  • How Canada's Cap on International Students will Impact Indians | Vantage with Palki Sharma
Canada announced a two-year cap on the intake of foreign students after explosive growth in recent years aggravated the country's housing shortage. The new proposal will cut the intake by nearly a third. Indian students make up for 37% of the total foreign students in Canada. How will it impact them? Palki Sharma tells you.

I think this is one of the best decisions Canada has made in a long time. Canada is not the land of milk and honey. Many international students might be disappointed but they're being saved the stress of finding affordable accommodation which no longer exists.

These kids have no future in India maybe the suffering they will suffer for rest of their life in india is nothing comparing to suffering in the beginning in canada. It’s very easy to lecture others when you are well settled in the same country you are talking about where everything is wrong for newcomers.

@@harpreetshahi8054 The weather does bother many as when they leave Canada one of the reasons they state is the sh***y Canadian weather.
If these kids do not have a future in India is it then the responsibility of Canadians to accept massive inflows of Indians, year after year?
Many come here as international students to 'study' in the least tuition fee and the least diploma duration colleges not to study per se but to use this back door entry to work and seek permanent residency. Is it normal that in some 'colleges' near 100% of the students are from India?
It's great that the Liberals finally by listening to Canadians is putting a stop to these back door schemes. Finish your studies but not followed by a work visa.
I have suggested to Mr. Miller, in writing, to legislate an equal number per country per year for international students like the US does for their 'green card' allotments. This concept ought to be applied to allotment of permanent residency and Canadian citizenship too.

Students coming to Canada must know that good jobs are extremely difficult to find in Canada. Most of the new immigrants work in coffee shops, grocery stores, restaurants, etc. These jobs pay low wages. Before moving to Canada students convert their Canadian salary into Rupees; that should not be done because expenses are in dollars too. Please do your research before spending your parent's hard-earned money. Good luck.

Minimum wage in Canada is approx 16.50$ CAD per hour, much more than in US (which doesn’t have minimum wage and average around 7- 10$ CAD)for these service jobs. Because of your mass complain about wages, tuition fees ,rents and scams and our own complain /problems that lead to the evaluation of foreign students policies. And once the government (Canada or US)decide to audit ,it is never a good thing.

@@annle9671 The hourly minimum wage in New York for 2024 in the NYC/Long Island/Westchester area is between $16 to $16:50, depending on the county. California has similar wages. Students should look at the quality of their jobs after their studies. I know of people in Canada who continued working in coffee and donut shops, gas stations, and supermarkets 3 to 4 years after their undergraduate studies.
Students should look for US Universities that offer a Coop Program. North Eastern University offers Coop program. Under the Coop program foreign students are allowed to work in companies in their field of study and most of the time, those internships turn into full-time jobs.

There is a HUGE mistake in this video: in the introduction it is stated, among other things, that "Canada has a low cost of living" this is far from accurate, Canada right now is unaffordable for most newcomers. Also, education is not as affordable as described, at least not for international students: fees are at least triple of what permanent residents and citizens pay. As a Canadian that works with a lot of foreign students from India, let me tell you, nobody is complaining about the students. They're almost all great kids and hard working. But sooo many of them are here studying MBA's, which are useless in our economy, and they're very easy to take advantage of because anyone can pretend to teach business out of a strip mall. I don't know why we don't encourage people to come study trades, engineering, electricians, carpenters, etc. We desperately need those people and they make great money here. Don't fall for the dream of an MBA. Start your own plumbing business and make a ton of money that way. I wish I had done that myself instead of studying business.

As a Canadian I think this is really too little too late. In my opinion students are not the problem, especially if they are given an opportunity to join the workforce which is good for the economy. I think the bigger issue is we need an immigration policy that focuses on economic immigration, which brings in people who have the skills we are short in (Doctors, Nurses, etc), acknowledges their credentials, and gets them into those positions asap. I've met taxi cab drivers who were Doctors in their home countries but their qualifications aren't recognised here, and 'Canadian Experience' as mandatory for jobs. It also doesn't help that almost all newcomers want to move to our biggest 2-3 cities. Top down reform needed.

Student numbers are 100% a problem regardless, International migration accounts for 96% of our population growth and international students, along with the family they bring in and eventually attaining PR, account for over 50% of our immigration numbers.
10 years ago our total study permits were increasing only by 20-30k a year. Now we've reached 210k+. That's not the number of students, that's just the CHANGE in the number of study permits (older ones expire, those people become PR, and are replaced by a new and larger wave of students)
It's not just the category of people we're bringing in, it's 100% also the number of people. We're screwed, and it's too late to do any short term damage control.
Meanwhile, our housing start levels are at 1972 levels, and yet the population has nearly doubled since then and the rate of study permits since 10 yrs ago has went up by 1000%.
96% out of 1M+ population growth was all international migration. only 45K natural born here. No party is gonna touch immigration knowing its taxpayer base is quite literally going extinct and they need to replenish it with Indians.

