spec causing contact with the LED's and making them overheat.

Once you drill the first time you don't need to anymore. If it goes out again then it's 100% the module as it's what burnt!

Update, this was covered under my BMW CPO warranty. They replaced the whole headlight and angel eye module.

Although I don't have a BMW, but have the same issue on another brand of car. I contacted the factory (after I bounced off many official repair shops and the local importer) and they also refused to get it fixed or replaced saying that a 6000k DRL turning to 2700-4000K in color temperature is completely acceptable by their policy and does not classify as a fault, because it is road legal. So frustrating.

I have a question: mine is nowhere as bad as is yours, but my driver side headlight is a different shade than the passenger (the DRL element), the driver side is more whiteish and and the passenger side is more blueish (about 2 hues difference betweeen the 2 headlights) - do you think I should change the module as this shows the white one is soon to be on its way out?

How lucky to to find this. Mine just burned out, driver side outer. 2017 540, bought it 18 mo ago.
Yeah it's a time bomb. Eventually both will fry up. Fortunately it's not crazy difficult. Pretty simple honostly. Let me know if I can help in any way my friend!

I just did this repair on my 2018. Mad props to you sir for giving me the confidence. I sourced my replacement LED modules from a seller named "workerdream", $50 BOTH sides included!! Time will tell to see if they hold up!
$4600 ? Imagine them charging the price that exceeds the replacement of engines and transmissions for most other cars. Thank God I can do most bolt-on replacements myself.
