  • Australia Tightens Student Visa Requirements. Should Indians Worry? | Vantage with Palki Sharma
Australia has announced that it would raise the amount of savings international students require to obtain a visa and cautioned colleges about fraudulent recruitment practices amid record immigration. This decision will likely impact foreign students with many Indian students bearing the brunt of this latest move. Reports say colleges are now refusing to accept Indian students. Indians make up for the second-largest group of foreign students in the country so this recent visa crackdown has raised questions. Will it affect relations between New Delhi and Canberra? Palki Sharma tells you.

The average house price in Australia is now 10 times the average salary, this is because of mass immigration (ie international students coming to Australia and flooding the housing market, driving down wages and driving up real estate prices). This ponzi scheme has been hurting Australians (particularly young Australians) and even under the new rules it's still extremely generous to international students (mainly Chinese and Indians).

Australia is a country of only 28 million people and cannot continue to take 500000 people a year. This has caused a severe housing crisis leading to aussie homelessness and rising rents and house prices. 4 of the 10 most expensive cities in the world to buy a home are in Australia. While education is a large income earner for the country, the government is under pressure to deliver more housing. There is no racial conspiracy targeting Indians, for they are over represented in the intake of new citizens and students.

Do SIP in Mutual Funds in India instead of spending this money on Foreign education. The returns on such an investment will fetch far better returns in 5-10 years than spending on non sense education in Australia 🇦🇺 and save time wasted. Rather stay home and develop skills. Fools run amok to foreign shores thinking some magic wand 🪄 will twist their life around.

It’s a typical opportunistic relationship. Australia opened its doors to international students to bridge skill gaps within its economy. Several Indian students saw this as an opportunity to get permanent residency. Education is Australia has always been about securing permanent residency status for most international students. This does very little to the actual skill bridging but puts a lot of pressure on other aspects of the economy. Universities and their agents have also used the practice of luring students into Australia on the basis of PR pathways as opposed to career opportunities and future growth like what we typically see in the USA. This attempt by the govt is just to show the people of Australia that they are doing something. But in reality it will have no impact in the medium to long run.

I'm not a student. I'm a working parent and I care for my child. I have gone through the exact scenario (although I'm talented, but was refused the seats citing the "reservation" issue). So I don't want the same to happen to my child and thus decided to move to other countries where they treat everyone equally and priority given only based on merit.
My previous message merely reflected the mindset and thoughts of students who are thinking about their next generation.
Students want to leave India and settle in other countries not just for their own enjoyment. In fact many people (student/working class) are leaving India and settling down in other country are going through all the tougher situation just to safeguard their next generation.
India is not going to give up the reservation and vote politics. So it's better to leave the place and save your own dependents.

A lot of dodgy colleges are running in Australia with collaboration with those immigration agents. They exploit all possible loopholes in government policies to bring young students from subcontinent on this hope that all their problems will be resolved just by reaching Australia.
Unfortunately, this is not case anymore in Australia due to high inflation, fewer jobs and extreme housing crises.
These students generally take loans to arrive here and don’t want to leave immediately. This is the worst phase where they are exploited to work on low wages, and longer hours. Depression, anxiety, stress go up and up while they have no support from anyone.
It’s neither Australian government or Indian govt fault. I don’t believe this visa policy change will impact bilateral relationships.

Not only Australia, but every Western country should limit access to opportunities for international students and work permit holders from countries with a massive influx. This is a wise decision. Just because India has the highest population doesn't mean that Western countries should allow all of them to enter and potentially dilute their cultural values. I believe Canada should take note of this. While Canada has capped the number of international students, they haven't limited the number of LMIA (Labour Market Impact Assessment) holders from India and the Philippines. It's time for them to open their eyes.