Canada is not shot on doctors and nurses. Just like international students issue highlighted very late this issue is very similar but the media is not covering it since it will effect the big banks.
Canadian hospitals take self sponsored trainees from oil rich countries. Doctors need three to six years hospital training called residency to get a license to work as a doctor.
But most of the seats go to international trainee's who mostly comes from countries like saudia.
And after training they returned to their own countries due to better pay.
This way hospitals gets huge funding but Canada gets doctors shortages and the common man suffers.
The jr doctors loose time, hope and motivation.
They either switched countries or their careers in Canada.
This is another issue which needs to be addressed by the government but sadly no one is addressing it.

They made it so that I could not be employable in Canada. So I moved to the U.S. in 2005 and then some years later I moved permanently to the Philippines. I am happy that so many years later videos like yours are saying essentially the same things that I did. I was ahead of my time. I will never go back to Canada. Not to live, not to visit, not even a connecting flight. Too cold, too expensive, taxes are astronomical, no culture, no freedom, no jobs, no opportunities, only modern slavery, worst healthcare system, unbearable political correctness, crime infested/drug infested, xenophobic people, too depressing. It has become a North Korea style dictatorship in the western world.
Their are many reasons why Canada has fallen apart. But the number one reason is ‘multiculturalism’. My friends, multiculturalism simply does not work. Different cultures do not come together and mix, different cultures come together and clash. The world is divided into different countries for a reason: because people hate each other and only want to be with their own kind. The number two reason for Canada’s demise is ‘socialism’. In this modern era of aging populations, it is mathematically impossible for socialism to continue. The government does not have the money to take care of old people and provide healthcare, pensions and the various other benefits, even with the astronomical taxation that burdens hard working Canucks. Well Canada, you had a good run. Time for Canucks to move to an emerging country. We welcome you here in Southeast Asia.

The food bank is now being misused by many international students in Canada & it has already raised concerns by tax paying citizens. It has come to a situation where the homeless & desperate low income citizens can not get anything from food banks. There could be new restrictions coming up now. Citizens are now complaining that their children are unable to get part-time jobs since international students take up most of the jobs with competitive wages. This is another upcoming issue. Earlier truck drivers were paid really well, but today the hourly wages are very low since international students are available to work for very less wages. This has now affected the compensation package for truck drivers. Healthcare such as nursing professionals are being paid six figure annual salary with lots of benefits.

I am surprised that there are 370K Indian international students! It is expensive to come here, where the heck are they getting the money for that! And for Canada's population and small living space, there just isn't enough space for that, let alone 1 million International students each year! That is wild! I remember people were complaining (and still are) about refugees, but this International student stuff is far worse considering they could easily obtain the citizenship just for staying here! Meanwhile here I am completely broke...
I think another massive reason, is that Canada has been losing face as we are often mocked for our widely open immigration approach of replacing our populations. Nowadays, even from SE countries like Korea and such, they really dislike Canadians for not having an actual immigration policy in place, making our passports less than favourable...

They would have to club this measure with increase in housing to bring prices down. Increasing cost of living is a pain that almost all country would face and with increasing population it would become harder for the country to handle it. There would be economic repurcussions but positives do outweigh the negative. All said and done, Canada's PM has to do what is right for canada and not the world. Also students being driven out of Canada being an issue, they have not stopped complete intakes, they would still get the best students that are applying. It is just like IIT's only the best get in. Now only the best would get in Canada, so there should be no issue for them also. For Indian students it just got tougher, but for Canada, everything would work out well

We just can't afford anymore people coming to Canada, not while Canadian's are living in the streets and in tents during the winter. Not while we are experiencing a shortage of affordable housing, lack of jobs and lack doctors among everything else. This is not about racism or hate, it's about practicality. I think Trudeau is still trying to win a seat on one the UN Council or something, and he is selling out hard working, tax paying Canadian's. International student's need to do their homework about the country or province that they want to go to study. So many Canadian universities are greedy and money hungry. The problem with Canada is most part of the country is unlivable due to harsh climatic conditions. getting so many people here where you only 2-3 provinces that can offer jobs is not sustainable. It wud have ran its course anyway. We did not even have to wait 1 day when we put up both our properties on rent .. there were so many people offering more than the market rent coz there is hardly many options..

Most of the country is remote forest and tundra, so yes, most of the country is technically unliveable. But all major cities and towns are perfectly comfortable to live in. We simply have four distinct seasons here with a few months of cold winter, and it's not even all that cold sometimes. Vancouver rarely drops below freezing. I don't know why people are so dramatic about it.. buy a coat and a hat.

As a Canadian, all I can say is don’t come here. There is no work, which is why the number of foreign student applications have fallen significantly. The cap is meaningless and more a political stunt to make it look like they’re doing something about our housing crisis.
The education is over priced propaganda and the standard of living here is collapsing, due to decades of neoliberal policies that has destroyed our economy.
You’re better off staying in India, which is a country on the rise, unlike here in the formerly advanced, industrialized west.
